Haha, see? The fact that it's not DBZ is what makes me want it properly all the more since I prefer the earlier stuff. That, and I am spoiled by the DBox release that I won't settle for anything less anymore. Honestly, I would have considered it if not for the title card problems. That's actually enough to keep me from wanting them. I also really want the next episode previews. And, finally, I did finally cave at one point and get the first two DBZ seasons relatively cheap, even though I felt so dirty. But it did teach me never to buy any more of these season releases from them again. In the meantime, I'll just do what I can economically to help the DBox series become a success so that we'll hopefully get the others released.Tanooki Kuribo wrote:I doubt we'll get a DragonBall DragonBox but, I guess you can wait.Oh, wow. They zoomed that in more than I thought. I'm holding out for a DB Dragon Box
Are people really that torn over this? I don't know, it might just be me, it really don't bother me that much. Maybe cause it's not DragonBall Z...

Oops. I didn't mean for it to come across as a quality comparison. I was just trying to show that the zoom level is nothing new. I realize that the Saga of Goku set is irrelevant.VegettoEX wrote:As for the discussion at hand, I don't think it's worth it to compare "Season One" to any release of "The Saga of Goku" due to the PAL conversion that went on with the Australian release... and the original R1 release is just pointless to use as a reference. I'd also like to toss out that, amazingly, many (though not all) of the original 2-disc sets had single layer discs with lots of episodes on them... and that was back before their compression took a jump up.
Re: How does the remastering look on the Dragon Ball Blue Boxes
If you're going to wait for a DragonBall DBox for the sake of being able to see just a little bit more dirt around Goku's feet... I guess that's your call. But be prepared to wait for a very long time.

The only thing that will actually be better in the DBOX release is of course the dragon book and better packaging but I'd still prefer the remastered video to dbox IF all the footage was there.Kaboom wrote:If you're going to wait for a DragonBall DBox for the sake of being able to see just a little bit more dirt around Goku's feet... Re: How does the remastering look on the Dragon Ball Blue Boxes
For what they are, the Blue Bricks are extremely nice. I Always find the "Dragonbox to [whatever]" comparisons to compare one 4:3 shot to another 4:3 shot is kinda unfair to [whatever]. The Dragonbox is supposed to be the best print in existence. They took what was already their greatest print and then they fixed it up to make it nearly perfect. Anything else that anyone else gets isn't going to look as good because they didn't get the best print nor did they get a remastered version of the best print.
The Blue Bricks are a somewhat cleaned up version of what we should expect from a multi-generational print of a TV show from the mid-1980s. Sure, they took it a bit too far with their first attempt (DBZ) and that we wouldn't have had nearly as much of a problem if the Orange Bricks looked more like the Blue or Green ones (depending on the story Arc in question), but that's a completely different matter.
The Blue Bricks are really nice considering what they are and are a good product if you're not looking for the absolute best version on Earth. If you are, then I suggest gett the JP DBox or hassling FUNimation until they give us the Dragonball DBox.

I still have my doubts that toei did not use the best print because it could have been in an air tight vault, you get the gist from here. The colors from the original air date and the dboxs is just to distinct in the first arc, but is dead on during the namek/freeza arc.Kendamu wrote:For what they are, the Blue Bricks are extremely nice. Okay, what if both had the same view in their 4:3 box would you still say dbox is better?
Re: How does the remastering look on the Dragon Ball Blue Boxes
No. The DragonBox has other advantages over the Season Sets that any hypothetical FUNiBox of the series would carry over much like for DBZ.Daimo-Rukiri wrote:Okay, what if both had the same view in their 4:3 box would you still say dbox is better?
But... such a release doesn't exist. At least not yet, and there's been zero hints that there will be one. My advice is not to miss out on something really good for the very slim chance of something that only might happen.

Yeah, that post of mine was pretty rude in retrospect and definitely needless. Sorry about that. (Though, just to clarify, I wasn't bashing this thread in the least. I like it.)
As for the Dragon Ball Dragon Box, I'm banking on there not being an English release. I don't think even the DBZ Dragon Box is that profitable a venture, and it's obviously the much more popular series in the US.

Let me further clarify: The Dragonbox is the very best print that we, the public, can purchase.Daimo-Rukiri wrote:I still have my doubts that toei did not use the best print because it could have been in an air tight vault, you get the gist from here.
I'll stick to what I said before: Dragonbox, no contest. Again, I say that it's unfair to say, "Oh, well, the Blue Bricks aren't as good as the Dragonbox so they suck." Can we compare them? Sure! Just don't mistake the Blue Bricks for a bad product because it's not as good as the best product there is.Okay, what if both had the same view in their 4:3 box would you still say dbox is better?
Re: How does the remastering look on the Dragon Ball Blue Boxes
I started this topic just to see if I should buy Dragon Ball Blue boxes now or wait for the Dragon Box version. I hate double dipping with DVD's, I have a few of the original Dragon Ball DVD's, but not all of them. So I decided after all these re-release that Funimation likes to do with Dragon Ball series' that I would be better served if I just waited out these latest "Remasters" and saw what was coming out next. Also, while the domestic Dragon Box Z's may not be lighting up the charts as far as sales goes, (I haven't seen actual figures, so I don't know) it still leave the door open for the Dragon Box version of the original series to be released domestically. So seeing as that might be the case, it would be silly of me to buy the Dragon Ball Blue Bricks knowing that in the not too distant future a better version might be coming out. I appreciate what Funimation is trying to do with the material Toei provided them about a decade ago, but that doesn't mean I have to buy it. Especially if they did something like crop off the damaged part of the print.

Re: How does the remastering look on the Dragon Ball Blue Boxes
There is one thing that is being overlooked by many here. Regardless of the actual video/sound quality and the framing, the blue bricks do not contain what I am personally waiting for:
The complete package!
Just as the Dragon Box Z sets contain, I want all of the original Japanese openings, closings, title cards, recaps, next episode previews, and the eye-catches! That's a lot to offer outside of the video presentation. So when comparing the two, do not overlook what the blue bricks do NOT have. In my personal opinion, framing aside, I prefer the look of the Dragon Box. However, that is not to say that the blue bricks aren't nice-looking. The whole thing is subjective and entirely up to the individual.

Ah forgot to put that in my post about the original Japanese openings, closings, title cards, recaps, next episode previews. Thanks for the reminder.

Re: How does the remastering look on the Dragon Ball Blue Boxes
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Funimation never actually had all of the footage, right? I know none of the DVD releases to date had next episode previews, but for Dragon Ball (unlike DBZ), it wasn't just laziness; it was that they actually don't have it. So I guess that means that the only way we ever get all of that material is if a Dragon Ball Dragonbox eventually comes around.Mountain wrote:There is one thing that is being overlooked by many here. On another point, no one ever answered Jon Jon's question: does anyone actually know how well the Dragonboxes are selling? My guess is that they're not doing too well since they really only cater to a smaller fanbase (the larger domestic fanbase owns and is content with the Orange Bricks). This is somewhat substantiated, albeit circumstantially, by the fact that the prices for these sets are much lower now than they were originally. To reduce the price, Funimation is probably simply printing fewer of them because the first one didn't sell all that well. Then again, it could have sold great. Anyone know?
Re: How does the remastering look on the Dragon Ball Blue Boxes
To me... I like how the blue bricks look. I think they came out fine and I probably will purchase these later on. I don't see how people can really complain. This is better then having no Dragon Ball at all!
Anyway... I hear a lot of people saying, "Well there is no news from Funimation about if they will release a Dragon Ball Dragon Box yet."
Well you can just use common sense to see why Funimation wouldn't want people to know they are releasing it if they do get it.
Funimation wants money, so they would obviously wait for all the blue bricks to be out, and for a few more months after that to make sure they were selling, before releasing news about a Dragon Ball Dragon Box.
Of course they wouldn't say it while they're still releasing these... then they wouldn't sell...

Re: How does the remastering look on the Dragon Ball Blue Boxes
Hmm... focusing on just the comparison images in this thread for now. They seem to crop a little too much for my liking. Personally, I think I'll just wait and see whether or not FUNi gets to release the Dragon Boxes for this part of the series. If they do, awesome. But if not... well, I can probably track down these releases on my own at that time and swallow my complaints about the cropping then.
It'd probably be even cheaper by then, anyway, which would be great for me, broke college student that I am.

Re: How does the remastering look on the Dragon Ball Blue Boxes
You know, from the issue of the whole "Zoomed-In" issue, does anyone else think that it's a Toei issue?
As in, that's the only print FUNi has of the show? Because, yes; look at the Saga of Goku screen.. it's the same Zoomed-In frame.
Plus, isn't Toei notorious for giving out bad prints of their shows? I don't honestly think it's a FUNimation thing at work here, and compare and contrast?
Comparing the Blue Brick Remastering with the Dragon Box?
As they say, the Dragon Box is the best print of the show in existence, to my eyes the Blue Brick is the 2nd best.
All in all? Thank god FUNimation learned how to proper use their Video transfer system and remastering equipment correct.
I did notice a lack of Next Episode previews, but that too is likely a Toei issue.

Re: How does the remastering look on the Dragon Ball Blue Boxes
I'll just do my best in supporting the Dragon Box releases. I'll worry about whether or not FUNimation will release the DB Dragon Boxes after all the other DBZ Dragon Boxes are released. If not, I can settle for the blue bricks. By then, they'll be significantly cheaper.
