The Only Voice Actor To Make Nappa Memorable Is...

Post by DOOODGE » Thu Aug 06, 2009 2:44 pm

Well, let's face it, you know who it is before I say it. Takahata101.

I thought that neither of Nappa's English voices, nor his Japanese voice, nor any of the foreign voices I've heard make him a particularly memorable character. I'm not alone, either. He's been dead in the anime for a long time and no one really cared, then he dies in DBZ Abridged and you see tribute videos EVERYWHERE on YouTube. I think that's hillarious in and of itself, and a true indicator of the genius of everyone on Team FourStar--they took one of the minor characters and made him legendary.

Not a question, just stating my thoughts. Feel free to chime in.

I can honestly say that I will never view Nappa in the same way ever again. Hell there are a lot of parts in the Saiyan Arc I will never look at the same again.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

It's not so much the voice as it is the dialogue me thinks.

Eh, voice too. It fits the personality they wrote for him perfectly.

Yeah but without the personality in place that comes from the dialogue the voice wouldn't be so special.

Well, it's not really a fair comparison. The only party to have as much creative control as TeamFourStar is Toriyama himself. If any other group had taken as many liberties as TFS they would have been burned at the stake.

I like his Japanese voice the best though...

Takahata's performance is a near dead-on impression Phil Parsons, Nappa's FUNi VA.

It's the dialogue.

Its a very good voice and does what it was meant to do: Be funny.

But, it is nowhere near dead-on. Its completely (and intentionally) over-exaggerated.

Okay, yeah, not dead-on. I guess it's better to say, "you can obviously tell who he's mimicking."

Yeah, I can't even watch the Nappa battle without thinking of Abridged
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

"Bitch please..." Takahata's Nappa is legendary, for now. When Shonen Jump published the chapter with Nappa dying i would say it was a (quite) big deal for the series aswell. But now the story has ended and so much more has happened, its not that big of a deal. If TFS works through the entire series, we'll most likely forget about Nappa and be laughing our asses off at another character. As for the next big thing, my bets that Popo's going to take the main comedy role. "HIIIIIIIIIIIII"...

To answer previous questions, Takahata101 himself described his voice for Nappa (in a fairly recent Daizenshuu EX podcast) as "a bad impression of Ocean's Nappa."I was shocked when I heard that, though, because I thought it was an excellent impression of Phil Parsons (aka FUNi Nappa). I honestly think if it had been a notch or two deeper, it would have been dead-on.

I do think you're right, though, vershiris. Much like I can't watch the Saiyan arc the same way anymore, I found myself watching the Namek, Ginyu, and Freeza sagas wondering what TFS is going to do with them. I'm particularly excited for both Freeza and the Ginyu Force.

I like both VAs English and Japanese for Nappa. To me he's a fucking monster for the era he was in.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

As much as I love TFS Nappa and his voice, the original Japanese seiyuu will always be ingrained in my mind since I always loved his character introduction in Idainaru Dragon Ball Densetsu (Legends). It just sounds so devilish and malicious.

I have to agree, I never really thought much of Nappa until watching Abridged. My favorite part of that series was Vegeta and Nappa's interactions:

"Vegeta! Vegeta!"
"Yes Nappa?"
"I can fly."
"Yes...yes you can, Nappa."
