What other manga took inspiration from Dragon Ball?
What other manga, apart from Naruto, took their inspiration from Dragon Ball? I remember hearing something about One Piece taking inspiration from Dragon Ball, but can anyone confirm or dismiss this?

Oda has a huge love for Dragon Ball and Toriyama, so one can pretty much conclude that he was inspired by Dragon Ball for One Piece. Especially since quite a few people actually consider it to be the spiritual successor.
Naruto and Bleach are another pair where the mangaka drew inspiration from Dragon Ball in some manner.

YuYu Hakusho...? There are characters using Qi/Rei in many different ways... and they are having fighting tournaments...
Heck!! Nowadays, when you have a manga/anime with characters using spiritual energy in their attacks, and the main protagonist is blond or having a crazy spiky hair, with a big appetite, with fighting tournaments, with transformations...
Everyone says it's a Dragon ball Z ripoff!
Especially when it's from JUMP.

Well Part 4 of JJBA had some inspiration to the series since Koichi's final Stand and appearance was made to mimic Super Saiyan 2 Gohan's due to the fact that the middle of Part IV ran alongside the Cell Games portion of the Androids arc in Dragon Ball in the early 90's.

Re: What other manga took inspiration from Dragon Ball?
There are only 2 types of manga. Dragon Ball and everything else that is not Dragon Ball.
Re: What other manga took inspiration from Dragon Ball?
Now, when you say "inspiration," do you mean the author has explicitly stated he/she likes DB, or if there is some kind of reference/similarity to DB, or both? Because Dragon Ball is freaking legendary over thar in Japan. Tons of people, mangaka or not, hold some sort of love for it.
But, if you want specific examples, the beginning of Zetman, a seinen manga created by Toriyama's best friend, is a very interesting imitation of how Goku meets Bulma.

Are we just making conjecture here because Bleach is popular or Tite Kubo's contribution to LANDMARK? I ask because I've never seen anything supporting this besides the oft-repeated "Toriyama is the father of shounen."Tsukento wrote:Naruto and Bleach are another pair where the mangaka drew inspiration from Dragon Ball in some manner.

It's mainly because of the similarities between SSJ and Bankai. Beyond that, I really don't see why people compare those two series though.B wrote:Now, when you say "inspiration," do you mean the author has explicitly stated he/she likes DB, or if there is some kind of reference/similarity to DB, or both? Re: What other manga took inspiration from Dragon Ball?
If memory serves me right, he did grow up watching the series and Toriyama gave him some inspiration via a letter after the initial attempt to start Bleach was rejected (ironically because the editors felt it was too close to being like YuYu Hakusho).

Some people say One Piece but I really don't see a connection as much as other people do.
Yu Yu Hakusho has things in common with Dragon Ball but that may be because they both have mythological and spiritual roots.
Oh and by the way, Piccolo Daimao sure does create a lot of threads.

Re: What other manga took inspiration from Dragon Ball?
One Piece feels like having it's inspiration from the early Dragonball manga. All the adventures and the comradeship, all which were destroyed in an instant when Dragonball Z emerged.
Although gear 2 and gear 3 seem like being SSJ forms in their power addition.

Re: What other manga took inspiration from Dragon Ball?
Every Shounen Manga that ever came after it, and a good deal of the Seinen Manga too.
I remember in Tenjho Tenge, a VERY Hard Seinen Series, when Masataka fires a Ki blast and shoots Souichiro through a wall, he gets up laughing going "I didn't know there were people at this school who could do a Kamehameha!"
And Kouta Hirano of Hellsing fame is admittedly very influenced by DB, he even drew one of the Tribute images for the Kanzenban.
It actually might be easier to try to find a manga/manga author who WASNT influenced by DB than to try and catalog ALL of the Manga authors that were.

Think of it this way. What comics did Superman and Batman influence in America?Piccolo Daimao wrote:Wow...I never knew Dragon Ball was such an influential manga...LilKokuLink wrote:Well put.Scarz wrote:You mean besides every popular shounen manga that came after it?
Yeah, the same thing happened with DB and manga in Japan.

From what I've seen of One Piece it seems like Luffy and Goku have very similar personallities.

I mean, is there some kind of reference/similarity to Dragon Ball? Like with Naruto, can you see that perhaps, in the story, the author has been inspired somewhat by Dragon Ball?B wrote:Now, when you say "inspiration," do you mean the author has explicitly stated he/she likes DB, or if there is some kind of reference/similarity to DB, or both? Re: What other manga took inspiration from Dragon Ball?
For Naruto's case, it's quite a bit of things. The overall look of Uzumaki Naruto is pretty similar, mainly with the color scheme in the first part of the manga/anime and the yellow spikey hair. The rivalry of Naruto and Sasuke can be compared to Goku and Vegeta on a few points. The whole Chakra thing is similar to DB's ki, but it's probably a bit more in-depth. One thing I can say came blatantly from Dragonball though, was the name "Inoshikacho" that was a filler... monster thing in the Dragonball. In Naruto, it's some team attack name for Ino, Shikamaru, and Chouji.
Bleach is only similar in the fighting as far as I can tell. It's damn near DBZ+swords sometimes. "Shikai" and "Bankai" transformations, while are really just transformations of the characters sword's, are similar power-ups like Super Saiyan levels. A group of characters can also transform themselves called "Hollowfication" which they get a power boost from these inner-demon type of things, and this is signified by masks they get. There's also a lot of flying, and reiatsu (Bleach's ki) blasts and attacks.
One Piece from what I've seen so far, really captures the fun and hilariousness of the original series, while still having some awesome fighting in it; it's the overall feeling rather than blatent copying in it's style. The main character, Luffy, is also just as clueless and naive as Goku is, but still gets super serious when it's necessary. What I'm wondering about though (and too lazy to go check) is which came first: Naruto's dream to become the Hokage or Luffy's dream to become the Pirate King?
I'm only about 50 episodes in, so I can't really give a definite opinion on it, but I enjoy it enough to keep watching.
All three are incredibly similar overall, but they're quite different enough to be their own successes. Otherwise no one would watch/read them because they'd just be labeled "ripoffs of Dragonball." Especially One Piece. I think I read that it's the most successful manga in Japan, like... ever?
I forget. But I know it's usually always beating DB Kai in the ratings.

While I can't look up the information right now, I have a gut feeling this is a coincidence and not Kishimoto riffing off of DB.nathantheguitarist wrote:One thing I can say came blatantly from Dragonball though, was the name "Inoshikacho" that was a filler... monster thing in the Dragonball. If you can find the info, post it! I'm just making an assumption on that one. I'd like to ride on it as fact though since the name "Inoshikacho" just seems like something hard to contrive out of coincidence.B wrote:While I can't look up the information right now, I have a gut feeling this is a coincidence and not Kishimoto riffing off of DB.nathantheguitarist wrote:One thing I can say came blatantly from Dragonball though, was the name "Inoshikacho" that was a filler... monster thing in the Dragonball.
