A Re-Dub Of DragonBall: Who Would You Choose?

Post by KaiserNeko » Thu Aug 06, 2009 5:45 pm

So, a couple other threads keep popping up discussing the FUNimation dub of the series. Ultimately, there are many sides to the issue with many different opinions on the actual quality of the dub, but that's not precisely what I want to tackle here.

Instead, I'd like to offer up a thread where people can discuss their ideal actors-of-choice for the characters. Basically, select a character, then select who you would believe is the best choice for said character!

As a reminder, this is of no insult to the current dub cast of the show. I've never personally been a fan of the English dub in any capacity, though I have enjoyed parts of it to a certain extent, but this is basically just a way to have fun with fan-casting and offer up personal choices without falling too far off topic.

To start things off, I'll go first. I've always been partial to selecting actors from specific groups, instead of mixing and matching.

I hope you don't think this a derailment of your thread (hopefully no more than my interjections did in the podcast, lol), but in a re-dub, I would be happy with Funimation's VAs, just with a more accurate script. Maybe a few changes here and there in voice roll, but Funimation has a fantastic list of voice actors, and all it needs is accuracy.

Dubbing right off the bat with the original music, more accurate lines, and emphasis on how the lines should be delivered, and a funi-dubbed DBZ would be perfect.

Well, not so much a derailment, but I'd have to ask (personally), do you really, honestly think Linda Young could provide a decent voice for Freeza?

Or are you saying that you think that FUNimation could re-cast and re-dub the show appropriately? Because that's definitely something I can agree with and definitely would promote in this thread. I'd love to hear Travis Willingham as Vegeta or possibly Piccolo, and Brina Palencia as young Gohan.

If we're going with BangZoom:

Cell - Troy Baker (Look through this guy's stuff, and put it with Cell, would be aaaaaaawesome.)
Krillin - Quinton Flynn
Kid Goku - Steve Blum
King of the Worlds - Brian Beacock
Taopaipai - Doug Erholtz
Karin or Turlte Sage - Kirk Thornton
Videl - Melissa Fahn
Piccolo - Vic Mignogna

Just some random assortment of characters that would be really good with those actors, IMO. May do more later.

Well, just to go in the discussion, I always thought Linda Young was a decent Frieza (except for 4th form Frieza in the show...good God). I never got why people thought she was miscast. I mean, just look at Frieza - he doesn't look like a man. I honestly thought he was a woman when I first saw a pic of him in a magazine until the article referred to him as "he" and "him."
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Well, to each their own. I don't want to get too involved in pitting personal opinions against each other.

Buht hes suppozed to sounf like Rusee Nakoo!!!11

I think the voice was decent(barely), but by no means was it great...Just because he looks a bit feminine doesn't mean the voice accompanying it has to be...

I'd prefer that the show stayed at FUNi, with an appropriately revised cast, but such is a bit of a spit in the face to previous actors.

But working off such an idea:

Saiyan Arc
Son Gokû/Gohan/Goten (child/adult): Kara Edwards
Kuririn (child/adult): Leah Clark
Piccolo: Chris Sabat (using his natural voice/Zoro voice)
Vegeta: Troy Baker (using that sexy November 11 voice of his)
Raditz: Travis Willingham
Nappa: Phil Parsons
Tenshinhan: John Burgmeir
Yamcha: Justin Cook
Chaozu: Brina Palencia
Bulma: Colleen Clinkenbeard
Chichi: Cynthia Cranz
Lord Enma:
Lord Kaiô/Narrator: Brice Armstrong

Planet Namek arc
Freeza: Todd Haberkorn
Zarbon: Eric Vale
Dodoria: Chris Forbis
Kyui: Brad Jackson (that Black Black Club member he played in YYH was a real douche, and as we all know Kyui is one too...)
Captain Ginyû: Brice Armstrong
Jheese:
Butta: Kent Williams (using his natural voice)
ReaCoom:
Ghurd: Chris Cason
Grand Elder: R. Bruce Elliot
Dende (child/adult): Laura Bailey
Moori: Bill Jenkins

Artificial Humans arc
King Cold:
Trunks: Eric Vale
#16:
#17: Chuck Huber
#18: Stephanie Young
#19:
#20: Kent Williams (as he already is)
Cell:

Bah, there's 400 actors at FUNi, this should be easier!!

Honestly, I love the dub voices. Save one. Freeza needs to be replaced simply by virtue of the fact that Freeza is a male, and therefore should be played by a male. I don't know what was up with FUNimation deciding to give him a female voice. Then again, I don't agree with Japan's decesion to keep Masako Nozawa for Adult Goku. She's the best Kid Goku, but I've just never bought Adult Goku with a female voice...if I had my way, I'd set my DVDs so that all of Goku's lines were from Sean Schemmel and all of Freeza's from Ryusei Nakao.

So, with that in mind...I nominate Chuck Huber for Freeza. His voice sounds simmilar--if not quite exact--to Nakao-sama's, and we know from his other roles that Huber can pull off "quiet evil psycho" roles very well.

When I first saw Freeza for the first time against Goku during second round, I thought he was Goku's wife. I thought, "Why the heck is he fighting against his wife?"

As far as keeping FUNimation people goes, I'm cool with the grand majority of the cast to be honest. But, I definitely think playing with some of the characters split up between the same stock five people, especially -now- considering FUNi's casting style, would be a wise choice. Sabat doing Vegeta with his natural voice I think would be really cool, for starters. I know Chris can act and him not having to focus on doing 30 characters and making them all sound completely different would probably help out the case of Vegeta for one. At the same time, I really like his Piccolo. It's hard to decide on that one...

I honestly don't think FUNimation will even dub Kai, and if they did I'd be amazed if they decided to go with a more loyal approach. However, I wouldn't put it beyond them. I find it amazing how much FUNimation has improved over the years as a dubbing company. I never thought they'd become the English-speaking world's most respected anime distribution and dubbing company, but they have.

PS: If that wasn't enough, 4Kids Entertainment is now streaming Japanese episodes of their properties on their YouTube channel--legally subtitled in English, for that matter. Isn't that a sign of the apocalypse?

Well, if Paikuhan and #16 can be played by the same guy using darn near the same voice, who knows Yamcha? I mean Chirs--no, Kirbopher.

Sorry.

Kyle was Paikuhan and Jeremy Inman was 16; they don't sound a THING alike in my mind...

Also that choice wasn't my own, someone else said I'd make a good Yamcha :B

While that's true for the dub, in the Japanese version 16 & Paikuhan were voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa

Adult Goku with a voice that's 95% similar to Goten's? That has DO NOT WANT written all over it.
