What voices do you hear...

While reading the manga?!


For me, while reading the Japanese manga, I hear only the Japanese voices.

But while reading Viz' edition, I hear a mixture between the Japanese and FUNimation & Ocean cast from time to time.

Like hearing Goku as Peter Kalamese ((Did I spell it right?)) in a time and Masako Nozawa in another time. This is goes also for other characters like Piccolo, Trunks, Mr. Stan and Cell

You can say the voices I like and not having problem with them...


But for characters like Freeza, Recoome and 19 who had infamous bad dub voices, I try my hardest to hear them in the Japanese voices.

Mostly Ocean dub. Or Freeza in Engrish.

The original Japanese voices mostly. In a few characters I do hear the dub voices though.

I cannot look at Son without hearing Nozawa.
However... it's getting to the point now where I cant look at Kuririn without thinking of Luffy XD
And Piccolo is Ace... Raditz is Buggy...
But those are the voices I hear, however I only have the Kanzenban for the Manga, I don't have any of the Viz Volumes except DB v17 (DBZ v1 according to Viz) so... I don't really know what I'd hear if I read the English version...

Mostly the Japanese voices, at least for the main characters. But I "hear" them in English. It's kinda weird.

Sometimes I hear the FUNimation dub voices, and other times I hear random voices in my head for them...

As cool as it would be to hear Nozawa-san's voice as I'm reading the english manga, It's very hard for me to visualize (er.. auditize? Is that a word?) how the japanese voice actors would sound speaking english. So to answer the question, I usually just hear my own voice except for things like Kamehameha.

When reading the VIZ manga, I imagine a kind of mixed bag of voices. For example, I can imagine Krillin and Vegeta speaking perfect English with their Japanese voices. Gohan has an original voice that's similar-in-spirit to the Japanese voice. Goku sounds like Peter Kelamis or MasakoX but his shouts while he fights sound like Nozawa (similar to how Bruce Lee has a normal voice but high-pitched shouts when fighting). Young Goku sometimes sounds like FUNi dub young Goku and sometimes sounds like Peter Kelamis' young Goku from the Red Ribbon flashback in the UK Ocean dub.

A lot of small-fry characters who aren't around that much just have original voices that come to mind and aren't influenced by the anime. Most of the more major side characters either have their Ocean voices or something similar to Japanese voice speaking English.

When reading the Japanese version of the manga, everyone who's voices I remember sound like they do in the Japanese version of the anime. Anyone I don't remember gets an original voice.

I always make up voices in my head for every character except for Mr.satan,for all of the minor characters they all sound like William shatner for some reason.

Funimation dub voices and nothing but that because that was what I heard for the most part when I first started watching the show, anything else just sounds wrong. For example if Freeza does not sound like Linda Young, it is not Freeza.

I agree with you for the most part. I grew up with the FUNi dub, as well. But don't rule out Ryusei Nakao, so soon. I'm a straight guy and I think that he's got a sexy voice for Freeza. We all think that.

The FUNi dub voices, definitely. Hearing different voices for English text is like blasphemy within the contents of my mind.

When I read it in Spanish, I her the Spanish dub, when I read it in english...I hear the Spanish dub Sometimes when I read it I can hear the Japanese voices

For the most part, the English FUNimation voices. However, since its in my mind, they always deliver their perfectly, LOL.

Having said that, Freeza is the one exception. I hear a voice in my head that reminds me of a mix of Ryusei Nakao and Chuck Huber (probably because I think Chuck Huber would make a perfect English Freeza).

I hear the Japanese cast. I've gotten so used to Toei's dub now its like a automatic thing, when i think about characters i think about they're Japanese voice actors, and the same goes with the manga. Sometimes it scares me when i hear Masako Nozawa speak English...
