Moments you feel the movies conveyed better?
Moments you feel the movies conveyed better?
The Dragonball Z Movies almost always take plot elements from the series and convey them in a new way, and a lot of the time this comes through mirroring some very specific and iconic events in the story.
Are there any moments in particular you think are conveyed better in a movie counterpart opposed to the series?
The first and most obvious example I'll cite is Goku's transformation to Super Saiya'jin in Movie 5. While the series presented the event very well, the movie approaches it in a slightly quickened, more elegant fashion, and somewhat mirrors the manga a little bit better. The musical cue (Japanese version, of course) with the organ after he transforms is just phenomenal.

I believe Goku resurrected a bird by transforming into a Super Saiyan in movie 5.
Goku Christ Superstar.

But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Movie 1 had the better "Gohan raging out" moment. I love that the animators made his pupils disappear like he was literally blinded with rage. And the screaming was phenomenal in the Japanese and Ocean dubs. Saffron Henderson really was fantastic as Gohan.
Movie 2 of course has the epic Kaio-Ken scream (Nozawa and Kelamis)
Movie 3 has the best Genki-Dama moment, mainly because the entire musical score for that scene (and for the entire film) was beautiful.
Movie 5 could actually tie into the continuity of the manga, which I liked. The SSJ transformation was really well done, but I ever so slightly prefer the TV series' version.
Movie 6 had a good ol' fashioned fisticuffs brawl (the scene with Gohan, Piccolo, and Kuririn fighting the robots), which isn't seen in DBZ too often. Movie 6 was also ahead of its time by featuring Goku and Vegeta teaming up, which you wouldn't see years later until the Buu arc.
Movie 8 has the best storyline and longest running time out of all the Z movies, so... that's got to count for something.
Movie 9 had a pretty fun tournament (way better than the tournaments in the Buu saga).
Movie 12 had wicked good humor, and the Fusions actually meant something other than being brushed aside like in the Buu arc.
Movie 13 felt like a better send-off to the Z series than the 28th Tenkaichi Budokai did. It had an epic battle, some generally touching moments, and a special vocal song to end things off.

Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

The theatrical budget given to the movies tends to allow better animation and coloring overall with portions meant to mimic the series and they end up looking better overall. Goku's Kaiouken against the electric green guy in Movie 2 and Gohan's SSj2 bit that mimics the killing of the Cell Juniors in the Bojack movie stand out in my mind as really great and sometimes I prefer them over the TV or manga versions.
I teeter on the edge about how I feel towards Gohan's transformation in the Anime compared to Movie 9. The Spirit vs Spirit scene is absolutely unforgettable and one of the best done scenes in the entire run of the series, but everything after that sort of falls apart in my mind. Movie 9 delivers the overall package of what I thought a straighter adaptation of the Manga would be like for that portion. And the music there is almost just as incredible.Kendamu wrote:The theatrical budget given to the movies tends to allow better animation and coloring overall with portions meant to mimic the series and they end up looking better overall. Wow, no love for the DBnotZ movies? Well, I guess I'll have to make up for that.
DB movie 1 was much darker and more realistic than any other part of the series. Overall, I think Gurumes was the better villain than Pilaf, though I think that everyone's favorite blue midget is the better character.
DB movie 2 was an interesting take on Muten Roshi's price for training, though, as always, the manga/anime was funnier. Oh yes, and it's devil character was much cooler than Devilman.
DB movie 3 had an interesting take on Chaozu that I very much enjoyed.
DB movie 4 had an all around more menacing Red Ribbon Army. Goku's first ride on Kinto'un was also much improved, along with the Yamucha fight. I didn't really like the rendition of the Roga Fufu Ken in this movie though.

Tenshinhan's presence and character development in Movie 3 is more convincing to me then how he went from bad to good in the Manga.

That was probably done better in the anime, with all the filler. If I remember right, the tournament took several days and there were lots of moments with Ten having an inner struggle.Duo wrote:Tenshinhan's presence and character development in Movie 3 is more convincing to me then how he went from bad to good in the Manga.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. Both the movie and anime renditions of Ten's change were much improved over the manga. Those little moments really fleshed him out as a character.Innagadadavida wrote:That was probably done better in the anime, with all the filler. Since I didn't watch most of the Dragonball movies I can't really remember any scene that was better than its anime counterpart. It also doesn't help that all the movies I've seen was from the English dub and not the original.
So I'm going to go with movie 12. Like Rocketman said, it was nice to see a Fusion work for once.

Well, the movies aren't that great when compared to the anime. But they can be good dumb fun at times. I thought Fusion Reborn (Movie 12) was pretty good for what it was. Which also shows a concept better than the anime.
Movie 12, Fusion Reborn, has a nice way to show what happens to the bad souls. In the anime they go to hell, which is filler and not in the manga. While in Movie 12 the bad souls are purified, which I believe is how it was described in canon material, correct? The movie has an interesting steam-punk looking machine doing it, which was of pretty nice design like other moments in the movie.

Movie 1. I thought Son Gohan's hidden power was conveyed better than in the manga because I felt that the Dead Zone scene was a more threatening situation than the Raditz scene, accompanied by the fact that I thought the "Gohan-rage-out" scene was cooler than in the Raditz scene.
Movie 2. Goku's Kaiô-Ken. I thought Goku going Kaioken was more dramatic than in the manga, because it gave you that explosive feel, especially when Goku broke out of the ice that entrapped him.
Movie 3. I liked the Genki-Dama in that one. Again, I felt it had more drama in it, especially in that final scene. I preferred Tullece's Genki-Dama moment to Vegeta's Genki-Dama moment. Plus, Yamcha & Tenshinhan got real moments to shine for once, in their battles with Tullece's henchmen.
Movie 5. Goku's Super Saiyan transformation. It had more of an impact on me.
Movie 6. Piccolo, Gohan & Kuririn battling the robots. It was a real, fast-paced fisticuffs battle that helped to maintain the energetic feel of DBZ. Goku & Vegeta teaming up to fight Coola was great as well--the two teaming up being conveyed that well is a rarity.
Movie 9. Gohan's SSJ2. I actually think the Bojack Unbound version & the Celll Games version are equal with each other. Both had their good points, but I simply can't choose one over the other.
Movie 12. Fusion. For reasons aforementioned.

I'm gonna go ahead and say Movie 12 was the best screen time Super Saiyan 3 Goku ever got, from an animation and choreography standpoint.
In Movie 3, I love how the last stand between Goku and Tullece plays out like an old-west duel. I really didn't notice it had that effect until my most recent viewing of it on the day of DB's 25 Anniversary.
On the flip side, I think Movie 4 has numerous moments that were completely inferior to series counterparts.

Yeah, I loved that moment. I don't get why movie 4 gets so much flak. Medamacha was awesome!Rocketman wrote:Movie 4 had the best Super Saiyan.
