Well, we already knew that they were good friends. The flashback was to emphasize how good of friends they were. Goku and Kuririn didn't start off as friends and developed their friendship over the series. Chouji and Shikamaru had already developed their friendship before the series.DBW wrote:For example, the episode with Chouji's death was pretty lame if you ask me. We see all these flashbacks of Chouji and Shikamaru's past, and this very deep Goku/Kuririn type relationship that they had, but it's all just thrown at us in a matter of minutes. How are we supposed to care about this character and feel sad for his death, when everything we know about him is just thrown in our face at the last minute? It's as if Kishimoto-sensei wants to make another Dragonball, but doesn't want to take the time to fully develop the characters...

I find it funny how a lot of Naruto fans bash DB, because I've encountered an equal amount of anime fans that bash Naruto. Their favourite thing to call Naruto fans is "Narutards" as a matter of fact.
I gave up on the anime fan community a long time ago. And I've had great piece of mind since.^^

The current breed
Well, the way people get can be very annoying sometimes. As many have said in this topic already, they want to be considered elites and only like fringe or unknown animes or mangas. I always figure if something is becoming mainstream, there must be a reason for that. I first saw some of the original Dragonball series back in 1994 or so I believe. I really loved the characters and the comical interactions. Then I did not see it again for a few years but always remembered that first saga they aired on television fondly.
I met a guy later at school who had access to fansubs and saw more of Dragonball and later Dragonball Z up until the Vegeta fight. I really loved it then. Especially Son Goku vs. Piccolo Daimao was my favorite battle. It has become my favorite animated show ever, and I do not really care what anyone else thinks. Some of my friends used to tease me about it, but I soon converted them by showing them uncut DVDs of the show. As one friend said after watching Trunks vs. Frieza, "Man, I am sorry I ever made fun of you, this is friggin awesme."
Senior year of college I met a friend of a friend who saw I had some anime DVDs in my dorm room and kept after me to join his anime club on campus. He asked what my favorite Anime was and I of course said "Dragonball". He kinda stared at me a moment and said, "well, I guess some people like it, but it is not really a "True" anime and is aimed more at children.
At this point I slid open a drawer and pointed at my complete collection of Evangelion DVDs (Which I watched once and have never rewatched since...) and said, "I suppose you would tell me that this here is the greatest anime ever and that you could explain the convoluted and just off the wall murderous ending to me?"
The guy grinned big and said, "Yes, Evangelion is a fantastic anime, you had me going there for a second with that Dragonball stupidness. We can talk about all the plot intracacies of Eva when you come to..."
About this time I slid open the closet and my two DVD racks full of Dragonball and Z DVDs. I said, "Well my man, Dragonball is greater than Eva in my book. It has it all, comedy, action, and a story that makes sense. Not to mention regular people as fans. I am pretty busy so I dunno if I will be able to make it to your elitist club or not on friday night."
He made an excuse that he had to go and my friend gave me a funny look and left with the other guy. So yeah, I've dealt with that type first hand. They start to slam Dragonball, and I start to slam thier nerd status because most of them are if they talk like that and have that mindset.
If you like it, enjoy it. Never let the opinions of others dictate what YOU like or collect. When you do things trying to please others, you will never gain any respect. I am 23 years old, and I don't care what others think.
My room has deer antlers on the wall from hunting trips, an American flag, several political signs and posters, and lots of Dragonball stuff. I am your jack of all interests kind of guy, and Dragonball is the anime I like most. People can take it or leave it, but I sure as heck won't change my tastes or bash it to be considered "cool" or "elite" by a group of geeks. I would give the same advice to anyone else here who deals with these types. If you have to change your interests, clothing style or anything to be accepted by someone or a group of someones, then they aren't the type of people you want as friends..

I can comprehend with this one 100%. The reason people are outside of the anime fan community is because of complicated series with recycled themes such as Evangelion. (I am not bashing Evangelion because I do in fact like it.) Not only that, but to someone who is not familiar with anime, a show like Evangelion looks just like Gundam. Only people who collect and read into the anime craze can enjoy series which look similar to another.Akira wrote:Not to mention regular people as fans.
That is why anime fans are viewed as geeks. Because that shit is wack man. No lie. Not the fandom, but the recycled themes. This is why DragonBall is so great. It has a unique plot and cannot really be categorized into an anime category.
Fans want to bash DragonBall because it is all fighting.
Fuck that. Evangelion involves large robot like figures fighting. Just like Gundam, Big O, Escaflowne, Outlaw Star, Dual!, and a lot more. Regardless of the plot, all a non-fan will see are large machines duking it out. Be honest, f*** the plot, the characters, the theme, the events, the climax, the antagonist, the protagonist, etc. because it will always come down to big machines trying to kill one another.
The deal with DragonBall Z is that it took the greatness from martial arts and twisted it into a completely impossible chain of events. It is possible to see a 500 foot robot, or for aliens to exist. But it is just dreamlike to see people flying and blowing up planets.
This is why non-fan's become fans because of DragonBallZ. DragonBall Z is different and honestly...
...FUNimation is the reason why DragonBallZ is so popular in America. You know damnwell no matter how much you may dislike the dub, when that shit comes on T.V. you are watching it. You can't help it. Nobody can. Because as great as it may sound, if DragonBallZ was dubbed the way many other series were dubbed, then it wouldn't be as unique.
When you hear Inuyasha say, "What the hell?!" people just go along with the flow. On the other hand if you heard Goku say "What the hell?!" then everybody (including us) will shit bricks.
I mean those large cinterblock-like bricks that the walls of schools are built with. Watching dub DBZ is an adventure. Never know what the hell you are going to get.
FUNimation's way of "hipping" up DBZ did work because it has attracted a big ass audience. It was big in Japan and bigger over here. Not only does DragonBallZ have a anime fans in America, but it also has your average Joe watching it too. Honestly DragonBallZ has set the tone for many anime fans to have become the fans that they are.
I was watching the Eagles play the Packers a few years back(football) and one of the commentators said:
"He hit that guy like a charged up super saiyan"
Holy crap, it has even become popular through professional sports.
So, unlike your other animes, DBZ has more than just your hardcore anime fans as fans. Ask ten people (Non-animefans) if they have ever heard of DragonBallZ. I guarantee that there are 8-10 out of 10 that have heard of it. Then do the same with the Evangelion. You seriously will get 0 95% of the time.

And once again, Dragonball serves as a gateway drug to a soon-to-be new anime fan...ChaotixXero wrote:I never heard of "Evangelion"

It's arguably one of the greatest anime of all time.
If you live in North America, just go to any major book store and look for the manga or graphic novels sections. If you live anywhere else in the world...just try the same thing.......I grew up watching the dub...and I can't read the manga(I wanna read from the Saiyan Saga, don't know where to buy it.)

Exactly.I always figure if something is becoming mainstream, there must be a reason for that.
Except for maybe Naoki Urasawa-san's work, all of my favorite Manga is mainstream (in the Japanese sense).
HunterxHunter.
Naruto.
One Piece.
Dragonball.
Bleach.
Rurouni Kenshin.

I think that Dragonball Z played a BIG role in Anime becoming so popular over here. Sure, Pokemon was here already, and some others too, but even Pokemon never hit the popularity levels of Z. I think that every other Anime they bring over is simply in search of the next "DBZ".

<Xyex> Original Freeza never sounded like a chick to me.
<Kaboom> Neither does Rita
<Xyex> Good point.

Well, Naoki Urusawa is pretty well known in Japan... But then again, everything depends on what you view as ''mainstream''.'lo Legends wrote:Exactly.

I don't. I mean I did back before I knew better and I certainly owe part of my fandom to it (also in part to Chrono Trigger TENTH ANNIVERSARY WOOHOO)....FUNimation is the reason why DragonBallZ is so popular in America. You know damnwell no matter how much you may dislike the dub, when that shit comes on T.V. you are watching it.
But um...if I know something is awful, I'm not prone to sitting and watching it. That would just be a waste of time.

To me, "Narutards" are a specific subset of the Naruto fandom that, well... post retarded things on message boards and claim that Naruto is far superior to everything else ever made, and that everything else sucks (even its influences, like DB). I guess not everyone uses it like that, but that's my stance, anyway.Jerseymilk wrote:I find it funny how a lot of Naruto fans bash DB, because I've encountered an equal amount of anime fans that bash Naruto. Could you... I dunno... type properly and not rip-off Deus with your avatar?
And a conversation that does not degenerate into Naruto vs DragonBall would be fantastic.
