This has got to be some of the worst censoring ever.

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

From an economical point of view, Ultimate Muscle as well. Did better here than it did in Japan, to the point they made a second season for the US that way I heard gave it a better conclusion. Hence it's usually commented as the only Jump show that company got right.

Their best dub was probably their uncut Yu-gi-oh! dub. Only did nine episodes I think. Anyways, they didn't have Sean at the time, so he would not have voiced Goku. Their dub would be Freeza Saga awfulness for the entirety of the series, made worse with their name changes and censoring. Son Gokuh would be Goku Son (pronounced Goh-kyoo Suhn assuming they don't rename him). *sigh*

Though, if the Evil Empire (AKA 4Kids) dubbed Dragon Ball Z, I'm sure it would be a lot like the Korean dub. They seem to hate Japan, as well. Actually, they also hate English. There's been times when they censored English writing on of things. :/ I cannot comprehend 4Kids.
4Kids hate is so 2005.

FWIW- One of their latest dubs, Dinousaur King, doesn't hide the fact it takes place it Japan.

I believe it has to do with the fact that Arabia is largely Islamic and Islam holds that any part of a woman’s body aside from her face and hands is sexual, and therefore shameful to show in public as they should be reserved only for their husbands.

In Bulma’s case, she is wearing much less than would be considered appropriate by cultural standards, so rather than drawing a whole new set of clothes over her frame-by-frame, they went the easy route and edited her out altogether.

I wish you could stop bashing at our censorship like we are the only ones who does these kind of stuff

Yeah, we somtimes hate it, but it's supposed to be for our own good... or so they say...

One other thing is, it's from 2003. That's 6 years ago.

The dub didn't have the technology to do somthing like this at that time

Image

Have you ever watched the Arabic dub of Digimon Tamers (2005?)? The editing was near perfect that you can't tell that they edited it out like Culumon's triangles and the cross on Hirokazu's shirt.

Till this day, I still think Digimon Tamers was the best dubbed series by Venus... I don't know if they kept doing the same thing with their new stuff, but the point is...

Their dub today is not as bad as it was years ago.

By that account though, they couldn't show any of the Dragonball women, even the ones who dress modestly still bare their arms. And there's a VA for Bulma as evidence by the VA post someone just made.

I believe I remember the outfit Bulma was wearing in that scene... blue tube-top and little white shorts right? I'd expect them to cover her up more (like the FUNi dub's handling of Marron- pull that yellow swimsuit out a little more to hide the cleavage) to get closer to local standards of dress, but completely removing the character when she isn't even in her worst outfit?

Whoever posted this thread again with access to this footage- how do they handle Bulma (and Ranchi, since the voices listed her being in there and she wears about as much as Bulma in this scene) throughout the episodes? I mean, she can't be taken out of everything. How does it work?

I wouldn't really have a problem with that. It IS his surname after all. I guess I shouldn't've included it with stuff I'm complaining about. It was just a last minute thought.

I said this on the chat earlier, for a 4kids styled dub I wanted to try out, Son Goku would be changed to Sonny Skye...

It was similar with our Digimon Tamers. Pretty much only thing they took out were buildings blowing up (show premiered a few days before 9/11).

I'm guessing they handled her similar to how the Brits handled Michelangelo until the company making the series decided to make things easier for them and gave him a grappling hook.

That always pissed me off! Even more so that Michelangelo's nunchuk scenes had to be worked around in the TMNT movie a few years back.

Which is a special level of retarded because nunchaku aren't even real weapons and they have by far the least killing potential of all of the boy's weapons.....

I have to ask on topic again though- I was aware there was a lot more than WWII (as noted in one of my earlier posts) though I wasn't aware of the specifics of the thing till they were pointed out for us. But the big question here is if there's hatred that deep between the countries why do they want their children to be watching a Japanese cartoon? Why not just... not bring it over and make Korean cartoons instead, or dub things from countries they didn't want to burn alive?

Well the Koreans animate a lot of anime anyway. Underpaid Koreans I might add.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

If you do your research, cel animators really don't make a lot. Even the in-house ones in Japan. It amazes me how much the anime industry has even stuck around this long considering this kind of practice.
