What if Funimation NEVER released DVDs for the series?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

If they never released DVDs of the series, I probably would be slightly less of a fan, simply because collecting and watching the DVDs has been the main reason the show stays in the forefront of my mind all the time.

Spike Spencer as Krillin.
We're asking if Funi never released it on DVD, not if they never dubbed it.
I imagine that if they never released it, it would be because they didn't license it. There'd be no other reason not to release it.

In which case, I'm guessing another licensor, likely ADV who used to license everything they could get their hands on, would have licensed it. Or perhaps Pioneer.

This was back in the day before ADV and Pioneer died off, of course.

A quality fansubbing group probably would have made it their pet project by 2003 and would still be working on subtitling it today. As a result, a lot of us would have different attitudes towards piracy.

^This is the most likely and funniest option I've seen so far.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Same, this fansubbing group would consist of Herms, SaiyaJedi (Julian) and Daimao (Steve Simmons). At least, that seems like that would work.

I could see that as a possibility, but by 2003, though?

Wait, when did the Dragon Boxes originally come out? It probably would have started shortly after that.

Seasons 1-4 of Digimon have all been licensed and dubbed. They have never been released on DVD. Just because something is licensed doesn't mean there has to be a home release. (Also, to my understanding... I believe the Johto arcs of Pokémon haven't been released on DVD in the US either?)

As for if Funi didn't release DVDs... The show probably would have faded into obscurity in the west long ago and as SSJ Helldog said, there'd probably be a fansub group working on it.

If they never released the DVDs, I'd probably still just watch VHS tapes that I used for the series. That's right, I taped a lot the entire series. I had the old Ocean dub, and then every episode until the Cell Games. I missed out on the Cell Games and taped the Great Saiyaman Saga (including the Other World Martial Arts Tournament). I remember it having just come on Toonami when September 11 happened. Wow. So long ago.

Anyway, I would've probably recorded the entire series. The only reason I didn't bother to with the Cell Games (that had reruns later), GT, or Ultimate Uncut (big mistake) was because I pretty much knew I wanted to buy the series on DVD.

One- I'd have a -lot- more money.

Two- If the series was just released on VHS instead of DVD, I'd have even less money than I have now and my shelves would entirely consist of those horrible VHS releases they did.

Three- If this question actually meant 'what if the show was never commercially released outside Japan', then I'd cling a lot closer to my tapes cut off Toonami from back in the day. I'd probably be less of a fan though, because getting to the original version made me much more attached to it after a point.

Nelvana, through their liscencing agreements with FUNi, probably would have DVDed their dubs for them. Though it would probably be JUST the dub track.

Does Nelvana do dvds? Only series of their own I've seen on dvd were a few Care Bear dvds and Beyblade. Know Beetlejuice might have some things with Warner, but Tintin isn't on dvd either.

Would be just like Portugal, where the only way to watch the series is watching cable channel with terrible visual quality and a laughable dub.

I'd be standing on a street corner holding a sign that said "Will code php for food" following the dot-com crash, eventually landing a job as a stock clerk at the local Costco, where a pallet of 64-oz ketchup bottles would have fallen on me under suspicuous cirmcumstances, and I would have died a broken, angry man.

Also, I never would have been miscredited as having translated "Gunslinger Girl."
