Is there censorship in the Shonen Jump?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Is there censorship in the Shonen Jump?

Post by Mike D » Mon Feb 21, 2005 1:14 pm

Before Trunks arrived to kill the Jinzoningen, #17 was shot by an old man. #17 is supposed to have a gun in his hand when he confronted him.

I just got the April 2005 issue of the Shonen Jump and #17 is missing his gun in this scene. Is it just me, or is everybody missing this and is SJ censoring stuff in their magazine?

Yeah. It's pretty lame. It's not so much that we're not noticing... it's just that it's so pointless now, with all the crap they've been doing, that it's not even worth our effort to care or make a fuss, anymore. It's a completely lost cause.

Bye-Bye, Viz. Away go your customers. Name changes and attack changes are one thing, but physically altering/censoring the artwork... *up goes the collective fandom finger*

The SJ magazine has been slowly getting worse and worse. What with "Hercule" and "Zolo". I remember Viz said a long time ago that they would never edit any of the images. Hmm, guess they must have "forgot" about that along with their promise of not making any name changes.

I was going to e-mail them a picture of myself mooning them but then I realized why bother? They're just going to superimpose some heart boxers on me in the pic anyway.

I didn't see them say that but I'm pissed off to see they're going back on this statement. Least DB was pretty much un-cut (though I did get the original prints of DB 1 - 3).

I recently heard that the "Zolo" thing had something to do with copyrights or something, but that gun erasing is pretty stupid. (Damn soccer moms who are so sensitive about guns).

Wow... totally missed that...

WHY!? I sent them a letter regarding all this censorship, and they never got back to me. I guess they just ignored it, and let me tell you , it was a formal letter (none of the stupid little fanboy "fuck you you fuckin' idiots' BS). I guess they went back on their promise to real fans and decided to cater to kids of the "Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon dub trail of thoug

This isn't the first time though, look at the image where the Z-senshi are flipping off Imperfect Cell (the one drawn in "chibi" style). American version = no birdies!

That isn't a surprise. Viz hardly ever responds to letters on censorship and name changes, the ones they do respond to are either told lies or they avoid the question altogether.

I just don't get why Viz makes such a big deal about the right to left printing when they're willing to change the artwork in their mangas. Editing artwork is much worse than if they printed left to right.

It seems all they ever respond to is praise... Let me join in with the fandom as I raise my finger along with them!

So, I'd like to ask you all: [If you've already started collecting the manga] will you continue buying it?

It's not like they can do anything now with the names and all...it would just be awkward for them to change any of the name-editing after they had already changed it. All we can do is hope Viz doesn't screw up its titles any more.

Now either their standards have changed over two years, or does anyone else find it strange that they cut out someone holding a gun to a guy's head, but keep in Yamcha getting impaled and Android #20 ripping a guy's head off?

Just goes to show how idiotic these changes are! They can show aguy catch on fire on Yu-Gi-Oh, but the can't show Tao-Ren's ass coming out the shower!

They can't hide behind their "Dragonball is rated A of all ages" excuse, because they show all of Mutenroshi's antics!

Actually DB was rated T for Teens. DBZ was A for all ages, (though they still show lots of blood).

What's funny is that you can find Yusuke and Chu stepping on knives less than 20 pages back. Not only that but in One Piece, Gin (I think that is his name) is holding a double-barreled gun to somebody's head. I guess that 17's gun was removed because he shot the man even though it isn't shown.

Random and I discussed this on AIM. We've decided that they either went through a staff change or they're ruled by a monkey on crack.

Perhaps this is because DBZ became really popular with the young crowd; thus, Viz expects the majority of the readers to be younger. On the other hand, readers of One Piece are probably older, at least I think...I'm not sure if it caught on with the kiddies. I don't know...this is just another one of my mindless attempts at trying to contribute to a discussion. Maybe it had something to do with Viz's changing locations or a possible staff change. I'm leaning toward the monkey on crack possibility.

So? They are still within the same publication, so what's stopping a kid from reading One Piece in a magazine they already own? I think if they censor on, they should censor the other, instead of doing all this "pussyfooting censorship".

How terrible... Back a long time ago I remember telling myself I'd probably pick the entire series up sooner or later just to have in my collection. The manga is awesome and I'd be nice to marathon it all over a few nights sometime. From all these stupid changes though, it won't be this version anymore. The little things all really add up.

I'll probably just snag the kanzenban someday if I ever see them for cheap.

To be fair; pretty much any kind of censorship is half-baked. Almost by nature, it seems.

But yeah, it does looks awfully silly to cover up a gun on one page... and then leave in a bunch of other guns within a few pages of the same book (to say nothing of other violent scenes in DBZ that were untouched).
