Dragon Ball references
This is a topic all about DB references in games. A place for discussion on anything from Super Saiyan hair in WWE games to the most recent one (which inspired me to make this thread), an achievement in Guitar Hero 5 that references "IT'S OVER 9000!!!" Which references do you like? Which ones annoy you? Do you know of any that aren't widely known?

That's a Street Fighter reference. Back in the day, the Hadouken was known as the "Fire Ball", and the Shouryuuken as the "Dragon Punch". The Worms series parodies these two attacks, mixing up their names, thus giving the Shouryuuken attack the name "Fire Punch" and the Hadouken attack the name "Dragon Ball".The Time Traveller wrote:In the Worms games there's always been an attack called Dragon Ball... That's all I really know...

Knuckles and Silver? Silver is clearly Trunks. Boy from the future with silver hair who comes to the past to save the future. Sonic and Shadow are pretty obviously Goku and Vegeta.B wrote:Oh lol, Sonic in general. Angel Island is based off of Kaioh-sama's planet. Then there's Knuckles and Silver.Timo wrote:Of course (Super) Sonic and the seven Chaos Emeralds.

And since Shadow is Vegeta, Knuckles would clearly be Piccolo.
Knuckles is Sonic's rival from the end of the Genesis Sonic games, which many people consider superior to the games that followed. Early on in the new games, a new rival for Sonic named Shadow appears, who is a hedgehog just like Sonic. He starts out as a villain, but as time goes on turns into an anti-hero, and eventually a hero. However, he clearly stole his song and dance from Knuckles, and is nowhere nearly as cool as Knuckles is, except for in the eyes of 10 year olds across the internet who never played the original games.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Super Sonic was actually influenced by Super Saiya-jin. I mean, Super Saiya-jin premiered in 1991 and Super Sonic in 1992. I think all those references between Sonic and Dragon Ball aren't unintentional. I guess the creators of the Sonic series just love Dragon Ball....
Speaking of Dragon Ball/Sonic similarities:

Anybody see the similarity?
Akira Toriyama did like to reuse characters.... Perhaps laziness?Adamant wrote:More or less.
How many familiar faces do you see here?
Anyway, I see Yamcha, both Gohans, that guy with the big beard from the Other World Tournament (forgot the Japanese term for it. Anoyoichi Budokai right?), two Shenlongs, Tenshinhan with hair and two eyes, Mai, and then a very blatant Lunch off on the right side. Any of you see anyone else?

You know I've always preferred Knuckles over Shadow, and I know some of that is because I knew Knuckles first (the rest is that, well, I just like Knuckles character in general more). I can't help but wonder if I'd prefer Piccolo over Vegeta if I'd been introduced to DB before Z.
Oh! Other ripped-from-Dragon-Ball Sonic notes:
The floating island from Sonic 3 =/ Kami-sama's Lookout in DB.
The comics actually took it a step further a while back; they've got a Sun Wukong type character (who is a monkey) they introduced many years ago who's got a nyoi-bo and kinto'un. (Though ironically he's a bit too stuffy to fit Wukong's personality OR Goku's.)
On hiatus.

My younger brother and I have actually had extended conversations on this topic, and they're less-than-complimentary but hysterical at the same time. It always ends up leaving me mourning the way Sega's slowly killing itself with the crap they've been pumping out though... Well at least Pic gets to be the cool guy.Taku128 wrote: (snip-YOU CAN'T UNSEE IT-pic)

Rory, thanks for reminding me of Power Stone ^^ I always made that connection but over the years I'd forgotten about it.
As for the wrestlers with customizable SSJ hair... pics please?

Holy shit, never thought they'd borrow that heavily from Dragonball, though I could tell which personalities each character borrowed from(I rolled my eyes at Silver). Let's be thankful Vegeta never had a shitty spin-off game eh?
On a side note, I hate Shadow because he actually was a good character to begin with, and unlike Vegeta, he loses character as the story continues, he's just a pathetic waste now.
Oh, and to contribute to this Sonic reference compilation, the special stages from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 are inspired by Kaio-Sama's planet.
If that counts, then the Mega Man series has had two Wukong-inspired characters so far, both monkeys with extendable nyoibous - Hanumachin and Buster Rod Goku.Chuquita wrote: The comics actually took it a step further a while back; they've got a Sun Wukong type character (who is a monkey) they introduced many years ago who's got a nyoi-bo and kinto'un.
