What exactly does "Tokusentai" mean?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

What exactly does "Tokusentai" mean?

Post by Chibi Mystic Gohan » Sun Feb 27, 2005 2:56 am

Someone break it down for me. I know it has the word Sentai in it, and I've been wondering what a "Sentai series" meant :lol:

Here we go:

toku = special

sen = battle, fight

tai = team

戦隊 sentai = fighting team, squadron, fighting force

特戦隊 Tokusentai = special fighting force, special battle squad, special taskforce

Thanks a bunch ^_^

Now, without having to make another topic, could you help me? I want to know how to pronounce Piccolo's father's name, Katatz. A romanization from the Japanese manga would be nice, since I fully understand Japanese pronounciation.

カタッツ Katattsu is Piccolo's father's name, playing on 蝸牛 katatsumuri ("snail").

As an aside, the name of the elder ムーリ Muuri is obviously a pun on the other part of that word.

I don't even remember these people.

How do you make that small tsu that doubles the consonant...?

A sentai show is the Japanese version of Power Rangers (the original version in fact).

In Japanese IME, either by typing a double consonant or "xtsu."

Exactly, that's why they make all those goofy poses and introduce themselves all the time.

You mean it had nothing to do with Sailor Moon? :shock:

Although now that you mention it...
Jeece = Pink Ranger (pretty girl)

Barta = Blue Ranger (runs around fast-like when he's really not and gets thrashed as a result)

Guldo = Yellow Ranger (always expendable for some reason, first to get thrashed in a battle, if a strong enemy makes a sneek attack Yellow's the one on the receiving end)

Recoom = Black Ranger (strong only against minions, rushes right into battle)

Ginyu = Red Ranger (leader, strongest in group, only one to connect when attacking a strong opponent)

Goku (Ginyu in Goku's Body) = Green Ranger (enemy that joins the Tokusentai, was only strong when he was an enemy of the Tokusentai)

Toriyama is AWESOME. :shock:

Are you referring to the original team or a different one?

Before getting too out of topic, I just want to remind you that the sentai genre didn't start with Power Rangers. The Super Sentai series have been on Japanese TV for more than 25 years.

Yes exactly what I was going to say. And I believe Great Saiyaman was the spoof on Sailor Moon and her crazy poses.
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

I thought the Great Saiyaman was a spoof on Kamen Rider characters.

You mean the original Power Rangers wasn't that old? DAMN, Bandai, how bad is the quality of your show?! I figured whenever the footage looked like it was from a 70s Japanese show that it was well, the original 70s Japanese show. :P

The Japanese footage used in the first season of Power Rangers came from the 1992 season of the Japanese sentai (Zyurangers).

You could be right. I'm just going by what I've always heard, and that was that Gohan's speech and arm gestures were parodying Sailor Moon's routine "In the name of the moon.." speech.

B-kun: "What?"
