I read somewhere before that...

I read somewhere before that Toriyama originally didn't want Cell to have different forms. That one day he came to his editor with the idea for Cell and his editor said something along the lines of "What is this bug?!", so he gave him a seccond form, and then his editor said something along the lines of "He's TOO UGLY!" so he gave him his final form.

Does anyone know if this story has any truth to it?

I don't know about that; I think Toriyama always intended on having Cell evolve, but I do recall hearing that Toriyama really liked Cell's first two forms, but his editor hated them. Frankly, I think everyone hates his second form.

It's true. Toriyama's editor didn't like Cell's first form, so Toriyama created his second form to make Cell "perfect". But Cell's second form was considered even uglier, so he had Cell transform again. Cell's second form is one of Toriyama's favorite character designs(Ironic, huh? :P I thought it looked kind of cool.). I remember he once said in an interview something like "If the villain transforms depends on if my editor likes them." I wonder if Frieza had anything like that involved in his many transformations?

Well I only remember that his editor complained about the look of #19 and #20. That they were pretty much lame. So Toriyama went back and created #17 and #18, and I guess to really stick it to his editor, #16.

I remember reading an interview, maybe it was the same one as you, but Toriyama originally intended to use #19 and #20 as the main villains. Then his editor complained about the way they looked so Toriyama created #17 and #18. His editor thought they were just some punk kids and shouldn't be the main villains, so Toriyama created Cell. Some more complaining from his editor eventually led to him create Perfect Cell.

I can't seem to find the interview at the moment but when I do I'll post it.

Yep. 19 and 20 were intended to be the main villains for that saga (wonder how that would have went?) but the editors didn't think they looked very 'evil and dangerous' and told him to make more. Thus 16, 17, and 18 were born. I think Toriyama-sama created Cell for the same reason as 16, just to go XP to the editors. And I personally think Cell's first and second forms are cool.

I can see it happening like this...

Toriyama-sama: What's up?

Editor: 19 looks like a fat clown and 20 looks like my Grandfather. They're not 'fear inducing', make new Androids.

Toriyama-sama: Blargh, ok. *days later* Say hello to 17 and 18! Oh, and what's more, 16 and Cell too! (Hehe, take THAT! XP)

Editor: The numbered ones are okay, but that Cell guy looks UGLY as hell. Ditch him.

Toriyama-sama: (Crap, now what? Oh, I know!) But wait! Cell absorbs 17 and 18 becoming even stronger! See, this is Semi-Perfe...

Editor: Still Ugly.

Toriyama-sama: Er, well, this is Perfect Cell.

Editor: Love it! Now, go get to work or no cookies.

Which would people say were more annoying to mangaka such as Toriyama...?

The editors with their constant demands...

Or the fans with their constant requests?

Perhaps the editors are more annoying because mangakas have to do what they want, and fans sometimes have great ideas and don't DEMAND nothing.
