Legacy of Goku thoughts?

Post by Gogeta 00 » Thu Dec 10, 2009 8:23 pm

I just got finished reviewing Legacy of Goku on my blog.

My review can be found here

I am well aware that this game has a very bad reputation among fans, but I would like to know what you thought of the game yourself. Do you think that it is as bad as it is made out to be?

EDIT 2: Nevermind, fixed xD

Eh, I thought the game was all right. I mean, it's nowhere near as good as its sequels, but I do find it useful for killing time. I kind wish they'd remake it. so we could get a better version, but whatever. For me, it's a decent timekiller, but that's about it. I try not to emphasize it's flaws, since I do occasionally enjoyable.

I think they're all terrible. Nice looking (I've been ripping their sprites and buildings and things for years) but, damn, they're such a chore to play. They're repetitive and filled with some of the most pointless filler since the Garlic Jr. arc.

There are some nice things that pop up, but it doesn't really redeem any of the games for me. I like the Mode 7-esque flying around the world map. I liked examining things for little references. I liked when minor characters cropped up. But that's about it.

I guess they can be decent time-killers the first time you play them. If I were on a train or something maybe I'd kill an hour or two blasting squirrels infected with Black Water Mist to get Hercule's theme song so I can clear the rampaging dinosaur village level for some reason I can't even remember. Maybe.

A lot of people say Sagas is the worst DBZ game ever. My rebuttle is to always point at this game and Taiketsu.

The first one sucks and is boring. Hit an animal, run away, hit an animal run away, hit some villains, run away, end game.

The second and third ones however, are okay. They're not reinventing handheld gaming or anything, but they were fun little time wasters(and boy did you waste time playing Buu's Fury. The whole "Goten/Trunks hunt for Dragon Balls" thing was redonk).

The Original Legacy of Goku was "Meh" at best. It played like a Zelda-ripoff made by someone who had never played Zelda. The sequels were better, but never went beyond "OMG It's actually playable in this section!" for me. Although, I do confess that finding all the little references was fun for a while.

Sagas was an enjoyable disaster, moreso than LoG.

Yeah. I still play Sagas... gave up on LoG rather quickly. ('Course, I flat-out can't play gameboy anything, so that's probably the reason. :P :D . I sad the player2 port on my Sega Nomad is shorting out. Serves me right for having it in my room against school policy in 12th grade. XD).
I'd say what makes Sagas a disaster is the horrible glitchiness (last time I played, I somehow got Recoome stuck to Gohan's arm, and my cousin and I spent quite a while trying to get him off...), but ... m... h... Meh.
And It doesn't sound like glitches are the complaints people have with the likes of Legacy of Goku.

I'd say I like the DB-hunt in Buu's Fury, but my experience with that one is reading a walkthrough. :(. Which has influenced my DB/Z game ideas... Hee... :sneak: .

Umm, yeah, so for the long drive that I did try to play LoG, I... guess I liked that flight wasn't a normal given thing and that you actually had to work for it.

Having played Legacy of Goku 2, I naturally assumed the first one reached the Namek Arc with Goku, Kuririn, Gohan, Piccolo, and maybe Vegeta as playables. I borrowed it from a friend and was left wishing I could dream it was good again.

The only nice thing about LoG is that it was a very, very short game. It didn't waste too much of my life. I think that it took me about two hours to beat it. (All you have to do to win any fight is use Solar Flare, punch, punch, punch, then repeat until you win)

All I remember about Legacy of Goku is that it was the first Dragon Ball Z game I ever played and I was just happy that the show was finally getting a video game. I would always have conversations with my friends and say things like "Man I wish they would make a Dragon Ball Z game" or "Why haven't they made a DBZ game yet?" and they finally did with Legacy. In hindsight the game wasn't really that great but I was sure happy back in the day popping that cartridge in for the first time.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

If we're all here for a reason then I'm just visiting.

Breezed through that review... only 4 hours to beat it? Awesome! :D Haha...

So as I've noted a few times, I actually never played the first Legacy of Goku game. I... shockingly... don't even own it yet. I've finally fleshed out my GBA collection and own Box+Manual+Game for everything else, but that first LOG game... nope, never got around to picking it up.

I guess it was just released while I was still in college and not picking up every single last new game, so I managed to let it slip past me. The other games of the time were also terrible (Collectible Card Game, Taiketsu...) so there wasn't much in the way of mental incentive, I suppose, to get me to be interested in it.

I think I picked up its sequel before a trip down to Atlanta for AWA so I'd have something new to play on the plane 'n stuffage, even though I had heard how awful the first game was. I haven't played it since then, but I'm pretty sure I got Meri to play through it and we both enjoyed it well enough.

Y'know, I had no idea that this game was considered "awful." I played it as a kid and had a great time. That may just be because it was a Dragon Ball Z game though.

DBZ: Legacy Of Goku is, without a doubt, an unimpressive Dragon Ball Z game. It requires no effort or skill to beat the game and it's a ridiculous chore going through all the pointless quests (helping a man off an island? WTF?) which have nothing to do with the main series. Basically, everything that you pointed out.

It's a good thing I borrowed it from my friend rather than buying it myself. I still have it now, actually. I do take it out for a little play from time to time when I get bored playing my other GBA games. I liked some of the music though, particularly the Vegeta boss battle music (which originated from a dub track, if I'm not mistaken).

I like the first two but haven't had a chance to play the third yet. For some reason, I see the first as being a game that brings out Goku's character as a caring person seeing as how as he cares for everyone. But that's just me.

Well if you ever get around to buying it, I'm sure it will result in a very entertaining podcast episode. :D

I've only played the first one, and I didn't mind it so much. I remember I played through it a fair few times, and by the end I was taking it out in no time at all.
