What if Funimation did a faithful redub of Z?

I didn't notice. Probably 'cause I stopped watching DBZ for a year because I was tired of reruns. It's been so long since DBZ's been on TV, though, that I don't know if the majority of the viewers will notice or care. With the popularity of DBZ Abridged, and since it's been so long, I think there would be a lot of new viewers. Also, I think MasakoX as Gokuh would definitely make most fans happier about a recasting. I think EVERYONE is used to hearing his voice for Gokuh.SHINOBI-03 wrote:Question for those how experienced it: Do you remember how you felt when they switched from the Ocean cast to FUNimation's in-house cast?
The voice actors will propably be a thing the dubbies will be concerned if they changed them to an all new ones.

I'd love a faithful re-dub. The closest thing we got to one were Pioneer movies #1-3 -- quality acting by the Ocean cast, Japanese BGM intact, uncut, and good scripts. If FUNimation could apply these same fundamentals to the series, i'd thoroughly enjoy it. If Ocean's cast was onboard, that'd be even sweeter (although that would never happen).

Is the Dragon Box getting anything resembling a redub at all? I guess DBox 1 doesn't really need it, but the Ginyu stuff was seriously bad when you heard a better dub of Captain Ginyu, Vegeta, Gohan, and Krillin alongside Jeice, Burter, and (worst of all) Goku's original 1999 dub.
I think that at this point, the only thing Funimation would really have to redub would be Ginyu/Freeza and certain parts of the Androids stuff (unless, of course, they wanted to actually refer to them as Artificial Humans, which would require a HUGE overhall of Trunks through Cell). Generally speaking, the dub from Cell onward from the Season Sets was pretty good.
One little thing that really bothered me about the dub on the Season Sets was at the beginning of the second half of "Final Atonement" where they added narration over the scenes of Goku and Gohan laying passed out on the ground when originally there was none. That has to be removed.

Goku's many English voices! The last one, the Malaysian one, is horrible! You get to hear a bit of Vegeta too! Not only are the voices horrible but so is the English! The 2nd worst one I think was mentioned as an unknown UK voice and was really deep and did not fit Goku at all!

Funimation has yet to mention anything about the dub being improved any. I think the WHOLE SHOW needs to be re-dubbed, though; not just the parts with shitty acting. They at LEAST need to get the script right. Maybe on an eventual later release?

FUNimation's stupid when it comes to DB, but they're not THAT stupid. They would never recast this series. I practically threw a shit fit when Bill Townsley played Babidi in Sparking Meteor. Could you imagine the cast that people have known for for 10 years now being replaced? No friggin way.
Here's exactly why a recast will NEVER happen:
If they were to recast the series it would be to please fans of the Japanese Version. But at this point in time, none of the JP Fans will suddenly switch their preference to the Dub just because there's a new cast. So the people they're trying to please still wouldn't care in the end.
The bottom line is, regardless of whether people like it or not. English Freeza sounds like a lizard.
But anyway, as for a Re-Dub. I doubt Z will ever get one. Waaaaay too expensive. We are talking about a 291 Episode series after all. I'd say the best shot for an accurate script would be Kai.

They replaced the Ocean cast dub and nobody burned their studios down, I don't see why they can't do a new dub again. DBZ will always make them money, you can't say they can't afford it.
I, for one, would like to finally hear a dub track that is at least tolerable. It doesn't even need to be amazing, just a tolerable adaptation of the original script, at the very least.
Anyway, it's not likely they'll bother doing it again, since they've done it over and over again, but with Kai there's some hope, at least.

This has been my opinion from the start. I've always liked how they handled the Cell Games and Boo arcs. (Although for some weird reason the end of the Boo arc's dub script really strays away from the Japanese one.) If they just kind of stuck with writing like that I'd be a fairly happy camper.penguintruth wrote:

To be perfectly honest I can forgive everything but the character changing dialogue, if it didn't have that I could probably deal.

Aro started to laugh. “Ha, ha, ha,” he chuckled.- Actual quote from Twilight
At this point, no, I wouldn't exactly "switch my preference" and favor the English version. But if it got a really good dub with some recast appropriate voices, a better script, the original music, and all that jazz... well, in in the vein of FUNi's One Piece dub, I'd probably come to enjoy it just as much as the original. I'm positive a lot of other people feel the same way.Gozar wrote:But at this point in time, none of the JP Fans will suddenly switch their preference to the Dub just because there's a new cast. Y'know what? I'm not even really concerned about the rest of the cast. Even if they only recast Freeza, I'd be ecstatic. I can only hope they wise up and do some recasting for Kai.The bottom line is, regardless of whether people like it or not. English Freeza sounds like a lizard.

Dragon Ball Z was already very popular before the in house Funimation studio took over.Gozar wrote:A cast of 2 years being replaced in 1999 when DragonBall was just coming into it's popularity and a cast of 10 years being replaced after already cemented in their hearts are 2 polar opposites.penguintruth wrote:They replaced the Ocean cast dub and nobody burned their studios down

I would like to see them remove some of the pointless humor lines out like when Goku said "Sir Isaac Newton would've never live to tell about it if one of those hit him," and a few others that I can't remember at the moment.

It was more gaining popularity. Coming into it's self. The height of DB's American Fandom was the Cell Era.penguintruth wrote:Dragon Ball Z was already very popular before the in house Funimation studio took over.Gozar wrote:A cast of 2 years being replaced in 1999 when DragonBall was just coming into it's popularity and a cast of 10 years being replaced after already cemented in their hearts are 2 polar opposites.penguintruth wrote:They replaced the Ocean cast dub and nobody burned their studios down

Yeah I remember Dragon Ball Z being REALLY big in the Buu saga. I tuned in a couple of times just because of the hype but I was more interested in Dragon Ball. I knew all the characters names though just because of other kids and cousins.Gozar wrote:It was more gaining popularity. Coming into it's self. The height of DB's American Fandom was the Cell Era.

Funimation replaced a large portion of the Evangelion dub for the first Rebuild movie, and I didn't see a stink raised.
(Probably because like DBZ, the Evangelion dub has terrible voice performances.)

The in-house cast didn't affect the popularity. Airing it on Toonami did. And it aired the first two seasons twice, if I remember right.Innagadadavida wrote:Not quite.
