What you DON'T like about the Actors

Post by Pitzu » Mon Nov 23, 2009 11:19 pm

Not personality or anything, but how they say stuff or act.

I was always under the impression that Goku actually sounded like a women before I sat down and watched the sub of DBZ, not Kai, I'll only watch that dubbed.
While Nozawa's Goku is fantastic, but with recent stuff sounds TOO much like a women, I've always had a problem with how she yells the Kamehame-ha.

So high pitched.
Soooo high pitched.

I guess I don't really like who's doing Yajirobe' in Kai from what little I've heard.

I hate Masako Nozawa's little KKKKKkkkkKKKK sound thing. It grates my ears.

Now on the dub side of things, well, um....let's see. Sometimes Kyle Hebert sounds really weird during screaming scenes as Gohan. And some of Chris Sabat's minor voices could be a little more distinguishable. And Peter Kelamis in the Ocean Dub reminded me too much of those cheesy Saturday morning cartoon protagonists.

Same person who did it originally. I don't know what's up with it either. :<

Turtle/Umigame sounds kind of ridiculous, I suppose. Of course, Gouri's voice works more for somebody like Mr. Satan. I guess I feel that way because it's a talking animal adding on to his already over-the-top voice.

The 2nd Japanese Roshi actor sounded constipated all the time.

At least he was replaced with a much better actor in Kai.

Most the time it's not the actors who bother me, it's the writers and the script the actors are given that makes me mad. Example from ENG DB

Tien : You could be a good chyropracter!

long pause

Goku : WHATS A CHYROPRACTER?!

I love the Japanese cast, the onlly thing that angers me about them is, they can't speak English, and I don't speak Japanese. It's not their fault they don't, guess I'm just mad at my own DB self indulgence and there for am mad at my own-self.

All of the characters do that, but I like it. It sounds like they're really clenching their teeth and breathing through them. In fact, sometimes I do it myself because of DBZ.

I hate Aya Hirano....... that's unbelievably annoying act everywhere she is acting..... Dende and Athena from Lost Canvas are sounding the same and what I hate is the way she's speaking, she's breathing like she's running upstairs and crying in the same time and that making her a really weird mixture of voice intonation and hard breathing which I can't stand to listen...... And her singing? god damn it I wanna blow my brain out of my head.....

Yeah, her next famous act is Lucky Star. I'm not fan of it and never will only because of her voice acting, what I heard it's the same cup of tea I noted above.....
Damn I'm looking forward to Freeza killing Dende

That's what happens with age, you'll notice little differences from their performances from before and now. Horikawa's Vegeta in Kai, Wakamoto's Cell in the Sparking! games, and Tanaka's Kuririn being more like Luffy. To Nozawa's credit she's always trying to keep in top form even as older as she gets.

I don't know, in Kai Nozawa sounds manlier than ever. I'd think she was doing Tullece if I didn't hear the lack of malice in her voice.

If breathing through your teeth makes a K sound, there's something very wrong with your breathing. Or your teeth.

I like it in moderation. There are moments in the show where it just gets annoying like jjgp said, but sometimes I like it in a funny sort of way.

If anything that is my only complaint with the Japanese cast.

Seriously... I mean, I always hear about how "T3h dubbz sowdnz leik gay porn and consipitashun!!!!1" but all throughout my life I have always heard people grunting when they are in pain.

Just recently I was watching MSNBC's Lock-up program, and some officers were going through training which involving being tased. When it showed an officer getting tased, he would grunt, not go "KKKghkgkkkkkkkkkkkkeeeeeeeeecky!!!". I guess you could draw the comparisons of him sounding like he was having an orgasm if your mind is far enough in the gutter, but in reality that's how people sound when in pain...

Honestly, until I started watching anime in Japanese, I had never heard that sound in my life. :?

Thankfully there's far less of the latter than there is the former. I think its whenever she has to sing or chant that it becomes grating. I mean I get that it being annoying is kinda the point (especially with the singing), but god she does it a bit too well sometimes.
I wonder how much of that has to do with Junpei Takiguchi versus Mayumi Tanaka. I much prefer Takiguchi. I love Tanaka to death, but her Yajirobe (as much as I get the point/joke of the voice casting) and Baba just aren't that convincing to me.
Kunzait_83 wrote:Also yeah, Muten Roshi's subsquent Japanese VA after Miyauchi passed away. Jesus he was awful and a stain on every episode he opened his mouth in (which thankfully wasn't many at all).
You and I are so much in the same boat here. Hiroshi Masuoka was just awful. It was incredibly forced and had no elements of the wise master that Kame-Sen'nin actually is.

Miyauchi and Yanami (Kame-Sen'nin and Kaio) had such amazing dualities to their performances. At the drop of a hat they could switch into their "I'M ABSURD!" mode right in the middle of a long, dramatic, moving speech.

I don't know about anyone else here, but I like the English voices better than the Japanese voices. I've watched the Japanese versions of Dead Zone, The World's Strongest, and Tree of Might before, and I didn't think the Japanese voices were that great. Piccolo's voice in particular, made me go "WTF?", because I just didn't think the voice suited him very well. I definitely prefer his voice in the FUNimation dub, since he sounds a lot more menacing. In Return of Son Goku & Friends (or whatever it was called), Gohan's voice was way too high-pitched, and sounded exactly the same way he did when he was a little kid, as if he never hit puberty or something. Those are the only two character voices I really have a problem with in the Japanese version. Everyone else's voices sounded okay, but I still prefer the English voices.

Let's remember that this is *not* a "dub vs sub" thread. Thanks!

I was cracking up when Baba was doing her chanting during the Vegeta fight...I think I saw that in a clip Castor posted, but anyhow, her male actor at the time (Takiguchi?) was hilarious in the scene.

Wait...er...hmmm...on topic, as much as I love what Sabat has recently done with Piccolo, that damn barking he did during the Freeza through Boo arcs quite annoy me.

I dislike 95% of the dub cast's voices and acting, but I'm not going to go through every voice and why I dislike them because I have...to death.

In short most of the voice actors have these wacky Spongebob/Fairy Oddparents "WAKA WAKA CARTOON" voices which I don't care for. They exist in the Japanese version but are appropriately placed. (Foooor the most part I'll admit a couple of voices are "eh...really?" worthy)

The voices for Goku, Gohan and Goten actually do change when they grow up but it's a subtle difference.

To me it just sounds like somebody not being able to breath properly when straining with something heavy. In real life it's not as loud nor long as it is in DBZ of course.

How did Miyauchi die, out of curiosity? I always thought he was an old man based on his performance of Roshi, but he was actually much younger than I expected (I expected him to be in his 70s, but he was only in his 50s during the original Dragon Ball, where he was of course at his most important. He was 56 at his debut appearance, 59 going on 60 during the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai). He only died when he was 65... did he pass away from a heart attack or something? It's a shame. He would only be 80 were he still around, he could have easily survived until the present day, maybe even give an encore rendition of Roshi in Dragon Ball Kai (Which might be even better since he would truly be an old man by this point).
