I don't know if Funi would release THAT much stuff. Maybe a few commentaries, interviews, trailers, but that could be it. Funimation's never been too keen on putting a shit-ton of special features in one set. And half that stuff's Japanese, which in the US, is aimed at the "Hardcore Fans" as Funi puts it.
I could care less what Funi puts in as "Extras", all I want is Dragonbox footage, damnit!

Next quest: Buy the Super: Broly and Super Hero Blurays, also Daima whenever that releases in the states. Also the Super Manga!

Well, I think my only real issue with Funimation right now, as far as DBZ is, that they still have not given us a good English dub for the show. We had the Ocean dub with somewhat decent voices, but terrible cuts and bad scripting, and the in-house Funi dub with awful voices, but with less (or no) cuts (that also had bad scripting).
I know the argument, "Nobody's forcing you to watch the dub." That's true. But you'd think after all these years, they would have given the fans a dub that didn't hurt the ears and make our eyes roll. Mondo nuts, indeed.
And frankly, I'll believe they haven't screwed with the video when I've got the first disc of the Dragon Box in my DVD player, and not a moment before that.
Don't get me wrong. Funimation has actually become an admirable licensor, for several reasons. Their English dubs have improved over time, they've licensed several excellent titles like Fullmetal Alchemist and Darker than Black, and they've rescued other titles from failed licensors. They even have their own television channel and have streaming options for anime on their site. They largely deserve their position in the market as the big giant of anime licensors.
But their history with DBZ is spotty at best, and I won't know whether I can trust them entirely with it until I get the Dragon Box.
I hope all the extras aren't dub-related. Am I supposed to care what scrubs like Chris Sabat and Mike McFarland thought of the characters of the show? I have a feeling they'll be padding the translated Japanese extras with their self-serving garbage.

For some reason, I have a feeling that they're gonna do a full Season 3 redub for these sets. I don't why, I just do.

If you had a better understanding of the characters you might not prefer them to have generic muscle men voices.LeprikanGT wrote:"Ear hurting" voices are really a matter of opinion. I happen to love the Funi voices with Chris Sabat and all of them b/c thats what I grew up listening to and as much as I LOVE DBZ I cant stand to listen to the high pitched shrills of the Japan voice cast.
The Japanese voices have character, spirit. The English voices are mostly just wooden, cookie-cutter tough guy voices. Just folks grunting into a microphone. It's sickening.

Seriously though, you do know that whole "most fitting voice" ordeal is completely subjective right? I hate the dub but Jesus Christ.
My friend broke my PSP just in time for Naruto Ultimate Ninja 5 to come out....WHOOOO!

Hm interesting, I always thought the sub voices were cool because the characters didn't always have one pitch or sound to their voice. The characters voices changed to reflect their mood something I didn't see a lot in most dubs or cartoons. Just goes to show how subjective the matter is eh?LeprikanGT wrote:Still its an opinion.
I think the US voices have more range, where as the japanese voices just sound like the same person yelling in a high pitched voice, even during b*d*ss fight scenes.

I only hear a "range" of generic tough guy voices in the English dub, without any subtlety.LeprikanGT wrote:Still its an opinion.

For example, Masako Nozawa is not just a great Goku because of her voice pitch, but because of her delivery. The little nuances to Goku's speech pattern. Nobody in any English dub has ever done that right.
But whatever, opinions. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

Badass.
I really hate when that word is together with Dragonball. Note that what I'm about to say reflects to NO ONE on this forum. But, do we need endless guitar solos when Freeza is STARING at Gokuu? NO! When I was a fan of the dub and bought Season Five, I would watch the dub WITH the JP score. Why? I like it more. Now the dub music is good. By itself. With Dragonball not so much.

Wow, this thread grew since I last looked at it!
I have a few things to say about what's been said, so if what I say at first isn't completely to what was last said, I apologize. I will adress the current issue as well, though.
This whole "FUNimation's an abuser!" and "how can you forgive FUNimation" thing is pretty funny. For once, I'm going to have to agree completely with jjgp1112. FUNimation is a company. It's not the evil street bully, it's a company that dubs, subs, and distributes anime. As a company their quality is rather high. Unfortunatly, law of averages comes into play with their very first license, Dragon Ball. But they're constantly trying to feed the demands of its customers. They've often failed to satiate a small niche of fans. A small niche I belong to, but a small niche regardless.
Now, however, they're actually aiming at us. It's not a matter of "forgiving" FUNimation, it's a matter of "Holy shit! They're aiming at me for once!"
Like the company or not, they're finally aiming at those of us in the small niche that preffer the Japanese original. "Forgiveness" isn't something you should be thinking. One of two responses are valid here. One is extreme elation at the situation, the other is extreme caution. I suppose somewhere between works too. Due to the fact FUNimation's never really targeted this demographic before with DBZ, it's natural to be skeptical that they really are doing so.
But screaming how you can never forgive FUNimation is both unproductive, and makes you look silly.
Okay, with that off my chest I should adress the "voices fitting" argument thats bringing back the dub vs sub argument. While I don't like DBZ's dub very much, outside of a few instances (Chain Smooking Granny Freeza, ATM Machine #19, No Emotion #16, and a few others) I think the voice cast of DBZ is just fine. But I feel the script and music changes ruin the otherwise good casting. Regardless of how you feel about this the whole "it fits/doesn't fit" is an opinion. It's how you feel, it's how I feel, it's how someone else feels.
I can say that the Japanese voice cast's dialogue is more accurate to the manga original. THAT is a fact. Saying they fit more? An opinion. One you're welcome to, but going around treating it as a fact is just silly.

What do guys want FUNi to do? Hire all new Voice Actors that sound more like the Japanese Version, make all new scrips for all 291 episodes of DBZ to be more procise to the Japanese version, yet still blend it in to the mouth moving, and have just as many features as the Japanese DBOX, even though there were only 2 Japanese DBOXs and 7 U.S. DBOXs? Come on Guys, be logical. If the U.S. DBOXs had the same extras as the Japanese DBOXs, they'd either have a lot less per Box, or have most of 1 on 1 box, and none on the other. So, to make it even, they probaly have some of the extras on DBOX 1 from the original Japanese DBOXs, and some other extras that they put in. Also, the Japanese Voice Actors only sound good when talking in Japanese. You wouldn't enjoy it if they used the Japanese Vioce Actors for the U.S. version as it wouldn't sound good with them talking in English. And Goku dosen't sound Big and Buff and Manly. There are other dub versions, where Goku's vioce is really deep, which is worse than the English Dub.
Oh, and personally, i wouldn't ming a little interview of Sean Shimmeal and Chris Sabat, becase Chris Sabat is awsome.
