Which DBZ movie do you think was the best out of all 13?
I can't decide between movies 3 or 8, but to you, which one was the greatest?

Ugh, movie 8? You must be kidding. Brolly is the lamest villain ever. Wasn't a big fan of 3, either, though it wasn't awful.
My favorite movie was Movie 9, "Ginga Giri-Giri!! Butchigiri no Sugoi Yatsu", for several reasons:
1) It comfortably fits into canon
2) Tournament fun
3) Battle stages were fun
4) Future Trunks gets to do things
5) Mr. Satan
6) Goku defies death... literally!
7) Kikuchi at his best
8) Master Roshi's scouter-vision
9) Everything that Gohan is or does in this movie
9 reasons. 9th movie.

Movie 5 was probably the first one I had ever seen, English or Japanese. So yeah, that's my favorite.

I have always loved DBZ Movie #12, DragonBall Z: Fukkatsu no Fusion!! Gokū to Vegeta. It's a super-fun watch and features my favorite, if somewhat non-canonical, villain in all of DragonBall.
So, to follow in penguintruth's footsteps, here are my:
Top 12 Reasons Why I Love Movie 12
12) Uber-crazy, can-you-spot-them-all villain cameos
11) Shenlong's terrific line at the end of the movie
10) Goten and Trunks fighting Nazis
09) Mr. Satan kicking zombie butt
08) Gohan decimating Freeza with a single punch to the gut
07) Paikuhan gets some more much-deserved screen time
06) Veku farting in Janemba's face
05) Vegeta cries...again!
04) The first, and totally badass, appearance of Gogeta
03) JANEMBA!!
02) JANEMBA!!
01) JANEMBA!!

I can't rank a movie above the others (though I automatically wanna say Movie 12 if only because I like watching Goku and Vegeta go back and forth with each other. This is also why I'm such a big fan of "Ossu!") because I like them all for different reasons, so I'll state those reasons in order in which the movies came out:
Movie 1) The style of fighting in this movie is the type I like the most. X3 Hand-to-hand combat beats ki-beam struggles for me anyday.
Movie 2) Had some nice creativity in there. I liked the fact that the evil plan was to steal the strongest guy's body and do a brain-swap. XD Could've gotten creepy, but avoided it (I can't imagine how they'd strap Goku down to even accomplish that type of operation to begin with or how his body'd survive it.) Also, we get so few cold-weather battles so that was a plus. Oh, and I think this was also the one where Piccolo almost had his mind controlled (or did? It's been a while.) and that was interesting.
Movie 3) I liked the plotline, and space pirates are fun. :3 Also, Turles as a "what-if" for an evil Goku was neat, though I think an actual evil Goku would have a different personality than the one he portrayed. (Turles seemed like he wanted power; an evil Goku, I think, would be someone who would be seeking an ultimate challenge instead.)
Movie 4) This one had a battle inside a city, or near a carnival, didn't it? Also I think Chi-Chi got some battlefield time in this one.
Movie 5) I can barely remember a thing about this one. I recall Goku giving this little bird some energy so it could safely fly away, and I'm aware that this Cooler movie had the not!blonde ssj in it.
Movie 6) Starts a pattern of Vegeta appearing flashily. The scene at the end where he and Goku were all tied up in the wires was creepy; and I'm almost certain they had some amusing banter between them. Oh! And hey, wasn't Yajirobe in this one?
Movie 7) I don't know whether to give or take away points for its hilariously inaccurate portrayal of what goes on inside a mall. I liked how Chi-Chi had Goku carrying all those bags though. XD I think this is also the one where Vegeta snaps at the jinzoningen not to attack Goku because Goku is his--Vegeta's--"prey". That phrasing he used amused me. Oh, and this one had the painful-looking punch-in-the-balls didn't it? >_O
Movie 8 ) My preferred Brolli movie; also the first subbed dbz movie I ever saw. I wish all the dbz movies clocked in at over an hour long. I liked the plotline and backstory, highlights include Goku being dragged to the PTA meeting and then disappearing into thin-air right in the middle of the interview, the fact that he was wearing the gi underneath the suit the whole time, Kuririn's karaoke, Brolli hiding his powers under Vegeta's nose for so long, "the glare" between Goku and Brolli, Vegeta flipping out and having to have Piccolo drag him back onto the battlefield by his hair, and just the final battle in general.
Movie 9) The way the tournament was set up; the settings used, Mark's attempted daring escape XD , people slipping on Kuririn's head, the hot springs as a prize, Goku and Bubbles playing cards, Vegeta's depression illustrated by him laying in bed and watching tv, actually getting to see what his room looks like and being surprised at how small his bed is, more space pirates, Vegeta arriving to give Trunks his sword, Goku using shunkan idou at the very end despite being dead. X3
Movie 10) This is where my memory gets fuzzy again. I liked Goten pretending to cry in order to get Videl to get him some food, Kuririn-dressed-as-Piccolo was fun, watching Trunks and Goten fight Brolli was interesting, where was Vegeta during all this?
Movie 11) Juuhachigou getting Mark to increase the amount of money he was to pay her multiple times over the course of the movie. Oh, and it was nice to give Kuririn some more screen time.
Movie 12) Fun stuff: Goku and Pikuhan's madcap adventures in the beginning, first form Janemba, giant jelly beans, pretty much all of Goku and Vegeta's interaction, the awkward rump-tap, second form Janemba's cube-teleporting skill, Gohan vs Freeza, Gogeta's shiny multi-colored ki ball. I really want another adventure-story like this, only one that takes place around the time of "Ossu!", as its melancholy, mess-with-Vegeta's-mind-for-fun Goku fascinates me. :3
Movie 13) Saiyaman 1 and 2 in action, Goku in the zoo, the song Tapion plays, Vegeta's brief attempt to fight only to get flung into an office building, and the concept of giant Godzilla-esque monster vs the gang.

My absolute favorite is Cooler Returns. It was the first DBZ movie I ever watched waaaay back when it was first released at my buddies house. It was the first time I had been exposed to anything Dragon Ball and it was a good place to start. Lots of action, lots of humor, lots of baddassery, and a few twists that I didn't expect (it was my first time watching DBZ, afterall). But that's not the reason it's my favorite. I genuinely like the movie.
Bojack and Android 13 tie for second. And then Movie 12 for 3rd. And finally the second Broly movie comes in last. I don't care much for the first three movies. The rest of 'em are fine; I could take them or leave them.

I absolutely love Movie 8, and I can't believe someone actually got criticized for picking that one. Let alone picking Movie 9 over it, oh well.
The story of Movie 8 was very thought out and interesting. Brolly was very much a unique villain. He was very scary, freakishly strong villain. This is what kept me on the edge of my seat when I first watched this in Japanese. They used flash backs to explain the villain and gave the character more development. Let's face he was even more insane than Freeza was.
Well, I wish I could explain why I liked this movie more. But I'm not that great in explaining things. I just do. I'm baffled someone got criticized over it though. Oh well, not a big deal. I just thought the plot was really thought out, and the villain really creeped me out. I mean the scene were he destroyed that planet right in front of those little dudes. And some of Brolly's lines were really cool. I think he says the line "I'm a devil" or something like that.
And as for Movie 9(It sucked), I mean um, come on the plot? Oh sure, Bojack was living in King Kai's planet? What kind of lame plot is that? Why was Gohan waiting so long to turn SS2? He should have just done it from the beginning.
I would say I also like Movie 1 and Movie 3. What I liked about Movie 3 was the Tree of Might. I thought that was a great idea for a plot. You would never think of that. You would never imagine planting a seed , then a tree just eating up all the nutrients and destroying all the living inhabitants of earth. It has me wondering, where did Toei get this idea from? Did they steal it from someone? Yeah, it is that good. It was very original.
I don't know, I'm just fascinated with trees.
Movie 1 also, I liked the music and the one on one hand combats with Goku. I liked how he used his power pole and his kamehameha. It was just really cool. I like the pioneer dub too. That's what makes it cool for me.
Other then that, I don't really like most of the other movies.
I like 8,1,3, maybe 12. The rest of them, I just kind of hate. I like DBZ episodes way better.

Oh Really? Wow, that's awesome. He gets to do things in movie 9? I'm sorry but that doesn't make a great movie. Because someone gets to do things. I can't help not to laugh at that line. Oh well. I mean he could sleep all throughout the movie and that is doing something. But that doesn't necessarily make it entertaining.4) Future Trunks gets to do things

SSVegetto, Brolly was nothing but a big, lumbering brute who screamed a lot. He didn't even have a motivation. "Duhr huhr, Kakkarot cried a lot, so I went insane." That's the lamest back story. And it only serves to further confuse the Legendary Super Saiyan issue.
The whole movie was just the characters getting their asses handed to them, then somebody new shows up, they have a glimmer of hope, and then get their asses handed to them again.
And Vegeta was uncharacteristically wussy during most of the movie. The way he was acting, you'd have thought Brolly was stronger than Perfect Cell. Since when does Vegeta get this rattled? He's always extremely cocky and thinks he can beat his opponent, no matter how much stronger than they appear. I know it's supposed to give credibility to Brolly, but really.
The movie was way too long for something that was just the same thing over and over. And with every appearance, Brolly got more pathetic as a character.
Movie 9, on the other hand, is a confirmation as Gohan's role as the protector of Earth. Granted, Bojack wasn't nearly as developed as a good villain should be, but let's face it, no DBZ movie villain is. His henchmen were fun, the battles were excellent and varied, and the final showdown was one of the best scenes in the franchise.
And who says Gohan could have gone SSJ2 right away? He hasn't done it since Cell. He hasn't trained with it like he did with the first form.
And by "Trunks does things", I mean he's actually somewhat useful for once, and his fight was great.
Movies 8, 10, and 11 were my least favorite. Movie 4 was awful, too. I liked the Coola movies. Movies 2 and 3 are good for nostalgic reasons, but otherwise, not that great. How the hell did Dr. Wheelo's brain grow to that size? What, is he Mamo from that first Lupin III movie? Movie 1 is great. Movie 7 is okay. Movies 12 and 13 are pretty good, too.

I'm gonna have to agree with you there. Very basic "Goku fights strong guys in cool ways. His friends do cool stuff, too. Oh, and Goku fights Piccolo again" kind of story. Oh, and Gohan has some great moments (including his musical dream sequence) in the film, too.Raki wrote:I liked Dragonball Z Movie 2. It clicked for some reason.
Movie 1 comes in a close second for me for a lot of the same reasons, but I think Movie 2 does everything better except for Gohan's drunkenness and Piccolo's entrance to get revenge in Movie 1.
Oh? Really? What was your Bojack doing in the core of King Kai's planet? Was he eating dirt and soil just to survive? Yeah, that is a cool back story. Yeah, you are right. Bojack is definitely more cooler. *Me rolls eyes.penguintruth wrote:SSVegetto, Brolly was nothing but a big, lumbering retard who screamed a lot. He didn't even have a motivation. Yeah, that damn Brolly him being pure evil, creepy, insane, and practically invincible makes him a retard? He was pure evil dude. He destroyed galaxies for no apparent reasons. That is what his character was dude. That doesn't make him a retard. That makes him kind of like Kid Buu actually.
Exactly, that was the point. They were going up with an insane warrior. Which made me feel excited. Brolly made me feel like he really was a crazy ass devil with no rhyme or reason, just an insane killing machine. He is a very cool character.penguintruth wrote:The whole movie was just the characters getting their asses handed to them, then somebody new shows up, they have a glimmer of hope, and then get their asses handed to them again.
That actually made me laugh. I found that really funny in the movie. Where Piccolo picks him up by his hair. Well, Freeza compared to Brolly, who wouldn't be scared? Vegeta was aware of what Brolly's real strength was. Even though Vegeta knew he couldn't win, he decided to fight after all.penguintruth wrote:And Vegeta was uncharacteristically wussy. Vegeta doesn't care what power his opponent has, he's never afraid (or rarely shows it). He's almost stupidly confident, like Goku, but because of his ego. The only time he showed any fear is before Freeza, but then got extremely cocky once actually faced with him. He's practically blubbering like a little crybaby throughout movie 8. It's pathetic.
When Goku first went Super Saiyan 1, he could do it anytime he wanted. It was like riding a bicycle. And so should Gohan when he went Super Saiyan 2. They just did it to drag the movie out. They did that in another movie also. Movie 5. Where Goku already beat Freeza, but he waits until the end to go Super Saiyan to defeat Coola even though he already knew how to go Super Saiyan. It doesn't make sense. So I don't like movies that do that.penguintruth wrote:And who says Gohan could have gone SSJ2 right away? He hasn't done it since Cell. Hell, I hate Movie 10 for that also. Someone told me Gohan didn't even go Super Saiyan 2 against Brolly? I found that hard to believe. I thought he was. Like I said I hate most of the movies.
And if Bojack was so great, in movie 12. Can you explain to me why when all the dead characters come back to life on earth. And when Bojack, Freeza, and the gang come up. Why is that Freeza is the one that gives the order to attack. I thought it should be Bojack? Since Bojack is suppose to be stronger than Freeza. I guess Bojack wasn't bad ass enough.

Yes, now I remember. I like movie 2 as well.
So my list is 8,3,1,2,12. That is about it.

True, Bojack wasn't a great villain. The make up of the movie was good enough to compensate for that. The tournament and its battle stages. The humor of Mr. Satan. Gohan being the hero. That great scene of him repeating what his father told him.
Brolly isn't a great villain either, though. He's just an insane muscle-bound imbecile. He's not like Freeza, who has some nuance to his cruelty, some charm. Brolly is just "GRARRARAAGGHH, BROLLY SMASH!" He's a bulldozer. I like a villain with a little more finesse, and even Bojack had more with his cockiness and willingness to sacrifice his subordinates. His back story was a little wonky, but he had more personality than Brolly.
Shit, Appule has more personality than Brolly. Farmer with the Shotgun is more developed than Brolly.
And movie 8 doesn't compensate at all for it. It's just a lot of being bulldozed over and over again. Like movie 1, only Garlic Junior had an actual personality and only bulldozed the characters once.
And Goku is a different case than Gohan. Obviously Gohan needed to get as angry as he did in the Cell Games to return to that form. It made sense in the context of the movie, which is all that mattered.

Kentai wrote:Son Gokuu is a fascinating character anyway, because he is - at face value, anyway - an idiot savant. The victim of violent head trauma as an infant [...] he's a simple bumpkin with a fair share of brain damage who's natural talents to work out what's wrong compensate for his broad lack of common sense. But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.
Dragon Ball (Z) Kai Reviews!
Can I get a Schemen?
My favorite is Movie 1 Dead Zone. It is set up as if it comes between DB and Z. They mention Goku beating Piccolo at the last tournament. The rivalry between the two is still strong, and the fight scenes are fantastic. The overall feel of the movie was a lot grittier and darker than some of the later movies. Although I don't care for Garlic Junior's return later in the series, he works as a villian in this movie, and is the only one to ever gain the wish for imortality.
Movies 5,9,and 13 are also favorites, but Movie 1 is the one I like the most out of all of them.
I liked DB Movie 2, Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle, for many of the same reasons. It and Dead Zone are probably my two favorite Dragonball/Z movies overall.

I really like movie 3. I have nostalgic memories of being off school and watching it in Japanese for the first time. I like that other characters are in it. Tenshinhan, Yamucha, Kuririn and Chaozu all get there time on screen to do their signature moves. The ending where Goku kills Tullece with a Genki Dama is a bit generic but I think everything else in the movie more than makes up for that. I also really liked the art style that was used and the music in it was great.
I also like movies 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12 and 13.

1) It comfortably fits into canon
2) Tournament fun
3) Battle stages were fun
4) Future Trunks gets to do things
5) Mr. Satan
6) Goku defies death... literally!
7) Kikuchi at his best
8) Master Roshi's scouter-vision
9) Everything that Gohan is or does in this movie
9 reasons. 9th movie.

My favorite movie- no, my favorite part of the entire series has always been movie 1, Dead Zone.
It's my favorite art style of the series, it's my favorite point in time with the gap between DB and DBZ, it's my favorite characters, Son actually cares about his family, Kami is a badass, the backstory with the battle for the Godship is fascinating, the music is amazing, I can actually enjoy it equally in Japanese and in English, the fights are beautifully choreographed and awesome to watch, some of my favorite Piccolo lines ever (Then you'll know what hell is really like) and my god, I love Dead Zone. My only real complaint is that the actual fight between Pic and Son is too short <_<
Oh, and as for movie 8. There's nothing that much worst about it compared to most of the movies- hell, it actually has a plot beyond "dude shows up we fight!" I've always been impressed by that about it. As for development of the villain, eh... how much do most of the other movie villains have. Movie 8 gets a lot of flack because subsequently Brolli gets completely blown out of proportion, but that's the fault of what came later not so much 8 itself. And actually, Veggie completely melting down and squeaking on the ground till Pic plucks him up by his hair and completely verbally owns him is one of my favorite moments in all of the movies ever, so I'll never hold that against it
And another note to whoever was teasing about Mirai Trunks being in a movie as a stupid reason to like it- no it's not o_O If your favorite character was suppose to have disappeared and then you get to see them doing cool stuff again, that's a perfectly legitimate reason to like a movie.
