The program you use has absolutely nothing to do with your end product if your imagination and video concept doesn't require the use of some "more powerful" program to achieve that vision.

We've talked about this endlessly at conventions and panels. If all your video idea requires is simple cuts and fades, there is nothing that Windows Movie Maker can't do for you. Furthermore, if you don't already have a keen sense of timing and flow, as well as a masterful art of fades and simple cuts, nothing Vegas, Premiere, After Effects, etc. can provide you will be of any artistic use to you.

You have to know the basics. It sounds horribly cliché, but it's so ridiculously true. Not every video requires meticulous masking, shatter effects, particles, etc.

Even additionally furthermore to add on top of all that, you can make any program work for whatever tech you need. If you have a grasp on the video codec technology you're actually using, you'll rarely run into issues other than memory leaks due to poor programming... which has nothing to do with you. WMM crashing 'cuz you're always using downloaded XviD and Matroska files? There's a reason for that... namely being that those formats were never intended to be edited with. Work with something lossless or at least with a good number of keyframes... something whose purpose is to be editing with (like MJPEG).

That all being said, I'd like to upload a nicer encode of our "Enter the Dragon" video from the final DDR Project at some point... maybe tonight...?

I disagree with some of this. I do agree that the editor is a lot more important than the editing program and that if your good enough you can create magnificant projects no-matter what program you use, however I believe that when comparing Windows Movie Maker to a Program like Sony Vegas (even though you can find better than SV), theres just things that you simply cannot do and that does effect your ending video. But com'on, When I used to make AMV's with WMM I spent like an hour importing 1 episode .

You've completely missed the entire point of my post.

I never said that programs like Vegas and After Effects do not have additional capabilities that programs like Windows Movie Maker does not itself have; it would be ridiculous to place them on the save level, and I did not do so. You're completely mis-reading and making this up.

What I actually said was that if the concept of the video does not require those additional capabilities, there is nothing you can't do within Windows Movie Maker. To avoid using some of my own videos as examples, take a look at "This Is DBZ Life". Do you know what was used to make this video?

Cuts. Straight cuts. A couple fades.

You don't need anything other Windows Movie Maker to do that. Granted, Scott happened to make the video in a version of Adobe Premiere, but it wasn't the tool that made the video... it was the concept. "This Is DBZ Life" as it existed in Scott's head would not have benefited from anything that After Effects could offer, so it wasn't necessary to use some advanced program just for the sake of using it.

Our buddy Scintilla (no DBZ videos) extensively used Windows Movie Maker earlier in his AMV adventures, and not only did he make beautiful looking videos (by doing things properly like using DVD sources and cleaning them up ahead of time), but ended up winning some awards with those WMM-made videos.

I'll be a dick and go on record as saying that if you can't move someone on an emotional level with a video that consists of nothing more than cuts and fades, you're most likely never going to do it with all your fancy-shmancy effects. Learn your basics, understand what the Hell it is you're actually doing, and you'll do wonders later on.

That's not WMM's fault. I've spent no more than 5 minutes uploading entire movies.

It kinda is, SV takes me less than a second to import an episode.

You must have a different version of WMM than me.

I'm not trying to start a fight or anything, I do agree that SV is a GREAT program, but WMM is a good program, as well. I swear, I have absolutely NO problems with it! :D

I'll try to make an AMV later on tonight if I have time.

Alright, I just whipped this one up real quick. (It's freshly uploaded so there may not be a High Quality link yet)

Clickity Click

Just a short one I did with the song "Nami Kaze Satellite". (The 7th Opening to the Naruto anime)
