Blue Brick Questions

Post by Spike_86 » Tue Feb 16, 2010 6:59 pm

I was curious if Funimation's Blue Brick's have the following....

*proper openings & endings
*last episode and next episode previews

Also I was curious to the opinion's of those whom own or have seen the Blue fella's to see if it is worth getting them after already owning the Madman big set's?

The opening and the ending are the proper ones.
They have the last episode preview but not the next episode previews. I think the Dragonball Dragon Box only had the next episode previews.

IMO, I wouldn't double dip on the blue bricks if you own the 2-disc sets. Save your money for DBZ DBoxes and DBKai if you plan to buy them and hope for a Dragon Ball Dragon Box in the future.

They have the right song, but there are variations of the opening and ending animations that are missing. So it's not exactly what I would call "proper" in this case.

To bad they aren't dubbed.

I already own the whole series (including the Madman Saga of Goku set), but I'm picking these up as they release. They aren't too expensive if you can catch a sale online, and the video quality is substantially improved. They also have the dub in 5.0 surround, though it doesn't impact it all that much. If you're a big collector of these sorts of things, the Blue Bricks are quality products. If you want the best, wait and see if Funimation gets the Dragon Box releases for Dragon Ball.

Just know that except for the video/audio quality and the Marathon feature, these sets are identical to the originals in almost every other way (the only additional difference I think I noticed is that insert song lyrics appear at the top of the screen instead of the bottom when you have the Japanese subs on).

The Blue Bricks do not have the proper* opening/ending sequences, no credits, and no previews. And the episode titles are forced English; no Japanese text.

*Technically, they have the "appropriate" opening and ending sequence only for a certain section of episodes. While the opening and closing themes never change, there are two different opening animations, and FOUR ending animations. You only get one of each, and it plays for the entire series. Another reason to wait for a possible Dragon Box.

The OP never mentioned he was looking for Dub sets.

Hmmm seems waiting for a possible DB Dbox would be far more beneficial than just getting a slight clean up of video. Thanks everyone for the info!

Ugh, can someone explain to me why they're still doing crap like this?

I heard rumors that they got rid of alternative angles because dub fans hated seeing the little camera in the corner. I...really hope that isn't true.

If that's true I'm gonna have to choke someone, that's really fucking easy to deal with...

Also the opening and endings aren't the right ones, it's still just opening 1 and ending 2. Another reason I'm holding out for Dragon Boxes.

It was that, along with fans complaining about the video quality dropping in alternate angle areas.
GT is underrated and the International Channel will always be my favorite channel for foreign programming. I still miss it.

Why single out the dub fans? The only time I ever found the angle display to be annoying (and, in the case of my DVD player, it was a rather obstructive box reading "ANGLE") is when it sat on the screen for nearly half of the episode. I only recall this ever happening once, during an episode of Fullmetal Alchemist. As a dub fan, when it comes to title cards and credits, multiple angles don't bother me in the slightest and, yes, I did notice when they suddenly disappeared and wondered what the deal was.

Sadly, the DragonBall Season Boxsets retain the same exact thing as the old 2-disc sets. The first opening animation of "Mystical Adventure! is used, and the second animation of "I'll Give You Romance". The recaps are infact there, and they always have been. Once again, the next episode previews are not included on the sets.

They no longer use alternate angles, which is an absolute shame. Not all DVD players display a little camera icon, and it can usually be turned off. FUNi's use of alternate angles on an anime DVD right from the start with DBZ was truly groundbreaking, and their use of angles on their releases of other series made viewing them a real treat, as you could easily choose whether you wanted English titles or the original Japanese titles and credits.

Complaining about the little camera popping up is like complaining about a "Welcome" menu starting up every time you log onto a messenger. There are usually ways to disable it and not all do it.

That has to be the worst excuse I've heard. With stuff like One Piece, I don't mind the loss of alternate angles since the episode titles are faithfully translated and the font matches the original. However, with the DB series, the Dragon Balls tend to be moved about, the titles are different and Dragon Ball's title tended to be thrown in as well as if we forgot what we were tuning in to.

I've heard that the actual problem with the alternate angles was encoding problems. They're apparently what caused the overall bitrate and quality to be so low on FUNi's DVDs over the years. From what I understand, there is a "better" way to do angles that won't have that problem, but instead of trying that, they instead decided to drop angles entirely.

Personally, I'd take shit quality over the replacement of all the Japanese text any day. I just hope they don't do the same thing for Blu-rays, because angle technology on Blu-ray is supposed to be much, much better. Does anyone know if they kept anything in the DBZ movie Blu-rays, or was it just all English?

I figured the overall problem from the encoding issues was the result of slapping a ton of episodes on each disc. Not to mention, the masters FUNi has had weren't the best of quality to begin with.

I was pretty much quoting the rumor I heard verbatim.
