Star Trek V Reference in DBZ

Post by Gaffer Tape » Fri Jan 08, 2010 6:01 pm

Thanks to rewatching the series on the Dragon Box, I've found an interesting little nod to, what was then, the most recent Star Trek movie in a filler sequence in episode 22 of DBZ. Basically, an Enterprise shuttlecraft (with an NCC-1701-A marking) was one of the news vehicles destroyed by Nappa (original dub followers will remember this as the "cargo robot"). Since I've only been a Trek fan for a few years, this reference went unnoticed by me until a couple of months ago. It struck me so powerfully that I had to make a video to point this out.

I hope everyone here enjoys it! Has anyone else noticed this before? Heck, are there any other references to other works of fiction put into filler that anyone has noticed? Let this thread be a catchall for such things!

You noticed even the small serial number reference? I would never notice that. Not in a million years.

Well, speaking as a Star Trek fan, any one who is worth his (or her) salt would instantly be able to rattle off the serial number of any number of Enterprises. Thus, when it shows up, I think it probably does catch the eye, so maybe it's not that farfetched to catch it. I'd like to go back to my fansubs and see if I could easily notice it on that kind of quality tape, or if it really is just the majesty of the Dragon Box that allowed me to notice. I know I saw that episode at least once on the god-awful season set... Haha, maybe that part of the frame was cropped out, though! ^_~

I'm pretty sure I did. I could probably still list the serial numbers for any of the major ships in the show off the top of my head to this day.

Yes I'm a nerd.

Yeeeah I noticed that ages ago, and back when I had a DBZ site (also ages ago) I had a screenshot for it just because how cool it was. Still, it is an awesome spot. :)

Yep. As laserkid says, he has noticed this before. BUT, and this is a big but, has anyone ever made such a kick-ass video on the subject before?

...

That's what I thought. ^_^

Hey, it wasn't that bad! ...Okay, the whole plot with "God"-wannabe and Spock's 'not-quite-evil' brother sucked balls. Still, I did enjoy the interactions between the core characters. Kinda like the Super 17 arc in GT.

/OFF TOPIC ALERT/

Star Trek V, while a terrible film, is constantly on the verge of being good, it's really trying hard to do so, so it's not surprising to see that there's some enjoyment beyond the fact the movie's terrible.

/BACK ON TOPIC/

Still, this isn't actually a specifically Star Trek V refference, as the Shuttlecraft design is the same as it had been in the original series, and as admitted, the NCC 1701 A marker predates Star Trek V, to Star Trek IV. I'd call this a more general Trek refference then Final Frontier one.

Haha, someone on my video page made the same reference (was it you, laserkid?), and I'm still laughing my ass off over it since that line was probably my favorite one from the whole film.

As for it being only a general Trek reference, I still think it's directly related to Star Trek V for all the reasons I mentioned in my video, particularly the close proximity between the movie and the episode. It seems like it might have been just enough time for them to have seen the movie and throw in a reference. And, yeah, while it was in Star Trek IV, it was only very barely in that film, and I can see only the big Trek geeks making a big deal out of the new ship. It only first has any prominence until Star Trek V. Before that, the original NCC-1701 would surely be the more obvious reference, especially since no NCC-1701-A shuttlecrafts were seen in Star Trek IV. Again, yeah, like you said, the design is the same as from the series, but, in my opinion at least, all the specifics seem much more than just coincidence and much more likely a deliberate reference to a "hot" new movie. Hmm, I wonder if that film was more well-received in Japan than it was over here...?

There were many many years between IV (1986) and V(1989), and the A lettering had sunk in by then, because V was also after Star Trek TNG (1987) had begun with the Enterprise D, so well before The Final Frontier had gone out, MANY of us trek geeks were well familiar with the Enterprise A marking, even if it hadn't seen any onscreen action yet.

As for the comment, nah my youtube nicks laserkidprime so if it was me you'd know. :)

Haven't had a chance to pop in, and wanted to contribute more than just this, but I have to at least let you know how fucking awesome the video was. I know how difficult it can be to make videos for YouTube that point out this horribly inconsequential stuff that interests only a few people on this Earth... but it was amazing, and I want more.

And I don't even f-in' care about Star Trek in the least...!

I was the one who did that. It's a fairly obvious joke to make, though.

Nice find, and well done! I was actually ready to give you credit for correctly pronouncing "Saiyan" even before your blurb at the end. I'm having a hard time disciplining myself to use that pronunciation, but since I did stop pronouncing the name of Akira's protagonist as "kuh-NAY-duh," it can be done. ;)
