Hmm. Personally I think both versions suffered a bit here.
Up until PuiPui first goes flying (Ur, at least that's what it sounds like...), the Japanese score feels appropriate.
As soon as the fighting gets serious, Puipui is clearly outclassed and Vegeta plays with his food, the Japanese music sounds rather disconnected with what's going on. It sounds like stock music--which makes sense, since it's a relatively minor scene--but... Meh.
FUNi version... up to PuiPui's first "got sent flying", Vegeta's signature theme has a strange... I dunno, it feels very out of place.
As the scene progressed, I heard the first piano bits from "Super Saiyan Vegeta", to which I was verbally pleading it didn't start said song for so minor a scene. And what do you know, it did...
... I think that this was mono on youtube had two effects in this instance. Ur, and the speakers for this computer seem a bit different in terms of balance from what I'm used to...
But anyway, the music seemed a bit toned down, so it didn't feel like it was the same intensity as usual... but there were places where the mixing would have benefited immensely from use of stereo.
Eh, so buildup, the Japanese score wins, hands down.
The "serious" bit? I think both versions dropped the ball, but the FUNi version was choreographed better (I like how the music synched up with the final blow), so I guess dub gets the edge.
I'm beginning to get the impression that the Kikuchi score struggles more in the Buu saga. What I've heard of the Saiya(ji)n saga seems mostly appropriate...
Which is roughly the opposite of how the dub score works. Note that I'm not including pre-Raditz here.
I wonder, though; both scores kinda went 'meh' to me in these scenes... I wonder if the "different show" thing is constant?
*confused*
