Why wouldn't they be able to translate Goku's speech there? <_<

Gah, and it's reversed too. Here, lemme translate it for the heck of it (keep in mind that since this page is flipped, the order is left to right):

[Goku has just said that as he is now, he can't win against Cell]
GOKU: But... wait one day...!!
Then, I'll definitely be able to beat you to a pulp!!

CELL: Ha ha ha... In case I misunderstood you,
Did you say that you could beat me in one day's time?

GOKU: That's right.

CELL: And just what can you do in only one day?!
Eh?!

GOKU: Huh?
[Goku senses Piccolo's ki, and retrieves both Tenshinhan and Piccolo]

Isn't DB a really simple manga also, translation wise?

Well, some parts are, and other parts are more difficult. Goku is generally really easy to translate -- nice and straightforward, and even his way of speaking isn't that bad. But there are some that (for me, at least) are frustrating to make them sound good. Kami-sama and Piccolo come to mind. 'Course, that could just be because I'm only a 2nd-year student of Japanese. But yeah. :)

Most Fanslators ARE dumb. Do I have to remind you of the "Rapid Fuck You Fuck You Missile"?

And I took 2 1/2 years of Japanese, and know close to diddly squat. Of course, my sensei sucked.

Fan translations suck not only because they often leave things untranslated, but also because it often ends up being Engrish. Other than that, the quality of the translations becomes really poor, and that little page especially since its "flopping" makes the art look like crap.

This really pissed me off...

Rou-Kaioushin "...sakki no dekai Majin Buu ni natta no jyana?"
Kibito-Shin "Hai....."

Rou-Kaioushin: "And he turned into that big Majin Buu from a while ago?"
Kibito-Shin: "Yes..."

And the fan translation?!

Image

Rou Kaioushin "Is that how he became the Fat Buu?"
Kibito-Shin "No..."

<_<

I believe Dragon Ball Z was the very first manga to be scanned and translated on the web so I'd cut 'em slack. At the time these rare DBZ manga scans were done more for the novelty than anything else. Unflopped manga was basically unheard of, too.

Today scanslations fill their task of giving me my Berserk and Gantz fix :)

Yeah, I'm guessing some of those crazy speeches about fusion, the afterlife, powerlevels, ect, must be a pain in the ass to translate.

Have manga scanlations ever really been legal?

Is that from the much-spoken of Hongfire torrent of the manga, by any chance?

Yeah, let's not talk about downloading mainstream licensed manga. That'd be great :).

If you download a lot of scanslated (or whatever they're calling it) manga, you're bound to find some awful quality work out there.

One of my favorites (most frustrating) was in Rurouni Kenshin, I'm thinking. Half a page or so (plenty of text) untouched, with "IF YOU KNOW JAPANESE YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS" written underneath. What the fuck? If I knew Japanese, wouldn't I be reading raws? It makes me want to hurt somebody.

I'll just stick to buying the official version for £4 off Amazon.co.uk. They may have been censored, words changed etc. but at least I have a legal version of the managa and I'm showing support for a company who may translate more manga in the future that I'd like to read.
