Toei Attitude Change about Video Prints?

Post by pjay » Mon Nov 23, 2009 4:12 pm

Did Toei change its attitude recently about letting US companies have some of their better prints? I ask because along with letting Funimation release the Dragon Box here in the US they're letting Discotek Media release the entire Fist of the North Star TV series -- all 152 episodes in 4 box sets. Now of course I have no idea if this is the HD Remaster DVD-BOX set they released in Japan in 2008 for the series' 25th anniversary or something of lesser quality, but still it seems like Toei is getting a little less stringent with releasing their stuff in the US. Or am I reading too much into this?

They let Spain have some good masters awhile back. In terms of Dragonball, Toei was mainly stubborn about the DragonBox footage itself. The source footage they used to make the DragonBox was no big deal. I'm just guessing that FUNi didn't wanna shell out the cash for that footage for their Orange Bricks. Luckily, hardly anybody cared and it paid off for them.

Actually, they gave AB Groupe in France the masters and then France gave them to Spain to remaster them. And when AB Groupe saw that Spain fucked with the colors so much, they decided to just do their own remaster.

Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Well, the remaster that Spain did was the one with the bright and oversaturated colors. Spain used them for their DVDs and gave them to AB Groupe so they can use them for their own box set. But when AB Groupe saw what Spain did to them, they decided to do their own remaster for their DVD.

I remember the colors being alright, but not great. At the time I was comparing them to the Orange Bricks.

But now Toei (I think, I'm not 100% sure, I'm just assuming) is kinda doing what the US did to its own series with Kai.

 Again someone tries to save US dub at any costs?

You can say that about lot of series, but it wasn't good opinion, because Kai is remastered and it's re-edition, I was also watching re-editions of Mobile Suit Gundam, you can't say that it's the same thing......

In Japan they are making actual remastering, new sound mixing + new sound and also, they are cuting the material of boring filler or to make it as much as possible true to the original source..... It's also mainly done because of marketing, because they'll make new money from these re-boots and upgrades....

What Funimation done is only dub which isn't great, because I don't like dubs and localizations of original material where they are making cultural references known to the targeted audience, which obviously are ruining the original and it's done actually for people who are lazy to read subtitles or lazy to learn second or third language.
Also what the orange bricks are containing isn't even remastered material and lotta lotta more to say.....

AB renewed their license, and then got new masters. AB's main office is located in France, and Spain started working on releases before France. The guys in France were not happy about the result of what the Spanish releases showed, and thus did their own remastering.

Maybe Spain fucked up remasters, but I saw French dub 10 years ago, there were horrible edits.....

Castilian version of DB isn't best but it's a lot better then what France did (and German)

What has dubs to do with anything in this discussion?

That it's funny that half of Europe fanbase hates French version because they got it too in their countries, but France is upset because of Spanish remaster.....
French version is also heavily cut-off with load of missing scenes and screentime

If you want, I could go and compile a list to you of cuts, but that would take me some time, so just trust me when i say that there are not that many cuts in the saiyajin saga, and cell saga and out. Boo saga was actually dubbed uncut. The Freeza and Android saga was what was really cut. How do I know this? I have watched the french dub since I was 5...
