Difference between Viz Big and normal volume releases of DB

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Difference between Viz Big and normal volume releases of DB

Post by Lazyking » Fri Oct 02, 2009 6:33 pm

I'm thinking of getting into the manga and want to know what the differences between Viz Big and normal releases are. Is Viz Big just bigger volumes or is it censored differently? Any help is appreciated.

The censorship in the VizBigs is, if I understand correctly, as close to uncensored as any other edition has been.

Otherwise, it's printed bigger, on better quality paper, a lot of it's in color, and the price per volume is great compared to the individual releases.

This, except that it's on par with the most censored printings. Not a big deal though - it really only affects a handful of panels (Popo notwithstanding).

From what we checked, VizBigs are actually censored slightly more than the most uncensored versions of the normal releases. The problem with the normal releases is you never know what you're getting, unless you look inside and know what to check for in each volume. VizBigs are consistent, not overly censored and have some of the color pages, so they're not a bad way to go.

They also include the fan-letter pages as well, which the single volumes don't. At least the ones I bought didn't have them.

Some of the single volumes have them. I forget which. I'm not sure if it's all of them crammed into those few volumes or just some select ones though (since I don't remember there being many pages of it in each one).

Just checked all of mine. Only volumes 2 and 12 have them, at the back. Like I said, I don't know how many of the total amount of questions/answers that covers. I somewhat doubt it's all of them.

Nothing in mine. Just a bunch of ads for other Viz publications.

That's strange. I wonder if it's another one of those random things that differs between the different editions.

Actually, looking at my old copies (the old white covered ones, before the smaller editions with the red DB and white DBZ ones came out) there's a questions/answers thing at the end of 2-6 as well. Much shorter than the ones in 2 and 12 of my newer copies though.

The censorship in the Vizbigs stands in the middle. Its not as uncensored as the most uncensored editions and its not as censored as the most censored ones.

Besides that it has better paper quality, bigger frame, and half of the color pages available. It also has the "ask me anything corner" in the DB ones.

I wrote a review about the DB ones in this forum not long ago. Search for it.

Just a heads-up:

Amazon has DragonBall VizBig Vol. 1 NEW for $7.20 right now.

This is definitely the time to buy.
