Seriously though, I predict this whole thing will blow over. Moral outrages always just sort of... peter out eventually. In fact, judging by the slow news week on the site, it seems fairly likely that this whole crusade is already out of steam.

Sorry to bring this topic back, but:

The Dragon Ball manga will be removed from all public schools in Wicomico County, Maryland. The Dragon Ball Z manga is also being reviewed to see if it should be banned or not. :(

I'm afraid it'll be worse... since Viz rated DBZ for All Ages instead of Teen

DBZ as a whole is suitable for All Ages in my opinion. The only volumes that it would be justifiable to rate Teen for are DBZ Volume 2, DBZ Volume 4 & DBZ Volume 5, because, as far as I know, they are the only volumes that include mild nudity (Gohan's nude moments post-Oozaru)--and even in those volumes, there is no depiction of genitalia. Aside from nudity, I don't think the violence can even be classed as "strong". At least, not "18/R-rated strong".

I agree with DB being rated Teen, because of the nudity. If it was rated All Ages, of course you'd get parents preaching. The fact of the matter is this: there are age ratings for a reason. It's their own fault if they don't notice them.

So? Its an appropriate rating.

If the elementary school had followed the rating (teens) the book wouldn`t be there.

And the thing they are concerned about is sexual content, which pretty much vanishes in the later volumes.

It's not like DB was over the top violence or nudty compare to series like Bastard!!.
Viz rated DBZ for All Ages instead of Teen
I find the Sayain saga arc to be the most part of the series to be Rated T while everything else is fine IMO.

That video is stupidly funny

Anyway... sure, DBZ got less nudity, but it got a lot of deaths, decapitations and exploding heads for a book rated "All Ages"

"Ooh they are teaching our children to be mass murderers and chop people's head off!!"

Well, maybe to be on the safe side, I guess they could rate it Teen, even though it's not as bad as DB. I was never tormented by the first volume of Dragon Ball Z, although I was about 10 at the time, so I was close to being a teenager. Maybe I'm not a good general example.

But anyway, it's cartoon violence. Not "Looney Tunes" cartoon violence, but nonetheless it's cartoon violence, not really serious. People have a much more relaxed reaction to seeing Cell getting his head blown off than they do in a non-cartoon film when the same thing happens (i.e. a guy getting decapitated, not a super-powerful regenerative android named Cell getting decapitated  )

Cell ((and Boo)) would be the closest to an American cartoon character since he get blown up to pieces and gets back to normal like the Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry and such.

But how about when Vegeta chops Gurd's head off, or that monk who got his exploded by Babidi?

Or Majin Boo punching Bobbodi's head off?

Eh. I'm not totally against them rating it Teen. The majority of DBZ isn't all that bad, in my opinion. There are moments when it can be classified as too severe, though (possibly Videl vs. Spopovich? I remember in the anime, that was effing brutal).

I do not agree. Not over the top sexual content will always have an higher rating or at least an equal rating as not over the top violence has.

So either keep the system as it is or make both have teen rating.

Yeah, now I think about it, DB and DBZ are both in the same in terms of their violence. The only reason DB has a Teen rating is because of the nudity, which DBZ lacks.

People seem to approach nudity and sexual content more seriously than violence. Violence seems to be much more common than nudity and sexual content, a topic which is more avoided and less seen in pre-watershed television and everyday things. Violence is something you will be confronted with throughout your life. Sex is something you'll only be taught about once you are in double figures.

So now I think Viz should give DBZ a Teen rating. Both DB and DBZ have an equal amount of violence.

See, it's all better now, and with minimal casualties along the way. Maybe some day this kid's mom will stop being so overprotective, and then they'll be able to read Dragon Ball as nature intended.

I should look for it, but there was a poll as to what the number one thing that parents didn't want their kids seeing in video games. It went something like the worst being homosexuality, the next being sexual relations/intercourse, the third being decapitation and violence, fourth being drugs, fifth being drinking, or something to that effect.

Sex trumps violence. Homosexuality trumps sex.

I guess they'd censor the Abridged Mez and Goz even more than this, then.

Parents aren't going to see sex and decapitation in games under 15 rating anyway. If a parent is trying to stop a teenager who, by game rating standards, is perfectly suitable to play a game with sex and violence in, that's fucked up.

But if the worst thing parents can think of to be in a video game is homosexuality, and that's above SEX (the big no-no for parents), it says a lot about the parents who were polling, eh?
