So I bought A Bootleg Dragonball DVD Set....

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Tue Feb 22, 2005 3:03 pm

Just let me begin with, I hate buying bootleg DVD's, I love the Naruto manga but never seen an episode because the only ones avalible are those bootleg DVD's...

I was in China town on my day off for presidents day and came across this store that had pretty much nothing but bootleg DVD's. There was this one Dragonball box set thing with 6 DVDs that caught my eye. It says it has the first 56 episodes so I figured its those Pioneer dubs... I even ask the guy and he said it has both the English and Japanese verions, now I, and any of you would think thats impossible. Anyway the price was right being only 40.00$ for what I thought would be the Saiyan and Namek saga.

I got home, put it in and to my surprise it was both the English and Japanese versions...

When you first put it on its in Japanese by default, but it you go to audio in the menu, the episode chapters now become the English episodes.

I've never seen these episodes in Japanese before (being against bootlegs) so it was like I was seeing them for the first time...again.
I think these episodes are taken right from the Dragonbox DVDs from Japan because the picture quality seems to be much more sharper then the Pioneer version. Also, at the end of every episode it has the Japanese preview for the next episode.

Now, as you might suspect the subtitles are horrid, wich pretty much kills the whole feel of excitment. A lot of names were pretty bad, like Dende was now DanDan and Dodoria was now DoDoDa and from what little Japanese I knew I could spot some mistakes in translation. I kinda half expected that when I bought this, but I thought I was just getting the English dub so it was kind of a pleasent surprise.

In the end I'am really looking foward to the new FUNimation dub of these episodes...err actually the official release of the bi-lingual DVD's.

Heh. I have these bootleg DVD's where Chibi Gohan was called Goten and Dr. Gero was called Dr. Gary once. Not to mention Anime Labs calling him Dr. Jello.

Bak when "Yu-Gi-Oh!" first made it to the US, I knew since it was by the hand of 4Kids. that there would never be an uncut release (never say never! ) So I broke down and bough a Hong Kong DVD.

Yes they are extremly bad, The Blue-Eyes White Dragon was called "Green-Eyed White Dragon" even though you could distinctly hear the Japanese voices say "Blue". And other weird card names plagued it, like Exodia being "Astina"... My personal fave was Pegasus being called "Pecassi". Lame to the third power!

Don't buy these shitty boxsets... You could've saved your monet and bought one of the FUNi ones >_>

I unwittingly bought one of the Naruto sets. Worst $50 I ever spent. I want my friends to see it but I HATE having to explain what the hell's going on because of the bad subtitles.

Oh! HK DVDs are HORRIBLE! I bought the original Yu-gi-oh movie, and they actually translated the Dark Magician as......wait for it......The Dark Pharmacist! I was rolling on the floor! Yeah, the ultimate uncut editions from FUNi can't come soon enough!

I actually have a lot of HK sets. They really vary in subtitle quality. My Saiyuuki ones are watchable, and actually understandable, where as my Shaman King ones are unberable.

I believe we have the same DVDs..
..and yes they do suck. I remember watching those back in like...'02. They really pissed me off. The subtitles were going off the screen and everything. The madness wouldn't end until the Battle City arc.

Wasn't Kaiba called "Seahorse"

Well what do you expect? They're translated from Japanese to Cantonese, then to English. Things are bound to get screwed up in that process. Unless they've done a direct rip of the Japanese product where there are already translated subtitles, like they did for Studio Ghibli's movies. They are a direct rip from Sony's. Most of the time that isn't the case though.
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

I think the majority of HK dvd subtitles go with the names the characters are given in the local (usually Chinese) version. I bought the One Piece box sets and they were ok, some things got on my nerves a bit...Sanji being called Sunkist. :) Although in their defence, they stuck to calling Luffy's brother Portagas D. Ace.
Anyway I'm curious, what we're Goku and Vegeta's subtitled names?

MokMa and they called Exodia "dark magician" sometimes.

Goku and Vegeta were still Goku and Vegeta. Every now and then they would flop up and call G somthing like...Goten or Sky/Air. My advice is just to not waste any of your money on this stuff if you want accuracy. But, if you are like me and dont give a damn. Then be my guest. :D

Just for the hell of it I wrote down what happens within the first 3 minutes of the first episode. This is all a direct copy from the subtitles. As you can see there bad, but I've seen worse....

Anouncer: Piccolo tries to conquer the world, but his plan was hindered by Goku, 5 years have passed just like that. The world is now at peace. But, a new eviel is nearing once again...

(Radiz ship is seen flying through space, crashes on earth)

Episode Title Anouncer: Mini Gohan

Chi Chi: Gohan!
Chi Chi: Gohan!
Chi Chi: Time for food
Goku (looks at a tree): This is nice
Chi Chi: Gohan! Goku where is Gohan
Goku: Iam so hungry
Chi Chi: What are you talking about. Did you see Gohan?
Goku: I didnt see him
Chi Chi: Wonder where he went? If you don't finish your food fast Master Roshi will get frustrated if you let him wait too long.
Goku: Alright I'll look for him, He should still be around.
Chi Chi: (speaks but no subtitles come on screen)
Goku: Leave it to me.
Chi Chi: Thank you, I really dont know what to do with that kid.
(Goku runs off)

Farmer: Just a bit more (See's Radiz ship) This..what is this...what was that just now, is that a meteorite? Is it a flying saucer?
Famer: (After driving to the crash gets out) Take a look. Dont look like a meteorite? What is it?

(Raditz come out of ship)

Raditz: A man from this planet? I think he's still breathing. Kakarot that fool.
Farmer: Who...are...you?
Raditz: Power at only 5? Rubbish,
Farmer: Dont come close I will shoot!
(Farmer shoots and well you know...)
Raditz: There is really such a weak citizen? (Scouter bleeps) Such A strong fellow. The distance is at 4880....is that Kakarotto? (Flys off)

Also just to throw this in.... When Raditz first meets Piccolo and Raditz flys off Piccolo drops to the floor and says " It cannot be, Iam being absurbed" (exact spelling BTW) Then in the next episode the recap shows the same part but this time the subtitles say Piccolo is saying "His power...Iam shivering"

Apart from some gramatical errors and the lack of subtitles, I don't see major screw ups (sp?) in the translation.
