Is Trunks any good with a sword?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Is Trunks any good with a sword?

Post by Dayspring » Mon Feb 15, 2010 11:05 pm

Sure he can swing a sword, but he never has any dueling or fencing battles, so I was wondering if there's any source (Daizenshuu comment or other) that mentions if he's any good with his sword or if he's just treating it like a cleaver.

He was good enough to kill Frieza with it......and "our timeline Trunks" started a sword school.

Well since Trunks spent a lot of time with Tapion, maybe he taught Trunks the art of swordplay off screen.

Even if Tapion mattered to the canon, that short amount of time wouldn't serve fruitful to teach someone the art of swordsmanship.

Well... the issue is: where did Trunks get the sword? If Tapion is non-canon, we cannot really use that storyline as a source. That would be the biggest factor in determining his potential proficiency with it. Btw: I love how big the sword gets when King Cold wields it.

Anybody could kill Freeza with that sword if they were as powerful as Trunks.

Trunks probably could have cut him in half without the sword. The sword just makes it cooler.

I think he basically uses it as a sledgehammer. He doesn't seem to use any particular sword technique or stances that I have ever seen. He really didn't need it anyway.

He looks kinda skilled when he slices Freeza into tiny bits, and since he seems to rely on it (in the movie special and against C17 and C18 in the manga), I guess that he can use it with enough skill for him to have a greater advantage when fighting.
I mean, try to cut a carrot with a kitchen knife. It takes some practice to be able to cut it fast and precise into equal bits.

He's good enough that he can toss the sword into the air and catch it in its sheath, which is still completely strapped to his back, on the way back down.

I don't know... maybe he got his mad skills with a sword from his grandfather! You gotta believe that it would be freaking awesome to see Dr. Briefs kicking ass with a sword.

I think it's kind of the same as if a regular human brings a baseball bat into a fight. He doesn't have to have any particular skill with it to inflict great damage.

I think when it comes to who's the better swordsman, our forgotten pudgy samurai friend Yajirobe would take the cake (no pun intended).

Hypothetically, if Trunks were not a powerful Saiyan and just a human with a sword with no fighting skills, then Yajirobe would be superior in battle. But of course, Trunks is an elephant compared to an ant when it comes to Yajirobe, but I'm just saying sword-skilled wise, Yajirobe is better.
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Yeah Trunks needs it about as much as Gohan did.

I assume that Trunks may not have ever had any dueling or fencing battles, but it is possible that he trained with the sword.

I think Trunks is somewhat skilled at swordplay, at the least. Why do you think he use it as his main weapon, and find it effective to use in battle?

There have been many theories and fanfics on this particular topic, and no-one has gotten any closer to finding out the true answer. We know, for obvious reasons, that it couldn't have been Tapion that gave him the sword. Maybe Bulma carved it for him. Maybe it's just a random sword Trunks picked up one day. We just don't know.

Nay, it certainly could have been Tapion. He and/or Hoi could have shown up in Trunks' timeline too, even if under drastically different circumstances.

Oh yes, that is a possibility.

Whether it's just my brain being weird or it's actually just another a fan theory, but I have heard things like Trunks' sword being "a gift from the gods". Which seems extremely unlikely to be, since the gods tend not to meddle in insignificant (at least to them) planets' affairs, let alone just decide to drop a sword from the heavens to help out some kid fend off a bunch of cyborgs destroying his planet.

Or maybe Kaiô-sama was drunk again...

True. But on the same token, we don't know if Trunks had the sword prior, and only started using it after Gohan's death.

IMO, sometimes a weapon seems to be a symbol of master/student relationships in DB. Even if the are used only once in some cases. For example Roshi passed the staff to Gohan, who passed it on to Goku.

When Piccolo trained Gohan he gave Gohan a sword. We know future Trunks was trained by Gohan. The scene where Gohan kicks Trunks in the water is reminiscent of Piccolo throwing Gohan in the water that time. To some degree, I feel that Gohan's death was a parallel to Piccolo's as far as the master/student relationship goes.

To me, I don't see it so much a stretch that at some point Gohan gave Trunks a sword to train with. It explains (to me) why he grabs it when he goes to fight the androids. It had sentimental value to him. While you may not agree with my theory, it is just my opinion.

Also, the sword being enchanted and particularly effective against Hildergarns doesn't make it anything special against Androids.
