Is what FUNimation did so horrible?

...yes? It's certainly not about interpersonal relationships, or growing up/maturity or anything else but "I want you to hit me as hard as you can". Other stuff appears every now and then, but it is just tiny sparkles from the corner of one's eye as we barrel onwards to the next punch to the face.
I'm not mistaking DBZ for any multi-layered treatise on the complexities of life and humanity, but it is full of quirky personalities and interesting interactions that are simplified unnecessarily for the English dub.

Frankly, that's what is so frustrating about the dub. What they did was so unnecessary and cynical. Like American children are so stupid, they can't handle that Goku is a hick who often fights because it's fun, rather than to save the world, or Freeza is a sophisticated tyrant who is cordial even to the people he plans to kill horribly. No, instead, they went out of their way, worked harder than they had to, to make everything just so much stupider than the original.

They took a cartoon for average children and turned it into a cartoon for mentally disabled children.

Wouldn't it have been so much simpler to do an accurate English dub?

You know, I don't get hung up on minor details between Japanese versions and English dubs. I get hung up on enormous details like those.
From what I have seen, most of their motivations seem to be the same. Tone? Both dubs do have tone? Defeat villain, train, fight the next villain, etc. All that other stuff I see is just minor details. That isn't going to prevent me from enjoying DBZ if I decided I'm not in the mood to watch subtitles. I'm not obsessed with every little epic detail of Akira Toriyama's Dragonball. I don't go and pause the screen and ask myself what the significance of this and that is. Or discuss on a forum in great detail, how Ki works. Like DBZ is science and it must be explained , and if anyone gets it wrong. They must be corrected immediately!

Even if they did, I bet you still wouldn't be satisfied. You would still find something to criticize.

SSV, Rocketman meant the show in general. Don't lump him with the subbies, I wonder if he's a fan of anything other'n ChiChi and of course Vegetto.

SSVegetto, can you honestly tell me that things like Vegeta's death scene on Namek, Gohan's transformation in the Cell Game, and a host of other scenes in the show are the same in both versions?

The little details make all the difference. They're the difference between Vegeta crying over his wounded pride and him crying because Freeza made him evil, for instance.

And there are tons of other instances. Something tells me you never read through DBZ Uncensored.

I did, well nearly so. The redubbing made the scene much better than it was before. However, had the dialogue been more accurate it would have been every bit as good, if not better. At least the acting made it more emotional, and of course, watchable this time around.

Well, I found myself more emotional when watching the English dub. It's like they improved Akira Toriyama's story. Not so much it that it actually changes the show. I mean Vegeta still dies. Vegeta is still arrogant and grumpy. That is still minor to me. It's still the same show to me.

So, what you're telling me is, you approve of a completely out of character Vegeta who blames Freeza for something he prides himself on (being a murderous asshole) to the honest Vegeta who knows who he is, why he's like that, and likes it?

Wow.

So I guess you prefer White Knight Goku to naive hillbilly Goku, Grandma Freeza to dignified gentleman murderer Freeza, and shrill bitch Bulma to frustrated genius Bulma, too.

This is what I'm saying. You're not a fan of DBZ. You like some other show that uses its footage. Like Robotech.

More "true fan" nonsense? I agree that it's a different show, but being a fan of one version doesn't make you NOT a fan of the story.

The dub actually contains both; it can be inconsistent with itself at times. It really depends on what episode and what "season" you are watching.

It's pretty consistent in the Season Two FUNimation dub, and the Season Seven and beyond dub however.

penguintruth: Stop with the "not even DBZ" stuff. I understand what you're trying to say, but it's just going to rub people the wrong way and cause problems.

Everyone else: Stop making contrived, look-the-other-way excuses for the dub's crappiness. It's bad. Fact. Nobody's telling you you can't like it, but it's a bad dub, period.

This is what I'm saying. You're not a fan of DBZ. You like some other show that uses its footage. Like Robotech.

You are over exaggerating. I'll explain to why I think it's the same show. Take for instance why Goku let Vegeta go during the Saiyan saga. In the Japanese dub it states he does it so he can have the challenge to fight Vegeta again. In the English dub it states he wants to forgive Vegeta.

Now, wouldn't it be implied that in the Japanese dub that part of Goku's reason for letting him go to forgive him also. And also wouldn't be implied that in the English dub the part of Goku's reason for letting him go, is so he can fight him again also? Also, White knight Goku vs Hillbilly Goku? What the heck? Goku defends his friends in the Japanese dub also. That doesn't make him a white knight. To me , nothing is changed.

Also, in essense, even if Vegeta didn't want to be a murderous asshole, he was still being forced by Freeza. So he didn't have much choice anyways. Funimation is good at figuring out stuff like this also, so they don't totally change the show.

From what I have seen, most of their motivations seem to be the same.
Son Goku (sub): I wanna fight just for the sake of fighting and becoming better at martial arts for no other reason other than because I enjoy it.

Goku (dub): I wanna fight to protect innocent people, right wrongs, and smash evil doers.

Vegeta (sub): I worked as a genocidal mass murderer for hire because I’m a sick, sadistic bastard who gets his rocks off inflicting pain and death on people weaker than I am, and lording my power over the defenseless. I live for making the helpless suffer.

Vegeta (dub): I worked as a genocidal mass murderer for hire because Freeza was such a bad influence on me when I was young and impressionable. I never would’ve done it if I had known better and had a positive influence, honest!

The Saiya-jin race (sub): We’re a bunch of psychopathic, horrifically brutal space barbarians who rape and pillage the shit out of whatever society we stumble across in our travels, so we can steal all their cool shit for ourselves. We have zero problems slaughtering defenseless men, women, and children for no better reason than killing boredom. We’re also a bunch of sniverling, cheating, rat bastards who will say or do or kill anything to stay alive and stay on top. We don’t give a shit about anything else and are happy as long as we have booze, tits, and the mutilated corpses of our slain victims around us at all times. We also wind up working for a genocide-for-profit company cause it lets us do our usual schtick, while also getting paid for it and staying in the good graces of the scrawny bad man with horns who’s so powerful he could probably wipe us all out with bad breath alone.

The Saiyan race (dub): We’re an honor-bound, cultured race of warrior noblemen who also work for a genocide-for-profit company, regardless of the fact that there’s absolutely zero honor in such work, and that it’s about as polar opposite of anything cultured or noble as you can get. We also do it to stay in the good graces of the powerful tyrant who can wipe us out, which is pretty cowardly and also flies directly in the face of anything noble or honorably warrior-like. This crisscrossing of totally conflicting concepts and motivations doesn’t make a lick of fucking sense, but hey that’s cool, cause it makes the background of two of the main characters much more palatable for dipshit kids to idolize guilt-free and with zero moral grey areas to concern their merchandise money-giving heads over.

Run the definition of “same” by me again?
SSVegetto wrote:Tone? Both dubs do have tone? Defeat villain, train, fight the next villain, etc. All that other stuff I see is just minor details.
What you just described isn’t the “tone” but rather the general story formula. Those are two entirely different things. Tone is a lot of things, and is generally the networth of things like the music, the acting style, the art and animation, the directing, the sound effects, the finer details of different things, and the general atmosphere that they all come together to bring. That’s what “tone” is.

“Character A kills character B and goes from point C to point D” isn’t tone, it’s the most baseline and brisk of summations about the overall story progression, and in approximately soundbite/TV Guide summary length at that. Only reason the dub absolutely cannot fuck with this no matter what is because it’s inherent to the visuals and to the animation itself. This seems to be the overwhelmingly biggest sharing theme that links both versions, and it only is because there’s absolutely no choice in the matter without FUNi having to make their own show totally from scratch or pull a Robotech/Windaria with the footage. The rest is audio vandalism that’s youtube fan-parody quality at best.
SSVegetto wrote:Well, I found myself more emotional when watching the English dub. It's like they improved Akira Toriyama's story. Not so much it that it actually changes the show.
So you’re telling me that in say, the Bardock special, when Bardock lights a Kannasan on fire with a Ki attack and the Kannasan is yelling his last warning to Bardock about the psychic visions over his own screams of agony in the original and the dub goes ahead and changes this via the dialogue so that the Kannasan isn’t on fire but is “absorbing and converting the energy” of the attack while calmly explaining the psychic situation to Bardock (yes this is a real change from the sub to dub: look it up on your Bardock DVD and see for yourself)… you’re telling me that the way the original did this scene is LESS cool than the dub’s revision, and that the dub is more emotional and an improvement over it?

Again I’ll repeat: you’re arguing that a version of a show where a dude gets lit on fire and burns to death while screaming his last words in agony and defiance is LESS badass than a different version where he’s perfectly okay and is just absorbing energy while saying his last words totally normal like nothing's happening; and that the latter is somehow an improvement on the former. I have this right?

Let me get this straight... You're suggesting that FUNi gets a free pass for making stuff up out of left field because they somehow know the material better than the people who made it in the first place?

No. Wrong. That's not how it works.

I'm starting to agree with him. Super Sentai fans are not necessarily fans of Power Rangers, and vice-versa.

SSVegetto, forget it. You're obviously a lost cause. Now you're inserting "what if" motivations to fill in the discrepancies between the Japanese and English version.

This isn't like the difference between, say, the Japanese version of Death Note and the English dub. If you honestly think the DBZ dub is as accurate as most of the rest of the market's dubs, there's nothing I can do to convince you otherwise.

I'm just wasting my time.

I do agree that they're slight to major character deviations that somewhat change the story, but in the end, I think the Dragon Ball Z dub tells the same story despite its deviations that have collectively become obvious upon viewing. People will get the same impact whether watching the dub or sub, but for different reasons. Most of it having to do with character development, dialogue, and music as shown by above posts.

But really, most of this is starting to look like the Dub vs. Sub debate thread again.

I do like Dragonball, I just don't pretend it's anything other than big, loud and dumb as a post.

I hate the anime because it takes a fun story and stretches it out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out and out until it breaks under the strain and you're left with a pile of shit that people claim is the same thing because they can see corn in it.

All FUNi did was stick a pair of googly eyes on that pile of shit, but since googly eyes aren't standard to corn-on-the-cob they get the angry squeals of the fandom.

I absolutely don't think Funi's process would have been so bad if they kept the screen ratio at 4:3 personally. You know as well as I do they would be just as mocked here (rightfully so) but I wouldn't mind them as much. With the exception of season 2 the colors don't tend to bug me at all. It's really the disappearing lines that irk me more then anything.

He is actually both in the dub.

Even Vegeta states this in his "You are no.1 speech" during the Buu saga. He says something along the lines of "You fight solely for the sake of improving yourself, yet you're so gentle and loving that you wouldn't even hurt a fly!"

That, and Goku mentions his love for fighting numerous times throughout the dub. The only times where he's "SUPAR HEROICCK HAMMAR OF JAASTISS" are throughout most of the Saban/Ocean era, "Season Three", a single speech in the Cell arc, and during 1 or 2 moments of the Buu arc.

First, Rocketman, DBZ Uncensored was proven wrong ONCE when a line was actually in the original. Out of the hundreds of times of being right.

Second (for Metalwario64):

JP

(Vegeta watches Goku fight Kid Buu, and thinks about the past)

Vegeta (thinking): However, in the end, I was unable to surpass you. At first I thought it was because you had something to protect- that having a strong mind towards defending something gave rise to some mysterious power. That might be true, but then it would have been the same for me, now. It was to have my own way, it was for my own enjoyment, it was to kill my enemies, and it was for my own pride that I had fought. But Kakarot, you were different. You don't fight in order to win, you fight in order to be certain you do not lose, and in order to keep reaching your limits. That's why you don't worry about taking your opponents life. In the end, you never did kill me. It's as if you knew that I would now come to have the slightest bit of a heart. It's so maddening! That there should be a Saiyan who loves to fight, yet is kind! Hang in there, Kakarot! You are Number One!

ENG

(Vegeta watches Goku fight Kid Buu, and thinks about the past)

Vegeta (thinking): But no matter how strong I became, your power still exceeded mine. At first, I thought it was your loved ones. That it was your instinct to protect them that spurred you on and pushed you beyond your limits.
(Talk in the flashback that wasn't originally there, then returning to Vegeta)
Vegeta (cont.): But then I found myself with a family of my own and my power didn't increase at all. I used to fight for the sheer pleasure of it, for the thrill of the hunt, oh I had the strength unmmeasurable! I spared no one. And yet, you showed mercy to everyone. Even your fiercest enemies! Even me! Yet you never fought to kill, or for revenge, only to test your limits, to push yourself beyond them, to become the strongest you can possibly be. How can a Saiyan fight like that and yet be so gentle that he wouldn't hurt a fly? Oh, it makes me angry just thinking about it! But, perhaps it is my anger that's made me blind to the truth for so long. I see it now, this day has made it all too clear. You're better than me, Kakarot. You are the best.

Sometimes subtle differences make all the difference. Son Goku absolutely would "hurt a fly". He's killed enemies. He has no problem with it if he has to. The reason he spares them isn't compassion, it's because usually he's too into the fight to concern himself with the consequences. He fights mostly because it improves him as a fighter.

Not that he doesn't care at all about the world or his loved ones, but Goku is a little selfish that way. The fight is always first.

The dub also misses out on Vegeta's theory that Goku may have been waiting for Vegeta to change. Instead, it goes into Vegeta thinking he's been blinded by his anger. This may be the truth, but Vegeta doesn't say anything of the sort in the Japanese version. Why give him an extra insight he didn't originally have? It makes him seem much closer to changing his ways, and Vegeta isn't supposed to be that different in the end, just not as obsessed with defeating Goku.

Kentai wrote:Son Gokuu is a fascinating character anyway, because he is - at face value, anyway - an idiot savant. The victim of violent head trauma as an infant [...] he's a simple bumpkin with a fair share of brain damage who's natural talents to work out what's wrong compensate for his broad lack of common sense. But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.
