This Doesn't Excuse The Dub, But...

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

If all you people are going to do is post stupid pictures and not even bother to attempt to understand what the difference between a voice acting studio and what the rest of the domestic anime companies are, there is really no reason to keep this thread open. It was absolutely wonderful at first, and oh look... gross ignorance brings it to a halt.

Yeah. Getting a little angry about that.

That always irked me about the dub. Them making up speeches, and then of course, dub fans eat it up. And I'm like... that isn't Dragon Ball. :(

Whatever, it was pretty good in Burst Limit. At least he says "Son Goku".

Looked at that video, and it's kinda weird to hear him say "Son Goku" Granted it would sound weird in the western order as well, but still...

Will admit I haven't paid as much attention to this thread, but on topic of another studio rather than Funimation, I give three words: Age of Apocalypse.

Tell me about it. Whenever I have friends round, we watch the dub (most friends anyway, I only have 1 which prefers the original), and I have to sit through, grinding my teeth together as Gohan monolouges about #16 "loving life" before he transforms.
Here's one, try the Bardock special! I mean, on planet Kanassa:
"My lord, it's the full moon! Like in the Vision!
Yes, the time has come!"
Even when they're fighting, this stupid dialogue is still going on, for example, when he scars the Oozaru.
"I tried my lord!"
It's like, jesus christ will you just shut the fuck up?

I'll gladly stick with my "fake Dragon Ball."
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

There's no need to use "quotations" to emphasize sarcasm. It's fake. The music was created so Fukunaga could line his pockets, not because they actually thought it was better for the show. The script is altered to the point where various characters are rewritten, themes are subverted or just erased, and key moments are sometimes slaughtered with bad acting, bad dialogue, or both.

It doesn't mean you can't enjoy it, or that you can't prefer it to the original. It just means it's fake. You choosing to disagree with basic logic with your "quotation marks" isn't going to "change" people's perceptions of it.

Extremely well put, there's nothing wrong with liking dubs that slightly alter the material. I like the Yugioh and Sailor Moon dubs even though I know they have changed a few things. To each there own, I'm not tricking myself into believing everyone is out to get my version of the show, I know damn well it's different then the original but I don't let that stop me from enjoying my favorite version of the show.

I prefer dubs, and I liked the Sailor Moon one, but that was just a bad, bad idea. They definitely would've been better off just keeping them as plain lesbians.

Y'know...for kids!

I'm sure the FCC would have totally let them do that.

I don't get how a kid seeing lesbians kissing is anymore wrong than a kid seeing straights kiss, unless you're worried he'll pop his first boner. Seriously, it's not like it's a full blown sex scene or nothin'.
But look at me, tempting a massive turn of subject, I'll just leave this thread now.

As a bisexual believe me I agree but the FCC wouldn't let that be or let me be me....erm...anyway...yeah.

Yeah there were some weird incestuous undertones due to that censor for sure. I can't think of a better edit though. They worked with what they had.

Know its a bit off topic(sorry) but my mind was blown when I started to read the Yu-Gi-Oh manga and like the guards were using guns and Tristan(I don't remember the Japanese name) had like a brother. Its not even the same thing anymore.

Anyway, to be honest I'm not to picky when it comes to Dragonball anymore. Like I have my preference and Sean's voice will be the voice I hear whenever I see goku but, I'd watch any version just to watch it. I started with the Ocean Dub but FUNi was the one that reeled me in so there is a lot of loyalty to them.

To be honest I couldn't care less if they throw in some extra lines(Cat loves food was always funny) because the original is still there to watch. At the end of the day all of FUNimation's little character flaws and silly monologues are just there for me to look back at my childhood. At a time when I didn't know there could be a SSj3, when I though Becket was a valid source and when I thought GT was gonna be the sickest thing on earth. That DUB no matter how good or bad just brings back A SHIT LOAD of nostalgia and I really like that. :D

The manga is vastly different from the anime dub or no. As for the guns once again 4kids didn't edit them out for shits and giggles it was mandatory to do so. Especially since they only made brief appearances it wasn't like they were a crucial part of the story. Hell VIZ couldn't even get away with showing guns in the DBZ manga after awhile.

I like the no gun thing in Yu-gi-oh, the show is crazy enough as it is, I'M TAKING OVER THE WORLD WITH A CHILD'S CARD GAME!!!!! No need to throw guns into the mix.

Also I posted this in another thread but I thought it would be fun here too...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtSiqZBrNNc

the many English voice talents of goku!

btw, fun fact, Peter Kelamis(the guy who replaced Ian) also voiced Rolf in Ed, Edd and Eddy. Thought that was neat. :D

While I agree the explanation for this is Duel Monsters...before it was Duel Monsters was a game the ancient sorcerers would play in order to decide who lives and dies so the Yami (dark, ancient Egyptian souls) in everyone's items would naturally feel at home doing the same ritual as back in their time using ol' Peggy's modern day version. As for taking over the world that wasn't actually done through the cards but through gaining all 7 millennium items which would give the holders the abilities to read minds, send people to another dimension (no not the DBZ one), control other beings so on and so fourth.

But I do agree there were silly scenes in the original version like Kaiba jamming a gun lock with a card which was just exasperatingly corny. So yeah no guns helps the cheese factor. (I'm definitely not saying Yugioh is serious business, it's the card game version of transformers a giant commercial for kids. )

ANYWAY DRAGONBALL...YEAH! (this is sort of on topic, discussing dubs with a bad rep n' all)

Know a lot of guys say for Yu-Gi-Oh, was like DB, in that while they don't like the censors, the censored version is what led to their fandom. They also say that they wouldn't mind if Funimation dubbed the Toei series (the one 4Kids skipped because Duel Monsters had chance at more money for them) but if they did so, they must keep 2 things from the 4Kids dub of Duel Monsters: Dan Green and Eric Stuart.
