Intoducing Dragonball for the first time...

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Fri Feb 04, 2005 1:18 pm

Hello, one of my friends has been wanting to get into Dragonball for a while, He's asked me a few times to recomend a DVD for him to watch to get him started in the story...As we all know that can be tricky being there are a few starting points in the DB series, here are my suggestions....

Bardock TV Special - Because this is the root of Goku's beginings before episode 1 of DB.

Saga Of Goku - I have the PAL DVD playable on mine\his coumputer, this would set up the story of Dragonball as apose to setting up the fighters history that was in the Bardock TV Special.

Dragonball Z The Arrival - Sure its edited, but not as badly as people say, sure its craptacular and all that dub bashing stuff, but its the introduction to DBZ and once you get emotionally attatched to these people, you'd really wanna see them as children.

So, what do you people think would work for an introduction to DB?

Id say the Piccolo Jr. disks before "Arrival". That way he would know why Goku and Piccolo were rivals. Possibly the Nappa/Vegeta fight after "Arrival". Hell, just show him all of it.

Lol, I agree. After all, it is where the anime is supposed to start. You would want your friend to get to know Goku's future comrads from the start and not when they already are friends (don't forget that all of them started as enemies).

I agree as well, Dragon Ball Episode 1, going so early with the Bardock special would ruin the flow of the story and spoil Goku's mystery before its time. Go through it in order ^_^

Yeah.

While Bardock technically happens first chronologically, that kinda destroys the awesome-insanity of "Goku, you're an alien" after 153 episodes ^^;;.

Yeah... it also destroys the awesome-insanity of the fact that Son Gohan was Baba's 5th fighter... ^^;;

I don't remember at all how my fandom started, but I know it started with Dragonball. GO FOR EPPY 1! From the beginning's always best.

Watching the Bardock special then moving on to DB just seems weird, I mean DBZ just isn't DB. On another note, cute avatar Sujin! :)

I agree with everyone else when they say you should start with DB#1. I'd also suggest you reccomend the manga to him as it's very good.

With "Path to Power", I always found it funny how they changed Oolong's reason for getting expelled from Shapeshifting school to something worse than stealing underwear.

problem is thats not all of DB in one sitting, it leaves out quite a bit of story, and doesnt even touch on Pilaf, the tenkaichi Budokais (any of them) and the Piccolo stories. So I would disreccomend doing that.

DRAGONBALL EPISODE 1!

It's the way it was meant to be seen... and it's true, "Path to Power" skips Pilaf and doesn't touch on later sagas or tournaments, it even goes as far as slightly changing the Red Ribbon Saga. "Path to Power", I think, was mainly meant for nostalgic reasons!

You can't go wrong with episode one of DB. I wish I had started at episode one instead of episode one of DBZ. I wasn't shocked at all that Goku was being revealed as an alien nor was I shocked when Goku and Piccolo teamed up to fight Raditz. Now having seen the entire series, I can understand why I should've been surprised.

I wish I could've gone through all of DB before DBZ but eh back in 1995 and 1996 ther swuitchover came after the Pilaf saga, sure I WAS surprised, but I didnt have a flying clue who Piccolo was, or Krillin for that matter.

One day, I have set myself a goal to own all of DB and DBZ on DVD and run through it all in a marathon run lasting many days, insane sure, I just want the feel of it, gotta wait for the uncut season 1 and 2 sets to do it though.

What's the big deal about ep 1 of DB? It's where I started and I wasn't 00ber impressed. I enjoyed it and it convinced to buy the manga but...

The big deal is that it's THE first episode of Dragonball and where the whole nonsense started. It has nothing to do with how good it is or not.
