Dragonball Season 1 Discussion
Akira, while I never agree with how godofchaos goes about his criticisms, he's right. Smart-mouthed? Yes. Kid who knows nothing, no. His site The Fanboy Review has an in-depth review of the set and includes screenshots. I doubt he'd doctor them all just to mess with us - in fact, I know that's impossible. The PS3 has an option to stretch, perhaps that's on rather than the TV's?
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Toss your disc once through a cleaner. Or rewind on the spot it freezes at. That usually works for me and makes the issue never happen again (yeah I know it's weird.)omegacwa wrote:ANYWAY........
I have had this set for a week now, I think, and I have a few questions.
Did anyone's set freeze on the episode "Oolong the Terrible"?
Also, On one of the 21st Budokai Episodes the video gets stuck on the Budokai Sign for a few seconds but the sound is of people fighting, it's during a last episode recap. I'm not sure of the episode number.
My friend broke my PSP just in time for Naruto Ultimate Ninja 5 to come out....WHOOOO!
It may well be the PS3 then, as I am not very fond of it. I've had issues with my DVD player freezing on me, so I was using it instead. I have everything set up properly, and know how to use the television correctly. So, the PS3 doing something different may well be the explanation here. I'll try it on another player and see if I get other results.
Nonetheless, his remarks are uncalled for and childish. He should expect nothing more than a harsh response when he acts like that. Regardless weither he runs a decent website or not has no bearing on his behavior and should not be used as a crutch or an excuse for poor choices.

It shouldn't be officially shipping for another few days yet, but some people have it. Check out godofchaos' review for a lot of info, but no pictures of the inside of the box I'm afraid.nathantheguitarist wrote:Wait, is this out already?
Anyone have pics of the box inside and out and stuff?
Not that I want one of these, but it's still nice to see!

Okay, so besides the early shipments, this officially hits store shelves this Tuesday, right?

And you are using it as a DVD player....
so I was right.
'holds up balloon to celebrate'
PS- To show I am a nice guy, I wont even go into detail on you claiming you know what you are doing, the bragging about having a '120hz HDMI cable'.... beyond mentioning it here

Well, in my case, I ordered it from righstuf and got it a few days ago. They usually ship stuff out a bit early.Super Sonic wrote:I'm wondering how these guys got them early. Went to Best Buy to get it, and it wasn't in at all. Not even any signs of new release.
Oh, as for the PS3 thing Akira, I watched some Season 1 on mine and it was in the correct aspect ratio, so it is capable of displaying it correctly. Perhaps you accidentally changed something while messing around in the XMB at some point?
Not a problem.

I'm glad that you make assumptions that I'm a recluse or that you know anything about me at all (or that sending rude little private messages to me veiled as a mock apology mean anything to me, especially when you prove how much you mean it with your snotty little comment above.) I don't "slam" people at all to make myself feel better. I "slam" people in the hopes that they will spend the time to learn shit before they spout their misinformation.Akira wrote:I had the Upscaler set to "Full Screen" when it needed to be set to "Normal". I honestly think that is an honest mistake, considering 4:3 is often referred to as "Full Screen Mode". I'm glad that my error allowed a recluse to slam someone online and feel better about themselves.
But as I said, your equipment was not set up right, I'm glad that my advice was listened to and you checked the settings and fixed them (you really do need to look into your 120hz cables though, cause you got scammed.)
One thing I've since noticed about the set, the dub audio is quite a bit richer than I remember it being on the old set (I knew they had redone it as 5.1, but this seems better quality also, not just remixed to channels.) Might just be memory playing a trick on me though.

I was very skeptical with people in this thread saying Funimation's remastered DB season 1 was better than the Dragonbox. At first I didn't really care, because I'm more focused on DBZ. But then I was talking to someone today about Funimation's Dragonball Season 1 remastered release. And I just wanted to inform you guys of his opinion through his extensive experience in quality checking(anime mostly). So you are aware of what you are potentially buying.
Again, he does a lot of quality checking on animes with comparing R2J to Region 1 releases. So what he did was compare the Dragonball Season 1 remastered sets with the Dragonball R2J sets(also R4 too) by watching both eps in motion. Rather than just compare pictures.
Here are some points he made:
-The color on Funi's is faded and there is tons of awful dot-crawl through every ep (better seen when you watch the video in motion)
-The real remastered (R2J) has almost no dot-crawl, much more detail, and the colors are bright, rich and unfaded.
-The old funi DVD9 release is faded like the new, but has less dot-crawl.
-Funimation's old release is better than the remastered one even.
You can take this with a grain of salt if you want (I have known him for a while and this is what he does is quality check anime, and he is being very honest). And I'm not going to jam this down your throat. But If I were you, I would wait to see what else Funimation puts out(Like Dragonboxes). Or settle with Funimation's older release rather than Funimation's remastered sets.
Again, the main thing he is saying is the remastered is no better (or barely any better) than the original release.

It's kind of like what happened with my Mystical Adventure disc that came with the Dragon Ball Movie Box. It was, and still is, very scratched. When I first put it in my DVD player, it wouldn't play without freezing a bunch of times. After about 3 or 4 uses, it started playing normally even with scratches. I did try to clean off the scratches, but only a few of them came off.Freeza.exe wrote:Toss your disc once through a cleaner. Or rewind on the spot it freezes at. That is still very odd to me.
On topic, this comes out in two days. I'll probably get it on Wednesday. This'll just tide me over until the DB Dragon Boxes....
I own the season sets and the original release for Dragonball. I like Dragonball's season sets over the previous release. Looks way better IMO.SSVegetto wrote:Again, the main thing he is saying is the remastered is no better (or barely any better) than the original release.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

The video isn't perfect (due to the source material), and it's zoomed in slightly as well (probably to cover up some cel glue/damage), but it's fullscreen 4:3 DB, and it looks better than the 2-Disc and the Madman sets, the Japanese track has no problems, so this is a quality release in my book. I'm happy with this & my GT Season Sets, and the upcoming Dragon Boxes for Z.
I personally don't feel the need to triple-dip on DB again for the Dragon Boxes. The only reason I'm doing so for Z is because I want that series in 4:3, and to be done with the widescreen issue.

Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.
