Die-hard dub fans (why are you, if so?)
Really, all of this is subjective. I personally don't see how anything is ruined.

You're correct, the feeling it produces is subjective, true.
However, you can't deny that those lines were not in the original Japanese script. It's not Funimation's job to "improve" a script.

It's because it wasn't in the original script so adding lines just feels like it shouldn't be there.jjgp1112 wrote:Really, all of this is subjective. I personally don't see how anything is ruined.

I'm curious - how does it really add up? This is a TV show we're talking about. It's still the same damn show to me. Gohan still gets angry and goes SSJ2 when Android 16 gets killed. Goku still sacrifices himself to save the earth and stays dead because he attracts too many villains. Gohan's still a cornball when he's a teenager. Piccolo's still evil in the beginning until becoming good. Vegeta's still an annoying, arrogant, elitist, whiny bitch. Trunks still comes from 20 years in the future and is trained by Gohan and saves his future later. Basically, nothing's really different.JulieYBM wrote:It's a gratuitous change. One of many. Those add up, the series is not the same because of those many changes. It's sort of hard to argue otherwise.

Well I guess you could use Kaboom's argument where it's to keep the short attention span watchers pay attention.JulieYBM wrote:It's a gratuitous change. One of many. Those add up, the series is not the same because of those many changes. It's sort of hard to argue otherwise.

'It adds up' doesn't denote or imply any sort of importance. It just means that the changes stack up to make the aforementioned TV show worse for him.jjgp1112 wrote:I'm curious - how does it really add up? This is a TV show we're talking about.
I've bitched about the dub enough, so just for a change of pace I'll say that I like the dub quote in jj's sig. "Freeza failed because he wore too many clothes", that's classic.

Also "Cat loves food. Ye-Ye-Ye-Yeah!" I don't know which episode that's from but that's a dub line.Dr. Casey wrote:'It adds up' doesn't denote or imply any sort of importance. I can forgive that one, because it's so off-putting, it's amusing.ShadowDude112 wrote:Also "Cat loves food. Ye-Ye-Ye-Yeah!" I don't know which episode that's from but that's a dub line.
Sort of like when Dende says, "Don't piss off the God of Love!"
Where did they even get that?

The original could have worked, too.SSJ2bardock wrote:It was their job to sell the show to an American audience and it worked.penguintruth wrote:It's not Funimation's job to "improve" a script.
Starblazers worked, but that doesn't make it better than watching the original Space Battleship Yamato.

I disagree, the people who whine about the "gay music" and "goku sounds like a girl" make up a large large part of the American Dragonball fanbase.penguintruth wrote:The original could have worked, too.SSJ2bardock wrote:It was their job to sell the show to an American audience and it worked.penguintruth wrote:It's not Funimation's job to "improve" a script.

That doesn't mean that a more faithful dub with the original music wouldn't have worked.SSJ2bardock wrote:I disagree, the people who whine about the "gay music" and "goku sounds like a girl" make up a large large part of the American Dragonball fanbase.penguintruth wrote:The original could have worked, too.SSJ2bardock wrote: It was their job to sell the show to an American audience and it worked.
People only complain about the original music because they're used to the Faulconer score. If it never existed, they'd be used to the Kikuchi score, I guarantee it.

Penguin, I agree on that last point but only to a certain extent. Some people probably would have disliked the Kikuchi score from the beginning. I mean, I like the 4Kids TMNT, but I absolutely hate its music (granted, this is originally made for their series) and it gets in the way of my watching it.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Well, regardless, the Kikuchi score is the intended score for DBZ.bkev wrote:Penguin, I agree on that last point but only to a certain extent. It's not Funimation's job to provide new music, either. The Japanese fans got along well with Kikuchi's score for decades without needing a new one.

Wow I can't believe in like 1-2 days this thread jumped like 3 pages!
I keep quiet and just enjoy reading this topic for the most part because I think it's a waste of energy to get all ugly about it. I supposed I'll add my 2 cents just because I have another interesting thing to point out in the mean time. I prefer the dub over the sub and am aware of the differences. Do I think those differences are a big deal? No they are not a big deal for me. So that would just be my personal opinion. Are they a big deal for other people? Well judging from this thread I'd have to say that's an obvious yes. It's just a matter of personal preference as it has always been.
Anyways on that note, I am an informed dubbie like I mentioned and am aware of the differences and have watched some parts in Japanese for comparison. But don't you guys think about when you are watching the subbed version how accurate the subtitles are? At least that's what I think about. I mean when I'm watching the dub at least I know exactly what they're saying whether it's an adaptation or not. Not only was I a broke teenager who could not afford to buy a bunch of VHS fansubs, though I did buy a few but that's it, the subtitles to me seemed off. I mean to begin with they were done by fans so how accurate could they be? The ones I got came across to me that the person who did them obviously wanted to insert as much profanity as possible. Not to mention spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalization were not very good...
Anyways, at least now there are more professional ones available. Though when I watch it in Japanese I still listen closely to see how accurate the subtitles are since I have a pretty good understanding of Japanese. Not everyone has a good understanding of the language so they would miss things like that. Also some things in Japanese can not be literally translated into English or else they wouldn't make much sense. You'd have to have a sense of the language and culture to understand them so even in subtitles they have to give you an English adaptation sometimes.

Dragon Ball Z has that misfortune of coming along RIGHT BEFORE anime really began to make some headway in terms of both television and being seen as a legitimate medium in the mainstream. It's kind of caught in limbo in terms of how dubs go. But back in the day when I couldn't afford DVDs and didn't know what DBZ Uncensored was - let alone the fact that Goku was voiced by a WOMAN, that dub sold me. Hook, line, and sinker. Back in the day, it worked on me like a charm.
Here's where hindsight comes in...
I think what burns me on the dub of DBZ NOW and why I haven't watched it in English for...shit, I dunno...seven years is really just the fact that there's no moments in the dub where everything just shuts up for a second. Someone's always has to be talking off screen and when that isn't happening the music's getting cranked up to eleven. And the script changes...
But really, when it comes down to it, I don't care if you are a fan of the dub. I don't. Power to you, brother. Keep on keeping on. I respect your opinion even if I end up disagreeing with you.

That line caught me so off guard when I first heard it. I think if someone said it to me 60 years from now when I have heart problems I'd croak on the spot.ShadowDude112 wrote:Also "Cat loves food. Ye-Ye-Ye-Yeah!" I don't know which episode that's from but that's a dub line.
