What if Funimation did a faithful redub of Z?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

What if Funimation did a faithful redub of Z?

Post by Ultimate_DB_Fan » Mon Oct 05, 2009 11:45 pm

This thought popped into my head recently and I wanted to see what your opinions would be.
Basically, if Funimation, out of the blue, decided that they would finally dub the series with scripts very, VERY faithful to the original material, WHILE still distributing the DragonBoxes, would you scrap the intention of getting said DragonBoxes in favor for the new, faithful redub, would you still get the DragonBoxes, or maybe say, "Screw it" and get everything?
Keep in mind that the new redub would have the current cast, which consists of Sabat and the rest, the video quality would be the same as that of the DragonBoxes, and, finally, Sean Schemmel would correct his previous mistake of mispronouncing KaioKen and saying it the way it's really supposed to be said.

I'd definately give them kudos for finally doing a faithful dub.

But as I can't stand their current cast, I would never listen to it or delay my Dragonbox purchase.

I'd rush out and buy it, but if I had to drive through Hell to get to the store, I'd make sure to wear a coat.

They would have to completely overhaul it. Almost entirely new cast, new script, everything.

They'll probably do a faithful dub when they get Kai.

Why would they release them separately if it's the same footage?

I've been watching some of Funi's newer dubbed shows on their YouTube channel and their TV channel, and there's some really good stuff there.

Granted, I no longer pay attention the actual names of the newer VA's, but whoever they are they're really good.

So yeah, complete recasting and a more accurate dub; I'd give it a watch.

I'd like to keep adult Trunks' VA around though, I'm currently watching a series where he's one of the main characters and he's become really amazing. X3

Yeah, FUNimation's got a huge talent pool these days, many of them stage performers, so their dubs tend to be of much higher quality. Their current 'big name actors' amongst dub fans are Vic Mignoga, Colleen Clinkenbeard, Brina Palencia, Travis Willingham, and Todd Haberkorn amongst many others. Then there's the veterans who have improved greatly (Sabat, Sonny Strait, Mike McFarland).

Assuming the cast doesn't have their feelings hurt over the recasting, I'd love to see it for sure. Bill Jenkins for Narrator and Lord Kaiô!!

It's really not necessary and far too late. I hope when they get to Kai they do something different. A new cast would be nice but we know FUNimation, all their damn dubs have the same freakin' actors. It's really annoying and tiresome.

I'd probably give it a look if nothing else, but I'm likely to just keep watching the original version of the show. I'd be much more excited if the original voice acting were to be remastered in higher quality somehow... and I mean remastered--not re-recorded like Kai is doing.

They should cast a woman as Goku, Gohan, and Goten, to see how it goes. If it doesn't work out, it'll at least be better than Schemmel's. Brina Palencia!

I'm for keeping Sabat as Vegeta, since he's improved, but only as Vegeta. Everyone else he plays has to be recast. Travis Willingham might make a decent Piccolo.

Brice Armstrong would make a good Kaio, he has the deep voice Kaio has in the Japanese version and sounds very authoritative in his roles.

John Burgmeier would make a good Freeza. And John Swasey a good Cell. Chuck Huber and Meredith McCoy can reprise their roles as Androids 17 and 18, but 16 needs a new VA.

Avery Rice Williams as Chaozu. Aaron Dismuke as Future Trunks.

You can tell I've been actually thinking about how I would recast DBZ's dub. I'm even thinking about doing an article about it for my blog.

But, really, I've pretty much given up any real hope of DBZ having a good English dub. The Japanese cast is awesome, anyway, so to me, there's not a whole heap of need for a new one, except that the script is terrible in the current one.

Even if they just change the script so it's closer to the original, but keep the current cast, at least I can say that it's an actual DBZ dub, and not some entirely different show like it is in most of the dub.

Ha ha...probably not. Accurate scripts would be nice, but that still doesn't change the fact that I really don't like some of the English VAs. It's just easier to ignore the English version, and watch the Japanese version where I don't even have to think about nitpicking over anything...which is what the Dragon Boxes will provide me with.

Implementing new things into Kai like a recast would be nice, but I still don't believe Funimation would put THAT much effort into things , when it's (probably) only a small minority of the overall fanbase who would actually request a recast of the current cast if we were ever given that decision.

(We just seem to gather in droves around here?)

A faithful re-dub would be nice if they choose to dub DBkai to the US soon.

... It took me way too long to get this. I was thinking it was a #17 reference.

I think the general apathy among those that cared in the day, and the outrage from the dubbies would make it a pretty pointless move on FUNi's part. I'd probably be interested, but eh.
... Masako X as Goku and maybe Gohan might be enough to get me to buy such a product. :) :D :) :D 8)

Question for those how experienced it: Do you remember how you felt when they switched from the Ocean cast to FUNimation's in-house cast?

The voice actors will propably be a thing the dubbies will be concerned if they changed them to an all new ones.

I would personally relish the irony of anyone who dared to bitch about an accurate redub, claiming "they changed everything!!!" When in actuality, they fixed it.

The voices are tolerable for the most part, couldn't care less about that beaten-horse aspect. I'm just sick and tired of dub bullshit getting in the way of in-universe series discussion.

Honestly, a full re-cast would be in order. Full, as in entire. Barely anyone would be left unchanged, considering the far expanded roster of actors they have to pick from as well as the many actors who have moved.

Son Family:
Young Goku - Brina Palencia
Older Goku - Todd Haberkorn
Young Gohan - Brina Palencia/Maxey Whitehead
Older Gohan - Micah Solusod
Young Goten - Brina Palencia/Cherami Leigh
Chi-Chi - Monica Rial

Humans:
Bulma - Laura Bailey/Colleen Clinkenbeard
Tenshinhan - John Burgmeir
Yamcha - Jerry Jewel
Chaotzu - Monika Antonelli
Young Krillin - Cynthia Cranz
Krillin - Chris Cason/Greg Ayres

Otherworld:
King Kai - Brice Armstrong

Saiyans:
Vegeta - John Gremillion/Travis Willingham/J. Michael Tatum/Troy Baker/Chris Patton
Nappa - George Manley
Raditz - Patrick Seitz

Piccolo - Travis Willingham/John Gremillion/Chris Sabat (With a new voice)

Freeza and his gang:
Freeza - Vic Mignogna/J.Michael Tatum/Chuck Huber
Zarbon - Eric Vale
Dadoria - Chris Forbis

Ginyu Force:
Ginyu - Sean Hennigen
Recoome - Bryan Massey
Jeice - Chris Patton
Burter - Vic Migogna/Sonny Strait
Guldo - Bill Townsley

Cell Arc:
Trunks - Jason Leibrecht
Android 16 - Rob Mungle
Android 17 - Robert McCollum
Android 18 - Trina Nishimura
Cell - Travis Willingham/Bob Carter/J. Michael Tatum

I could come up with more, but it's past late.

I would also expect them to stick much closer to the script, possibly as close if not closer than Dragon Ball.

Probably never happen, though, as nice as it really would be to have a proper dub of the show.

(Oh, and personal opinion here, keep Sabat far, far away from Vegeta.)

Oooh I can picture it in my head: "What? Battle Power over 8000?! I hate this dub because they made Goku weaker than the old one when his Power Level was OVER NINE THOUSAND!"

And: "What?! That's not how Freeza sounds like! He is supposed to sound like a reptile and not a British Gentleman!!"
