DragonBall Kai OST Vol. 2 tracklisting- NOW W/SOUND SAMPLES!
We finally have a tracklisting and sound samples for DragonBall Kai OST Vol. 2! As with Vol. 1, I've translated it for you:
EDIT: I hope nobody minds this late in the game, but I need to translate a couple of track names differently, now that the sound samples are up and the way I worded them doesn't quite fit for one reason or the other.
The ones I'm changing are 11. "Premonition" to "Presentiment" (as we already have a song on the same album with "premonition" in the title), 22. "Kami's Invitation" to "A Divine Allure" (since the song itself is only used in the scene where Bulma is creeped out by Mr. Popo's invitation), and 31. "Reaching The Limits Of Battle" to "At The Battle's End" (since it's the wonderful, slow piano piece I've been hoping for).
CD Total Time: 52:34
(Tracks that showed up on Vol. 1 are in blue)
01. DragonBall Kai ~Title~ TV Ver. (0:06)
02. Premonition Of A Grand Adventure (1:01)
03. Dragon Soul (TV Size) (1:25)

34. DragonBall Kai ~Next Episode Preview~ (0:33)
One thing I'm glad about is that we're getting the actual TV version of DragonBall Kai ~Title~ this time - I still have no idea why on earth they gave us the alternate version on Vol. 1. Of course, I don't really care much for the track itself (it's just a tiny fanfare), I just like my stuff complete.
Take a look at track 7. That star in the middle there kind of suggests to me it's the Kai "Rocky" theme (a.k.a. Gonna Bukujutsu Now) that everyone likes so much.
Tears Of Grief had better darn well be They Can Never Come Back, or I'm going to be mad.
Anyway, I thought for sure the synth version of Sanjo!! Ginyu Tokusentai!! was going to be on here, since it showed up in the latest episode (the lyrical version was used in the episode before), but this is all speculation in any case. The synth we heard in episode 29 might actually be a part of the lyrical song.

BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.
Two new insert songs again? What could they be used for? So the Ginyu Commando is here and we still have to hear 3 insert songs apparently:
WIN TOUGH FIGHT!
CHASER!!
CURE (I'LL BE HERE)
One of them is surely meant for the Super Saiyan transformation!
But for the remaining others, we can only guess!!
Any ideas on what moment could be perfect for an insert song apart from the Super Saiyan?

Um, just because they're providing us with synth versions of two vocal songs on each OST so far doesn't necessarily mean we're going to get an insert song of each and every one of them. And I somehow can't picture the Super Saiyan transformation scene with Win Tough Fight! backing it. The scene calls for something more "shocking" than "badass." Although I wouldn't put it past the Kai folks to use some insert song there... and I think we can rule out CURE as one possibility.

It is my belief that Win Tough Fight is meant for Gohan's Super Saiyan 2 transformation scene.

I know but... It's such a cool song! And it fits nicely if they edit the video a bit (which is completely possible being Kai after all). I wonder what else it could be for. I wonder if we're going to hear Dende's song in the show...? Lol.

Well, it seems to be that at the time, they didn't know the importance of Goku becoming a Super Saiyan. They didn't repeat this mistake twice and when Gohan turned Super Saiyan 2, they knew it would be a unique moment, therefore: insert song.
So I really think there has to be an insert song for the Super Saiyan, they can't possibly go through a moment that is so huge in the overall story with classic music, a unique moment has to be set to a unique music which likely won't repeat and which is there specifically for this moment, so an insert song seems likely. That's what I think.
Now it's true, as kenisu3000 said, that they're not necessarily insert songs, they could be openings/endings as well, or simply songs that will be featured on OSTs but not in the show itself. Though that would be weird to put these in the regular "in-series" OST then, and the presence of "OVER THE STAR" on the first volume seems to point things that way.
"WIN TOUGH FIGHT!" could fit into the first Super Saiyan transformation, though we still don't have any lyrics to judge. Maybe some other song too, since we still don't know what "CHASERS!!" sounds like for example.
"CURE (I'LL BE HERE)"n judging by the title, could be a song used to end the Freezer arc, when everyone is resurected and healed on Earth and Goku says he's alive and he'll return it time (well, he doesn't say it himself, but the dragon says it for him), it would end the season with that hopeful note and an insert song. Then the next season would start one year later with Freezer's arrival on Earth and the announcement of the Androids threat!
But there are many possibilities, an insert song could fit with Goku's apparent death on Namek, with some kind of sad song when Freezer's ship falls down and Goku has only a few seconds to live, with all the rays coming from the ground and into the sky, and Goku's hopeless look and remark as he realizes this is the end and we see the planet explode, along with him (or so it seems at this time).
It's less likely, but there could be an insert song for when he arrives on Namek too and joins the battle field. After all, this moment's really like "after all this time, the hero's here, we're saved"! But seeing the title "THE BRAVEHEART'S TRIUMPHANT RETURN", it would seem there's already a music set for it, so it's even less likely. Or then, maybe when he arrives to face Freezer and deflects all his deadly beams effortlessly... Hmm...

I think the best BGM for Goku's transforming will be complete silence only with SFX..... and after that a long going voice of violins with some orchestral hits right after.....
Also, that scenery on damaged Namek is really darktoned and quite serious.
They should add some darktoned and noir like music to it also....
no funny and happy dragon ball like melodies.
I'm pretty pissed of by those Yamamoto's game-like compositions in Kai, It's little artiffical and ''fight and be happy''.....
Kikuchi can be creepy, evil, mysterious, funny and silly in his music, but that's what I'm missing from Yamamoto, his music is kinda dead for me, like in video games, not responding well to situations on screen and lot of melodies are forgetable.
I'm enjoying Yamamoto's score as well and he is great composer for me, but soundtrack for Kai is for me like any other mediocre soundtrack for TV show.
I simply can't shit my pants down from everything Dragon Ball related.

Weirdly enough, it's just the opposite with me: for the first time, some Dragon Ball music sounds actually impressive! The original score not only sounds old but doesn't inspire me emotion either! Goku dying against Raditz was nothing emotional before KAI, recovering the dead bodies at the end of the Saiyan invasion wasn't sad, Goku's transformation into Super Saiyan currently is impactless (on the contrary of the way BURST LIMIT set an excellent music to it). Some music on the KAI OST actually makes me think of a cinema movie, no less (A Mighty Foe is really movie-like to me and you could almost picture it on a movie like Star Wars, especially when the big drums show up to add to the already well-aroused tension). Only a few memorable scenes had great music in the original: Gohan going Super Saiyan 2 for example had an insert song that actually had an emotional impact! In the same way, Dragon Soul obliterates Cha-La Head Cha La (again, that's how I feel, meaning the opposites of most fans in the world)!!
After an amazing vol. 1, can't wait for a vol. 2, hoping it features some missing tracks too, the orchestral feel of these soundtrack is wonderful

You know, insert songs are great and all, and they really make a scene memorable, but at the same time, I have to wonder if they don't "steal the show" from the instrumental BGM. Think about it, the entire Music forum is made up of maybe 95% threads about the vocal songs, and only once in a blue moon does a topic crop up about the actual instrumentals. They're the lifeblood of the series, folks.
Doesn't anyone find it kind of insulting that Toei/whoever went to the trouble of releasing 20 Hit Song Collections, not to mention Nintendo releasing soundtracks for each of the classic DBZ games, but nobody ever bothered themselves with releasing more than seven haphazard CD sets of the in-show BGM, most of which repeat a whole mess of music that showed up on previous releases?
What a crock.
Anyway, as for this new Yamamoto OST, I've done the math and it looks like (assuming they don't throw in any more tracks we haven't heard in the show yet) this will cover all but eight pieces of unreleased music - and most of those are probably the alternates of the Vol. 1 compositions, because I've also gone through and speculated for myself which each track might be, as corresponding with my list from the show... and it seems to me that the track named "The Braveheart's Triumphant Return" is probably the unique victory theme we hear in episode 16 when Gohan rebounds the Genkidama on Vegeta and everyone celebrates.

What a crock.

Cold Skin: I understand your likeness about Kai, but man, I can't understand those opinions which are saying: Man, original BGM in Dragon Ball series sucks, because it's old......
That's like saying that music from 50's - 80's sucks because it's old.....
That's obvious that music from 80's sounds old.....
- - -
It's the same as opinions that old anime is bad, because it have bad animation.
It's ironic hat most of the old anime are better then those nowadays craps....
Actually last series I saw was Mobile Suit Gundam and I enjoyed that oldschool disco-funk feeling from that soundtrack.....
I think that music, especially for me, is about taste and not about old sound..... Also, every decade have it's own magic in the sound of music and the way the music was mixedin studio.
Or live gigs, that's completely different story....

Yeah, I see your point. But it's just how I feel for the old BGM, it's just... "flat" for some reason! From what I heard, Bruce Falconer's music seems out of its place too, souding as ridiculous (to me, I'm not saying they're ridiculous, I know they aren't, but that's how I feel about them). That's why I admit that despite my opinion, the old OST is better than the KAI one. Somehow, it doesn't impact on me like it should and feels even annoying, action scenes seem boring with the music they're put into, it lacks dynamism and strong, cinematic emotion.MCDaveG wrote:Cold Skin: I understand your likeness about Kai, but man, I can't understand those opinions which are saying: Man, original BGM in Dragon Ball series sucks, because it's old......

In the sense of the old Dragon Ball music, re-doing it wouldn't work anyway as the tracks are boring to me for some reason (which I admit is very strange). It might be simply cause I'm used to hearing them over and over again since I was a kid. Also, maybe the problem is elsewhere: for some reason, I like much more the music of the Tapion movie. Why? How is the music different than usual? Good question. Strange, but that's how it is: I hate most of the original BGM and yet somehow the musics from the Tapion movie are not annoying and even manage to make me feel the mystery, the poetry, the happy mood or the nightmare... The music when Gohan and Videl stare at the top of the building, the Tapion ocarina theme, the "chasing the Dragon Balls" theme, Gohan seeing the city in fire, Trunks preparing to kill Tapion... They all just seem fine, and yet they sound like what you can hear in the regular series... So, why does the music from the original bores me will remain a mystery for both you and me! I know I can't really stand hearing it!
Even SOLID STATE SCOUTER, which is a great track that I absolutely LOVED when younger and wanted to own and now have is still great to hear... but so painful to hear! So epic... but so ridiculous! So upbeat... but lacking dynamism! It's illogical and yet that's how I feel, I think it sounds old in the sense that it lacks dynamism: no track will make me wanna good around dancing in my room or bring tears to my eyes, the music just "slides" on me. I realize the emotion it's supposed to convey, but can't feel it somehow.
While listening to KAI, some tracks will make me unconsciously move my head to the rhythm (An Unexpected Recovery), feel the dangerous action (The Saiyan, A Formidable Warrior), make me open my mouth as if shocked by a tragic event when hearing a sad music (Over The Star, Requiem), make me feel tense when there's a strong tension implied (A Mighty Foe), make me feel like a great, super-heroic battle is on (The Braveheart Challenges The Strong). My imagination can't help working when hearing those tracks, that's what makes the difference. Again, I can't really explain you why I guess, sorry... It's not logical to feel that way about the old and new tracks, but that's how it all feels to me, sorry...
But always retain that I don't consider the old BGM as lame in general, I KNOW it's great, but... it just doesn't work with me for some reason, really not.

That flatness is probably caused by mastering, he newer tracks from Movie 10 up sounds really different, also the music is more technical.....
Yeah, I can understand your point of view since you based it on essay like this, it's only based on taste of listener.....
For that emotinal matter..... Yes, Yamamoto have his music pretty agressive in means of symbolism.... If there is something sad, the music is sad, if there is fight, music is up-tempo with electric guitars plus lot of synthetizers in it..... That's the thing that I don't like, I like that Kikuchi because it's not that separated, but it's whole orchestral and everythink like sadness, anger, fun is mixed in one complete score. I like how this music is not that loud and like: It's based on music, but it¨s only drawing the background atmosphere....
So our tastes on Dragon Ball BGM are 100% opposite))))

Well, I've been enjoying some of the Yamamoto tracks, but most of them tend to fall into a bit of a generic sound to them. I realize that Kikuchi reused a lot of motifs, even entire tracks to make other ones, and of course tracks were used several times (how many times have we heard the music from the first DBZ movie, for instance?), but they somehow never felt boring or out of place. I'm already bored with a good number of the Kai tracks. Even if tracks are repeated, they should be good enough to where you don't get too bored of them.
Personally, I'm hoping that sort of triumphant music from when Goku left Kaio's planet is on the new OST. I was disappointed it wasn't on the first one, as it's probably my favorite piece of music for Kai.

But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

"There Is Hope For Earth," you mean? My guess is that it's track 25, "Good Fortune Endowed By The Heavens."penguintruth wrote:Personally, I'm hoping that sort of triumphant music from when Goku left Kaio's planet is on the new OST. BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

Like this piece of music?kenisu3000 wrote:Um, just because they're providing us with synth versions of two vocal songs on each OST so far doesn't necessarily mean we're going to get an insert song of each and every one of them. And I somehow can't picture the Super Saiyan transformation scene with Win Tough Fight! backing it. The scene calls for something more "shocking" than "badass." Although I wouldn't put it past the Kai folks to use some insert song there... and I think we can rule out CURE as one possibility.

Yes, something exactly like that. Except that I imagine if they were to use an insert song here, it'd be something from the Kai Song Collection, and from the samples I've heard, there's nothing quite that epic on there... Oh well, Goku should go Super Saiyan within the next ten or twelve episodes, so we'll see what they pull out of their hats then.Shoryuken wrote:Like this piece of music?

WE HAVE SOUND SAMPLES!
FINALLY!
I realize very few people even care about Kai's BGM (even less visit my site for the Kai BGM documentation), but for those who do, I've given the sound samples a listen and here's the new result of what's what:
01. DragonBall Kai ~Title~ TV Ver. is indeed the TV version of the opener/promo image jingle. Unfortunately, still no sponsor music.
05. The War Breaks Out! is the bridge known as Palpitating Shock! from the first episode, when Goku senses Raditz approaching Kame House. Cool, I think, since this one has only been used once and that was so early on; and it wasn't on Vol. 1, so I was expecting them to actually forget it existed.
06. An Isolated Warrior is Gravity!, from Goku's training with Gregory, among other scenes.
07. Training ★ Time, which I thought for sure would be the Kai "Rocky" theme everyone's so fond of, turns out to be PartyBoy Mix.
08. A Battle Of Rivalry, as I had predicted, is Rock My Socks, the rockin' electric guitar theme heard during Piccolo's training with Gohan, and when Kuririn and Yajirobe are sparring at Kami's palace. And as a side note, I would absolutely LOVE it if they used this song during the episode just after Goku goes Super Saiyan.
09. Whuhh?, again as I had predicted, is Contacting Roshi, heard only in episode 8 when Goku contacts Kame Sennin through Kaio.
10. An Elegant Noontime is Hooray For Senility, another one I hit on the mark before the samples came up.
11. Presentiment is The Big One, that is, the theme with the weird flute-thing that sounds like somebody blowing air through a straw. I guessed wrong on this one (I had marked up "An Eerie Stillness" to be "The Big One").
12. A Menace Unfamiliar, however, is one I guessed right: It's Danger Afoot, the anxiety-building theme, paying homage to a song from Budokai 1 (the one that plays during the cut scenes leading into battle).
13. An Eerie Stillness is Dire Straits, which plays in many scenes, such as when Freeza threatens the Namek Elder with the deaths of the children.
14. The Battle's Dance Music, surprisingly, is NOT "PartyBoy Mix" as I was expecting (see above), but happens to be Disposal Of Small Fry, used only when Kuririn and Gohan kill the two underlings of Freeza who investigate them.
15. Clouds Of War, as the name suggests, is a short bridge of The Clouds Of War Spread, alternate version.
16. The Braveheart's Triumphant Return is one of the versions of There Is Hope For Earth, the awesome waltz-y music heard when Bulma, Kuririn and Gohan touch down on Planet Namek.
17. Off To A New Adventure is Victory Is Ours, the triumphant theme that so far plays only in episode 16 when Gohan rebounds the Genkidama on Vegeta and everyone celebrates.
22. A Divine Allure is Creepy Popo, the harp theme when Bulma tries to decide whether or not to join Mr. Popo in his inspection of Kami's ship.
23. The Days On Planet Namek is Making The Most Of It, the bizarre Arabian music which so far only plays after Kuririn and Gohan save Dende, and they walk back to Bulma's Capsule House, Kuririn starting to lose hope that they'll ever gather the DragonBalls.
24. Kinto'un---! is completely brand-new! Unless it pops up in episode 32, which I haven't seen yet... Anyway, this peppy little tune is a fun addition.
25. Good Fortune Endowed By The Heavens is Silly Symphony, used when the Kame gang picks up the warriors from the Saiyan battle and when Goku insists to Dr. Brief that he doesn't need a stereo system installed in his ship.
26. Relief Concerto, oddly, appears to be an alternate of Silly Symphony. I'll have to go back through the episodes and make any needed corrections.
27. A Disastrous Spectacle is Hanging On The Edge Of Battle, the epic piece heard several times by now, but most notably when Goku prepares to open battle with Vegeta, telling Kuririn and Gohan to head back to the Kame House.
28. An Agonizing Choice is Helpless And Hopeless, a somber cello/violin piece so far used only when Kuririn and Gohan detect Vegeta's ravaging of the Namek village.
29. The Road To Tomorrow is Gonna Bukujutsu Now, the aforementioned "Rocky" theme.
30. Tears Of Grief is Parting Glance, used when Kuririn and Gohan watch Goku fly off to do battle with Vegeta, and also when Gohan comes upon the village Vegeta ravaged.
31. At The Battle's End is cause for me to rejoice - it's They Can Never Come Back, the song I wanted most on this album! It's the gorgeous string/piano piece that conveys anything from immense grief to immense relief, used when the reality of Yamcha's death hits Bulma after the Saiyan battle, when Gohan argues with his mother to let him travel to Namek, during Goku's conversation with his deceased friends through Kaio, and most recently, when Kuririn explains Kami's arrival on earth to Saichoro.
32. The Gods' Bolero is Lords Of The Afterlife, the heroic piece used when King Yama is introduced, and Kaio reflects on how the Saiyan battle has turned out, just before Kuririn turns the sword on Vegeta.
All in all, this takes care of the lion's share of the unreleased Kai pieces, except for about seven alternate takes of pieces from OST Vol. 1 (not to mention that of Vol. 2's "An Isolated Warrior," which is really just the bassline with all the bells and whistles of the song stripped away), and the sponsor credits.
