Dragon Ball Ranking

Post by Piccolo Daimao » Sat Jan 23, 2010 8:51 am

I know that a number of Dragon Ball fans here are also fans of other manga series. So, in terms of ranking, where would Dragon Ball go? Would it be in your Top 5 or Top 10?

Seeing as I don't take much of an interest in any manga/anime apart from Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball would be my number one.

Fluh... It's definitely in my top 5, but as to where? Maybe second or third, depending on how Bleach turns out, which will be a while. My all-time favorite manga is Konjiki no Gash!!, or Zatch Bell!.

As far as the anime goes, the original TV series is somewhere in my unorganized Top 10, Z doesn't rank in the slightest, and GT... I guess my unorganized Top 50? I never bother to rank anything I like, anime or otherwise, past 10. =/

Good on you, mate.

Dragon Ball...yeah, definitely in my top 10. Maybe top 5. I don't have any particular order to them, but there aren't many I think of as favorites I guess.

Dragon Ball, One Piece, 3x3 Eyes, Guyver, Gash Bell, Tenchi Muyo!, and Slayers are probably the ones that I can't see myself ever not loving. Although if we're strictly talking manga, I guess we can drop Tenchi Muyo! and Slayers from that list (there are manga of them, but they're not the parts of the franchise I love).

It'd have to be my number one, with One Piece right behind it.

History repeats itself.

And jeez. What is with all these people placing One Piece above Dragon Ball? One Piece is a fun show and everything but it's also the first term in the dictionary under synonyms for "derivative."

Number 1.

I'm having a hard time getting into newer anime series these days and out of all the ones I've seen in the past DBZ stands out above all the others.
...Wait what are you doing? Are you still reading this? I finished what I had to say, why don't you move on to the next post?

It would be number 1 for me. I have the same king of thing as Sparky.

Number one, followed by (in no particular order): Ikki Tousen, One Piece, Naruto and Saiyuki.

It's certainly my all-time favorite. However, I don't rank it amongst what I currently read because I have too much of a bias toward it for there to be a fair ranking.

Among the 40+ on-going manga and anime series and countless Western comic series I'm following...

This series is on a higher pedestal than all of them for me.

Honestly? It wouldn't rank.

I mean, yeah, Dragon Ball is loads of fun. But it's pretty low in my estimate when you compare it to my favorite manga/anime.

I mean, how is it supposed to compete with manga like 20th Century Boys, Fullmetal Alchemist, Gunsmith Cats, Trigun/Trigun Maximum, or even Lupin III?

And for anime? With Cowboy Bebop, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Bubblegum Crisis, Vision of Escaflowne, Big O, Giant Robo, Space Battleship Yamato, Spirited Away, FLCL, Patlabor, Macross Plus, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and the like, where do I put shows that go on forever and really have no value other than pure stupid fun?

You may ask, "Well, penguintruth, why do you argue so fervently about DB-related things if it isn't that important to you?" The answer is because even though it's not as good as the above titles, it's more significant to my anime fandom than the above titles, has had the most influence. It doesn't make it amazingly well done, it makes it a key to the door of my anime/manga fandom, and thus precious to me.

But in the long run, I doubt it would rank even in the top 30 of my favorite anime or top 10 manga.

Dragonball manga kind of fluctuates between the 8th and 4th spots for me. It switches places with One Piece depending on my mood. The anime proably ranks about 42nd because of how inconsistent and long it is. When I ask less hardcore DB fans where it ranks, they often say it's in their 20th-25th spots because it's too silly and paper thin, but for me, that's not really a weakness of the series, just one of it's distinguishing characteristics.
Stuff I Know About: Hellsing, Detective Conan, Macross, GaoGaiGar, Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon, Kaiji, Hetalia, Fullmetal Alchemist, Captain Harlock, Digimon, Berserk, Dragon Ball, One Piece, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Yu Yu Hakusho, Cyborg 009, Lupin III, Ultimate Muscle/Kinnikuman, Discworld, Avatar: The Last Airbender, TMNT, Futurama, Invader Zim, South Park, Sandman, Marvel, DC, Scott Pilgrim, Star Wars, Godzilla, Doctor Who, Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, Kingdom Hearts, and Sonic the Hedgehog

I'm not operating with absolutes, because I like more anime series and can't line them up in some poll, but Dragon Ball is obviously my most favourite with series like Uchuu Senkan Yamato, Saint Seiya, Captain Harlock, Mobile Suite Gundam first two series, Yu Yu Hakusho and Slayers.

What is also important for me in anime is background music and good dub work and original story...... For example, I really don't like the new Saint Seiya - Lost Canvas and If you listen to dub of DB Kai and DBZ in comparisson, it's on whole different level.

Dragonball the manga would be about #2, with Azumanga Daioh above it.

Dragonball the anime would pretty much be at the bottom, definitely below One Piece.

In both cases, though, I don't watch/read much anime or manga. I doubt I've even seen ten series.

Uh... One Piece isn't original, but Dragon Ball is? One Piece gets points over Dragon Ball for not introducing nonsense powerlevels, and having doctors that heal people using western medicine.

edit - whoops, didn't mean to single you out in both threads.

As for the topic, Dragon Ball would probably also rate second for me below One Piece

Dragonball is first, definitely. Followed by Claymore, then Naruto, then Berserk. OP Takes 5th, I suppose, on a pure manga list, since I've not read many of them. 7th on a manga/anime list as Monster takes 4, Kiba takes 5, and Berserk moves down to 6.

Wow, I'm really surprised by some of these results. I was expecting most people to rank Dragonball number #1.

Personally I have to remain devoted to the Dragonball series. It's certainly my number 1, although I do really enjoy Wolf's Rain. I think possibly that's number #2. As for other animes they are all pretty equal on my ranking scale. I'm not really into Naruto or Bleach despite watching a few episodes from my brother's DVD collection.

When we say Dragonball we are talking about the entire series right? Including Z and *coughs* GT  .

Anime wise, it's like on my top 25 or so. Manga wise, it's on my top 15 or 20 also.
