Your dream dub cast

Post by Thanos6 » Tue Dec 15, 2009 6:02 pm

OK, let's turn back the clock to when Dragonball Z was about to first be dubbed for North American consumption.

You time-travel back and engineer things so you end up in charge.

You're allowed to pick and choose from any VA working in the English dub scene. Who would you cast in specific roles?

Some of my picks:

Petrea Burchard as either 18 or Videl. In my opinion the greatest living voice actress, she would be absolutely perfect for either role, able to bring just the right mix of action-girl, sultriness, and just the occasional flash of tenderness (watch her turn as Ryoko in the dub of TENCHI UNIVERSE, it's incredible).

David Kaye as Freeza. His performance as Megatron in BEAST WARS is a superb mix of civilized scholar and bloodlusting general. Just a slight adjustment to that voice and you'd have a great one, I think, for the emperor of space.

Dameon Clarke as Cell. I have no complaints about Mr. Clarke's turn as Gero's chimera. He stays.

Chris Rager as Mr. Satan. See above.

James Avery as Ninja Murasaki. OK, I admit, this is just one giant inside joke for TMNT fans. :)

So, your choices?

I forget who it was I was talking with, but it was definitely offline... and I'm pretty sure I also saw it here on the forum somewhere... I can't remember... :?

But Christoph Waltz is the latest actor I can think of that comes to mind as playing Freeza. Perhaps not him exactly, but the way he played Hands Landa in Inglourious Basterds is exactly how Freeza is played in Japanese, and should be played in English. You have this smiling dick of an asshat who's just swaying around with his amazingly condescending tone, but when it comes down to it, his speaking manner changes abruptly and he gets sadistic as all Hell.

Yep. That's Freeza.

The Ocean cast!

OK, I have no idea. I can't imagine the series without EITHER dub cast... but maybe if they could get Christopher Walken. I don't know as WHO, but it would be fun.

Kelsey Grammar as Piccolo Daimao
Tim Curry as Freeza
and Patrick Stewart as Cell

It would sound amazing.

If not for the man's accent, reading that would have made my pants drop a size or two.

I'm sorry, everytime I hear Kelsey Grammer, I can only see him as Frasier.

Maybe if you let him play Freeza and put David Hyde-Pierce as Cooler, and John Mahoney as King Cold... :D

That sounds like something Team Four Star would do... Blast, they've already established voices for Freeza and Cooler.

Is that a bad thing? TFS has made some fairly brilliant casting decisions, especially considering that they have to rummage through the talentless wasteland that is the internet.

Just to enjoy hearing these voices, I'd have to go with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Marlon Brando, James Earl Jones, Burgess Merideth and just a few others.

Patrick Warburton as Nappa FTW. You have to admit that would be awesome.

I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

Actually having Ahnuld as Metallic would make the joke more obvious, so I agree.

He would also be great as no.16 to go with the Terminator Homage that is the Artificial Humans arc.

Except that Arnold attempting to emote the way #16 needs to be played would result in...

Uhh...

Well, how FUNimation dubbed the character... :?

I guess you're right. He just can't come off as gentle or complex, can he? Best to just stick with Metallic then.....

Don't get me wrong, I love Patrick Stewart, I'm just not sure I could imagine him pulling off a megalomaniac like Cell. He's a great Shakespearian actor, but I think perhaps too dynamic for Cell, Cell needs a more of a calculating, cold and hollow performance in my opinion, maybe Richard E Grant could do a good job.

I echo the aforementioned sentiment regarding Christoph Waltz as Frieza, the guy was amazing in Inglorious Basterds. If he doesn't get an Oscar for that performance there is no justice in the world, what a truely magnificant piece of acting.

Although they started out bad, I eventually did get my dream cast
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I picked him because of his narrow range just like Norio Wakamoto, when you hear them both you know it's them. And I thought he suited Cell's dastardly calm tone.

I did an article about that for my blog (link is in my signature), but using only Funimation voice talent.

I think now that time has passed, I'd probably change my mind on attempting to use a female talent to be Goku or Kuririn, but I'd certainly replace their current VAs. I stand by most of my other choices.

Some highlights (for those too lazy to read the article):

- Travis Willingham as Piccolo

- John Burgmeier as Freeza

- Brice Armstrong as Kaio-sama

- Troy Baker as Kamesennin

- Aaron Dismuke as Mirai Trunks

That's a great article, and though I've read it before, I haven't posted anything in your comments. I would probably wait a few years before going with Dismuke. He may be too old for Alphonse, but he's still too young for Mirai.

Let's assume this is the mid 1990s, and that noone that's ... stopped being alive since then is alive.

Somewhere between that sentence and this one, I got to imagining Casey Kasim as Kaio. :?

I'm thinking not only on the characters and how they should be acted, but how certain voices would make me feel about them.
For instance, I was wondering about Tony J as Freeza... but I'd just be reminded of all his other villainous roles (and some not-villainous ones as well...). As Cold, though? Awesome.
Eh, big maybe, but Ian MCDArmid(SP?) as Freeza? XD
(I ... don't actually know much about many actors. ^^).

Brice Armstrong as Kaio? I really don't think I'd like that, but I could see it working. ... For everyone but me. :P. :D

I'm trying to imagine a Maurice LeMarche Nappa voice. I think he could do it... XD. Or possibly Dodoria?

I want to hear Mark Hammil's Piccolo, more out of curiocity than anything. :)
