Obscure question about Funimations Remastered DBZ DVDs

Post by IncredibleGuy » Sat Dec 12, 2009 3:03 am

Hey all, I remember a while back when Funimation's Remastered DVDs were being released somebody posted a topic regarding the way the English audio was structured on the DVD. I believe the gist of it was that the English audio track, Japanese BGM, and English BGM had all been isolated to seperate tracks as opposed to being merged together. Does anyone here know what I'm talking about and/or if this is true? And if so, can anybody tell me what program/s I need to rip these audio files on to my computer?

Thanks

I believe I understand what you are talking audio wise completely. It depends on what content you want however. It you mean the remastered box sets then yes, the FUNimation dub with Japanese music was a 5.1 surround track, meaning it contains 6 different and seperate tracks of sound storage. FUNimation now encodes all the dialouge and SFX onto the main channel with music, sfx and echoes into both the front and back left/right channels and the subwoofer with increases certain effects. People have been able to rip the unreleased music tracks from the later parts of the series by using the 5.1 surround sound and they could also do the same for the sound effects used.

But like I said, it depends what you want. I know the old UUE had their English Dub with their score in 5.1 but FUNi's older 5.1 releases weren't as good so I can't say of what quality it would be.

Yes, I am talking about the remastered boxsets. I have seasons one and six, and for my christmas break I thought it would be fun to tinker around with some of the video using Sony Vegas. Unfortunately, I'm pretty new to DVD ripping. So far, I've successfully ripped one DVD from Season One onto my harddrive using DVDFab 6, and converted part of the video using Handbrake. However, when it comes to audio and isolating tracks I'm pretty much at a loss.

My main goal, I guess, is to have one video file, and two audio files - one with music, one with dialogue - that I can put into Sony Vegas and play around with. Does this sound like something your familiar with?

(oh, and thanks for the timely response)

DVD ripping is very hard process for beginners but once you find the right software, it becomes a lot easier.

I've never used DVDFab 6 or Handbrake so I don't know how they work. However, I can tell you of what I use to create new content, though I can't provide an instant example of my work.

I use four main programs for rippping, DVD Decypter, VirtualDubMod, BeLight and Audicity. Now, if you want 5.1 surround sound, play the file in something like VLC (A fantastic video player) and see in it's audio options if it contains any 5.1 audio tracks (check each audio track included in your avi and then see what audio device each one has) before I continue to tell what to do.

5.1 was listed right next to one of the English audio options when I ripped it, so I'm sure its got 5.1 audio.
edit-
Yep, just checked it in VLC.

All right then. I would normally go through the whole process of ripping through DVD Decytper but if your program includes it, we won't need to.

For you to have files you can easily alter, we first need to extract the music track from the video file. You'll need VirtualDubMod for this. To get the audio track, you simply need to import the video file in, click on stream, then stream list, then demux the 6 channel audio. It should tell you in the stream list menu which one it is.

Then you'll need to use BeLight so you can access the individual tracks in programs like Audicity and Sony Vegas. You need to open the program, input the file in and select the WAV/PCM sub-tab. Since you want to import into Vegas, i'd recommend selecting 16 Bits (Six) Mono Wavs since it doesn't like a single 6 track WAV. You can also make the track the loudest possible volume for it if have Hybrid Grain turned on although that is up to you. Then you start encoding and once that is done, you'll have 6 tracks of the episode. The centeral one with vocals in ends in C while the Left and Right end in L and R.

I should also note while they say they are 768Kbps each since the source was a 448kbps at roughly 96kbps per mono track, it isn't. Considering mp3s only go up to 320, that shouldn't be a major worry though.

Here are zips of downloads for both programs. I should note that these two programs are freeware and can be technically posted anywhere. Here's VirtualDubMod and BeLight (click over them to access). I hope this helps!

Hmmm, we may not be on the same page here. When I go to open a video file in VDM it makes me pick from one of the VOB files in my TS_Video folder. Then after picking a file it says something to the effect of "3 seperate audio files have been found which one do you want to choose"? Furthermore, all the audio files look similar with the exception of their ending letters which go: 0x80, 0x81, and 0x82.

edit- Ok, so I found out that 0x80 is the stream I need. I loaded it into BeLight, and now its processing/transcoding. I'll tell how it turns out once its done. In the mean time can you tell me why I chose 16 bits instead of 32 bits?

edit 2 - Huzzah, it works! Thanks for your help. Now, I don't supppose there is anyway I can isolate the sound effects from the music.

Hmm, I seem to be running into a bit of a problem. My video and audio aren't synching up properly. If you don't mind can you tell me an alternative way of converting video since HandBreaker and BeLight don't wanna play nice together?

edit- Nevermind, I think I got it. I used DVD decrypter to demux the audio from the DVD and that cleared everything up. It looks like VDub was throwing the audio off.

Hate to bump this topic again, but can anybody tell me if Funimation stopped focusing their English dialogue to the center channel after the later seasons released? I ask because after demuxing, and transcoding sound from season six the center channel (as well as the left and right channels) had a fair amount of dialogue and music in them (which sucks for me).
