What would've made GT a better show?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

The Galactic Dragonball Hunt hurts me.

Galaxies are big. Really, really, really goddamn big. If the planet Earth was the size of a grape, our galaxy would be 55 billion miles wide. And they're supposed to be finding seven atoms randomly scattered around in this space?

And then there's the fact that somehow everybody they meet knows what a Dragonball is.

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

I actually very much like that one as is. Not EVERYTHING absolutely needs an airtight, cut and dry explanation. A little ambiguity once in awhile tends to be a good thing IMO, provided its used well. Having an element of the story be left to personal audience interpretation (in a deliberate/artistic sense mind you) I think was actually a really cool and unexpected move for the series to have taken for this particular element (Goku's departure with Shenlong). It's the kind of thing that get's people talking and bullshitting about the story over drinks afterwards, and regarding far more interesting topics than just simply "hey wasn't that fight cool?".

Some of the best and most fun discussions I've ever seen about GT tend to be over how different people personally view and interpret the meaning behind why Shenlong took Goku away. Hell, that even got a podcast episode dedicated to it once IIRC.

Throwing in a cut and dry explanation behind that would totally deflate the ending quite a good bit IMO. For all the shit GT gets (sometimes rightfully so), the entire last episode, ambiguous Goku-exit and all, tends to be the one key thing that most people tend to agree was flawlessly executed about GT. Why fuck with the single best-liked and most artistically successful episode of the whole series?
I was thinking the same thing exactly, to be honest.

But Goku always does that anyway. At least he's consistent.

Goku doesn't love ChiChi, she's just some chick that gave him a house and food. I think he just sees her as another Bulma who's constantly clinging to him.

Goku's one socially ignorant mofo of course he wouldn't think long and hard about how this decision would affect his friends and family. Has he ever shown that deep level of contemplation outside of battle?

In filler, sometimes. And GT is like filler, and even references filler. So..you'd think...eh, whatever.

He goes all the way down to Hell to say bye to Piccolo, but can't say goodbye to ChiChi?

Putting the Saiyans and Uub on the same level of relevance as the humans for no apparent reason should not have happened. Whether Goten fought Super 17 or Oolong fought Super 17, it wouldn't have changed the result in the slightest. And that's just stupid.

Also, make Soguroku Space relevant. It's basically filler within a filler show. Two episodes showcasing this bizarre, semi-interesting plane of the afterlife, all leading up to the climax of the Sugoro Family's role... Pulling out Goku's tail nub. And then chilling in Heaven. Supreme Heaven. After cheating countless people out of life.

And a better opening song would not have hurt.

He wanted to, but Pan put the master key that'd alter their course in her shirt. From there he just gave in. After the incident with Luud, Trunks does consider bringing her back to pick up Goten, but her desert trip pretty much put a stop to that.

I always assumed the one thing fans couldn't nitpick or completely tear apart about GT was the soundtrack.

GT was a bad show from the start. It really should've started with Pilaf taking over the world after all this time. Just the potential hilarity of that would've sold me.

* Better characterization and more character development:
I think it's a bad sign if 64 episodes have gone by and the viewer doesn't know any more about the main characters than he/she did in the first episode. GT Trunks' personality bothered me the most. He was a foil and that's all he was. He was just there to play the straight man. I'd rather he be spoiled and obnoxious than boring and unmotivated.

* GT had some interesting concepts, make better use of them:
I really liked the idea of the "black star dragon balls;" taking something that the characters rely too heavily on and using it against them. I thought it was a good idea to introduce a "penalty" for using them too much. Sadly it just lead to more generic villains and fights that only Goku really took part in. Pan just got beaten up, knocked unconscious, and/or got in the way. At least Trunks was spared the embarrassment this time.

I also like the fact that it gave the characters a reason to travel beyond Earth and explore new planets/environments. The new planets looked pretty cool, but the stories that went along with them were kind of dull. Although, I did like those episodes more than the ones that came later.

* More character interaction:
The characters interacted more in the opening and ending themes. That's just sad.

* Make it less Goku centric:
It would be nice if the other characters weren't just there to make Goku look better. The other main characters should have their own goals. At least I think so.

* Leave out the last episode
I really hate enormous time skips and I don't like the idea of so many generations of the Son family dying without explanation.

Oh and more recycled character designs, how original.

1.Stronger Goten and Trunks
2.Goten and Trunks fuse to Gotenks
3.Pan being less bitch
4.stronger majuub in super 17 saga
5.Vegeta with a new transformation (for example, he transforms into golden ape, fights with super 17, but 17 cuts his tail off and he can't transform into ssj4, so he fights with Goku as ssj2 and kills super 17)
6.Gohan says nono to ssj and stays in mystic stage
7.Goku should not be that powerful
8.the others must fight with the other dragons
9.Piccolo does something cool in hell
10.Pikkon

This one reminded me of something someone else suggested once, which seems so obvious but I'd never thought of. There were 7 dragons -- everyone should have split up into groups and taken them on at the same time. It would have been way more interesting that way.

Yeah, all Toriyama females become whining bitches sooner or later, no matter how much against their originally established personality it may be. It's like he's writing some mildly sexist 1960s comedy about annoying mother-in-laws. The thing that stops that being too annoying is that, as a continuation of his old-fashioned view of women, they hardly feature in DBZ (and when they do, it's in a little comedy skit or #18 before she became another nagging housewife) but since Pan is one of the main characters of GT, it grates a lot more than it did in Z.

hmm we have seven dragons and we have Goku, Gohan, Goten,Vegeta,Pan and Majuub.

Pan could take the first dragon, that green fatso
Majuub could take the thunder slimer
Goku takes ice shenron
Gohan fights with the female dragon
Goten and Trunks with the mole dragon (can't remember the names as you can see) Pan would still get absorded
Vegeta fights with Nova, Nova must transform if he wants to kick Vegeta's ass.
Vegeta and Goku are flying together when Nova and Ice come, Goku takes Ice and comes blind,Vegeta fights with Nova, kicks Vegeta's ass, Goku comes, fights with Nova, Vegeta helps,Nova unites with Goku and the others, and then everything goes like it was written

I've never gotten my head around the very first plot hole.
Pilaf should've died when Buu destroyed the Earth, and everyone EXCLUDING those who are evil were wished back so how is Pilaf alive?

Maybe he wasn't that evil I don't know but they could start by explaining that to me.

How about not making Majuub suck/useless 5 mins after the merger, a great character idea, but sucky role in the series.

Some of the sagas seemed like sucky recycled versions of the dbz sagas.
Super 17 saga was a horrible rehash of the Android saga and Movie 12.

The Machine planet (or whatever you called it ) where Guru comes from and general Rildo seemed like Red Ribbon Army android rejects. Bebi seemed like Babidi, with with fighting skills no magic but retained his ability to take control of others.

In my opinion only the Shadow Dragon saga had in any orginality in it in concept, but they messed that saga up too, i'm mean for once can a fusion character not be too cocky and actually defeat a villian?
