Sorry, but I don't think One Piece has ever churned out a Freeza or a Piccolo Daimao.
Well, in the first season, the one non-fans are most familiar with, not really. But once you get to the "Z" portion of One Piece, there's all these badass villains with a lot more story and depth. See, just about every major character has a backstory to why they're doing what they're doing.
I mean there's Crocodile, Eneru, Doflamingo, Kuma, Rob Lucci (badass as hell), Blackbeard, Moria, and so many more.

An in-depth backstory doesn't make a good villain in my eyes. A good villain needs me to truly hate them, want them dead, etc... Freeza fits this bill perfectly. He's a cold blooded, sadistic murderer who's killed off entire species just for the hell of it, and on top of that, it's his freakin' business. No One Piece villain has ever made me feel this sense of "I truly want this fucker dead..."

Out of curiosity, how far have you read?

Because I'll also admit, while I've certainly cheered to myself whenever the baddies get their asses kicked, the first villain to ever really invoke the emotions you've described is Spandam, and he does come rather late into the story. Then the World Nobles were the next, and they're even later.

Lucci gave me nightmares, for what it's worth. XD That scene where he killed off the Marines in that locked room one-by-one must've creeped me out more than I realized.

The first villain that's really frustrated me is Arlong, though that's mainly because Luffy is a moron when it comes to not killing him (How are the Marines supposed to detain him? He can bite through steel! He can take a direct hit from a shotgun in the mouth! Kill him while you have the chance, God damn it!)

Well, I've never actually read the manga, just watched the anime. I think the last episode I saw was...about 100-110? It's been quite a while, but I remember thinking the villains weren't all that impressive.

So yeah...I'm not a big fan of One Piece, as you've already gathered.

You haven't seen anything. Episode 227 is where it really starts.

I'd have finished Alabasta were I you, at the very least. Crocodile's right up there with Freeza, to be honest.

But alas, time is ever so short...

If the first 100 or-so episodes didn't really grab me, then I fail to see the point in continuing to watch it. So I'm going to have to decline.

Yeah, that's true. The show grabbed me during the Kuro arc (Which is episodes 9-17), and I enjoyed Buggy quite a bit as well. The only part I'm meh on is Romance Dawn.

Well, its the same thing with Dragon Ball. Let's be honest, there are still many people (not here on Daizex but everywhere else) that are DBZ fans but don't like Dragon Ball.

If DBZ wasn't shown first here, and the two weren't separated as almost 2 different series, many people who are now fans of the franchise wouldn't be fans because the first 100 or so episodes would put them off. But since DB and DBZ are "apparently separate" this isn't the case.

One Piece is a great successor to DB without being the same. It seems to be massively inspired by DB without stooping to brainless imitation. And interesting thing is that Oda says that he doesn't care if they fights are epic or not and doesn't really care how they go; he just does them to let off steam from the adventure (though of course, I guess more and more focus gets put on them because it's what the average shounen fan wants).

I just love how it doesn't have any of the emo, teenage angst crap that Bleach and Naruto seem to be rolling in, like pigs in shit. Ichigo has to be one of the worst fictional characters I've ever seen, never mind worst shounen character. And Naruto has become a "Dattebayo" spewing self-parody, it seems.

I'm only on about episode 60 of One Piece but I really love it. Like DB/Z, it's established its core characters and themes so well that even if it does go down more typical shounen routes (god-like enemies and loads of tournaments, etc) I won't mind too much. I'm more a DBZ fan than a DB fan, but I still really love seeing the characters I know and love in their formative years, so I guess if One Piece becomes "One Piece Z" it'll just be the same thing in reverse.

I need to watch more of One Piece to form an intelligent opinion.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

When you begin reading One Piece, be sure to be reeeaaallly patient. It takes a while to really start picking up(Don't get me wrong, the beginning is good.) What I did was basically just start with the anime and go up through the Alabasta arc, then I skipped the Skypiea arc entirely(I"ll go back to it later) and then I just went with the manga from Enies Lobby onward.

I completely agree.

However, there are some absolutely awesome One Piece villians. I mean, there's Arlong, Crocodile and Enel, but I think it really gets great when we start to look at the world government. The Shichibukai, Admirals, Vice Admirals, CP9 and many, many more world government members are not only badasses and powerful, but their designs and Devil fruits are what really does it for me.

Which is why I fucking love the arc the manga is currently at :D

Start at the Kuro arc. Hardly anything happens before it that you won't pick up as it progresses. And you can run through One Piece's slow startup quicker... since you're skipping most of it.

Also, read the manga, "Toei" is Japanese for "stupid." If anyone tells you it's "baka," they're lying.

The resemblance of the two series is pretty subtle and only really noticeable in manga sales plus abstractness, what with Oda being the poalr opposite of Toriyama in writing, but it's still a fun read(and was an okay watch...)

The Skypiea Arc was really slow and somewhat boring. But to be honest, I had only started reading the manga on June 24,2009, and as of now, I'm on chapter 448. I'll just say this: Brook is the best anime character with an afro that I've ever seen.
