Ocean dub vs Funi Dub

Sabat only did 35+ voices because FUNimation only had...twelve people. Nowadays (or for a hopeful new dub), Sabat would probably be cast in all of one or two roles.

The Ocean isn't much better. Scott McNeil and Terry Klassen both wound up playing a dozen characters in the end.

That's true. And Brian Drummond played both Vegeta and Yajirobe, if I remember right.

I just felt like it was more obvious with Sabat. In my opinion, if he had concentrated on Vegeta from the beginning, he might've been a lot better, instead of improving so slowly. But as you've said, they didn't really have that many people.

But then that begs the question, why did they bother doing it in house if they had even less folks than Ocean did?

Let's not forget Drummond also voiced Paikuhan and Yamu, it painfully obviously him.

Lookin' back ten years, FUNimation did the right choice. They've done far greater good since their dub of Dragon Ball, so making the move in-house was worth it.

Eh, I don't know. At least it paved the way for some of their better work, though.

Eh, FUNimations in house dub has much fewer inaccuracies and stupid jokes (Yes, yes, outside of Season Three and most of Four...I'm not saying there aren't any at all)

FUNimation's is still inaccurate, but they can mention death, and it is more accurate... It is also completely uncut, whereas the Ocean dub cut out whole episodes. That, and now you can watch it with the Japanese music!

Well I would go as far as to say there are stupid joke throughout the entire dub even though the script does get somewhat better. I could name plenty of cringe worthy one liners in the Cell and Buu arcs.

Are you just referring to the difference of what the dub had him say when he died or is there more stuff they changed about his back story?

You mean Vegeta's sob story to Goku as he's dying on Namek? The one that was completely uncharacteristic for an unrepentant Vegeta, who went right back to being a douche when wished back? The one that was originally just Vegeta begging him to become cold-hearted and avenge the Saiyans?

Arguably one of the dub's worst moments. Especially when Goku then forgives him.

Yeah his death speech being changed to something completely different was kind of a huge deal. That and they have him constantly talking about "Saiyan pride" which is inaccurate to the history of the Saiyans. They were ruthless low lives and would do absolutely anything to win, there was no pride or honor for that race.

Not to mention they kind of missed the entire point of that scene. Goku finally admits that he was a Saiyajin raised on Earth. I remember him spouting that line in the Buttah/Jheese fight in the dub. Talk about jumping the gun. At that point he was still supposed to be shunning his heritage.

... I have GOT to watch the entire anime in Japanese soon. It was always easier to watch it on Toonami. I thought that speech was bogus, but I never read up on the dub changes after the changeover from the Ocean cast. Anything else -significant- I might have missed?

Throw in Karin, and that's sort of where the boggling stops. Everyone else is kind of obvious.

Although, you could make the argument(and I have made this argument) that Vegeta, Yamcha, and Piccolo are the only characters of any real importance he's done, and that everyone else is either a oneshot cronie or a minor character with three or four appearances in the enitre story.

What confuzzles me is that it seems people don't like the idea of one person doing multiple roles, regardless of talent. Which to that, I must say, doesn't make a lot of sense.

I don't care for the dub but even I have nothing against Chris Sabat's modern performances for the characters. (Less me stress modern, as in like Budokai 2 onwards.)

He is an exceptional actor and I really like him. While not the best suited voices in my eyes they aren't awful by a long shot. However if we're talking Freeza arc to early Buu arc...that's a different story.

Though will say this topic reminded me of seeing comparison video of 2 English Kenshin dubs. One was of what we got here by Media Blasters/Anime Works, and another aired in foreign countries but is streaming in the States now. The one that aired in foreign countries isn't that great. Voices are strange, got weird name changes, including calling Kenshin, Battusai the Slasher. Media Blasters is much better.

i think you are referring to the "Samurai X" version, wich could be referred as international english dub, wich usually is pretty poor in translation and scrpt accuaricy, weird voices, and sometimes is made in asia, and made exclusively for foreign countries, kinda like the old dubs of the old transformers animes (Headmasters, Supergod Masterforce, Victory), or the Toho international english dubs of the godzilla movies always made in hong kong, by asian actors, i guess (not to be confused with the AIP, UPA, and Titra US dubs of this movies aswell)

i can tell you this since here in mexico we got an spanish dub of Ruroni Kenshin with the name of Samurai X, and the voice acting was pretty bad, Kaoru and some of the girls sounded like girly men, and we got the term "Batosai el destazador", for example

I've always been able to generally point out when it's him and he does a lot of voices that are stressful on the vocals. I like him in many of his non-Dragonball roles and would like to see him playing less Dragonball characters so he can focus all of his talent on one character and possibly let more of his natural voice slip in so that he'll have a wider range of emotion and volume to use in his lines.

Plus, many of his Dragonball voices are very easy to imitate. Natural voices are little bit different unless you have a really funny natural voice. Adding a level of natural voice to one well-done Dragonball character would add some needed depth.

Sabat's done some amazing stuff for a guy who didn't major in acting in any school, but it's best when he plays but one or two roles in a series (like YYH, his Raizen was beastly, and his Roronoa Zoro is quickly becoming his best role ever). It saves the guy the range he'll need to tap into for different lines, and it'll save his voice too. His Vegeta, Piccolo, and Yamcha are constantly changing or mixing nowadays and that probably because his Vegeta (and original Piccolo) would shred any man's vocal chords.

Which is why he's just dropping his natural voice a little for his speaking voice nowadays.

And I hope that it continues in that direction. I'll always prefer the Canadian cast and the Japanese cast, but I can't deny that Sabat's continually getting better.
