Mix that with a little bit of "wait, 20 year old VHS recordings in EP mode are being used as 'irrefutable evidence'?" and you're 100% on track ;pVegettoEX wrote:Perhaps it's because this audience has a larger vested-interest in doing educated comparisons and analysis that there hasn't yet been enough time to do a full-scale comparison and discussion?
I'm doing my homework now with plans to post something today or tomorrow. My cat's just sick at the moment (trying to find out what it is) and I had company over last night and didn't go to sleep until 8am this morning. Busy with real life = this sort of thing takes a back seat, which I think everyone can understand.
I hope ;p

So you say, on VHS, the dynamic range can expand and the sounds get clearer through aging, huh? Or you say the master tape got worse? Anyway, you can controvert an opinion, but not a fact. Just listen. The original run sounds better. It is a fact.MajinVejitaXV wrote:Mix that with a little bit of "wait, 20 year old VHS recordings in EP mode are being used as 'irrefutable evidence'?" and you're 100% on track ;p
I have more evidence. there is another Japanese DB fan who says that the sound quality on DBOXes is clearly worse.

There is some doubt. I heard that the available DVD releases had been digitally remastered and corrected, however, putting the footage aside, the audio sounded much better on the original run. It is the same with the DBZ box. How do you figure? If there is anyone who knows about this issue, please tell me about it.

This is the Japanese audio of DBGT episode 13 ripped from the recent Spanish DVD release:

As you can hear, it's in much better quality than the Dragon Box GT audio. Unfortunatelly this only happens on vol. 2 (episodes 9-16), the other 7 volumes have the same audio quality than the Dragon Box GT.

Damn, I'm away for a day and I'm being persecuted. Give some time for a response and a comparison. I think it sounds like the VHS is just pumped up on volume. Hell, its analogue, so in its recording its going to be subject to the recording settings vs ripping the AC3 stream directly.Smooth Criminal wrote:I love how the majority of in-house DBOX enthusiasts are basically avoiding this thread like the plague.
If you want to actually compare, then you have to let the "evidence" be subject to scrutiny. VHS is better than DVD? The movies should be 4:3 (where there are more scenes than just the one already shown missing portions of the frame). I feel like I left and came back to the Twilight Zone.

Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

I know Kei hates the DBoxes... and there WAS a clear difference in the clips he posted... but I and I'm sure all of us know by now this series is 20 years old by now, expecting it to be nice neat and entirely crisp is asking a bit too much...
The DBoxes are the best quality you can get besides having good VHS Rips from back in the day... And even Kei said whoever he's getting them from doesn't have the WHOLE series...
I mean, it's really neat, but I still wants me some Dragon Box XD

There is something off in the VOB files. Did you re-compress them or something?kei17 wrote:I also noticed that the audio is out of synchronization on the episode 142 on DBOX.

Your DBox rip has an audio stream of 1+1ch 160Kbps. That's not right, it should be a full 2_0ch 448Kbps. Any chance you can fix that so a few of us can play with it?
(the VHS VOB has 2_0ch 256Kbps, a 60% increase in the bitrate compared to the DBox you posted)
Edit: Also, why is the right channel so much louder? Was this recorded/digitized properly? DBZ is in mono, so the two channels really shouldn't be vastly different, correct?

I think it has something to do with VLC player....SSj_Rambo wrote:What are you trying to play them with? Thank you so much. It is not in stereo but certainly sounds better than DBOX. I wonder how they got the audio tapes that Toei couldn't.biohazard wrote:This is the Japanese audio of DBGT episode 13 ripped from the recent Spanish DVD release:

Then you turn up the volume of DBOX audio. It will not sound good like the clip from the VHS. Because the very difference is not volume but dynamic range.ect5150 wrote:Damn, I'm away for a day and I'm being persecuted. Give some time for a response and a comparison. Sorry, it's my mistake or something is wrong with the tool. But I did not upload it for the sake of comparison of sound quality but synchronization of the audio. You can still know that with it. Or you say I did some kind of impression management by that?ect5150 wrote:There is something off in the VOB files. Did you re-compress them or something?

????

I don't know why. I think it is because of some failure of the VCR that my cousin taped off these episodes.ect5150 wrote:Edit: Also, why is the right channel so much louder? Was this recorded/digitized properly? DBZ is in mono, so the two channels really shouldn't be vastly different, correct?
