Yup, I have to go with Laserkid on this one. Even though the Japanese will always be the TRUE voices, and the ones I love, I have grown kind of fond of the FUNi voices, mainly through the Budokai games.

And he's right, many of the lines are bad. And the music kills it, mainly on GT where watching a single episode is damn near unbearable. I've yet to make it through the first commercial break. *hugs GT DVD collection*

I've long believed that if they just got the original soundtrack, and had more accurate dub lines I'd love the show dubbed - heck I almost always watch "Dragon Ball" dubbed due to the original music (I'll admitt it, in most cases I love english dubs, DBZ is the exception to that).

I completely agree with you laser kid. The majority of the voices in the english dub ARE good. Many of them are perfectly suited to their characters (although there is the occasional one that just makes you shudder). More or less the problem is the dub script.

And yeah, the music in DBZ was OK for me... for the first season. But the fact that they used the same 10 oer so songs for the entire duration of the show, without remixing them in any way, REALLY got annoying. There were very few new songs added in during the show from the beginning (the only one I can think of is Cell's theme, which is used a couple times). But there really is no doubt that the original version had the better score.

Thank goodness DB kept the original score. Goku's theme is simply awesome, as is Piccolo's.

You've obviously never heard the Blue Waters dub cast.

You're joking about that last line right? :x

Speaking of good ol' Pic, I agree with your (tealsmith) statement that you made earlier. As good as the voice actor is, he doesn't suit Piccolo's appearance as well as Sabat does. If you saw him in in real life then you'd understand. Piccolo is a giant green demon with fangs, pointed ears, pointed nose, things hanging from his head, multi-colored arms, sharp black fingernails, moccasins, four to five fingers, and to top it all off...no eyebrows. So, whose voice would you expect to fly out?

Man. Really. How many green demon-giants would you expect to sound like your biology professor?

So your biology professor is a Japanese man that teaches in Japanese? :P Seriously though, I don't think he sounds at all like that. His voice is one of my favourites in the series. I think he has a very attractive and commanding voice and he can do some incredible screams. Just listen to his opening yell at the beginning of The Dead Zone. And he does a great evil Piccolo laugh. Plus Furukawa seemed to add a touch of savagery to Piccolo that no other VA has done. There were times when especially during the Freeza saga, that Sabat had Piccolo sounding like a street thug. He got better, but I will always think Furukawa is better. That's my opinion, just as you thinking he sounds like a biology professor is your opinion. And anyway, it's not as if there's some all-knowing wiseman out there that can say what a green demon should sound like. :P

And no tealsmith, that doesn't make you a bad person. That just makes you deaf. :P Just joking. As I said above, we're all entitled to our opinion. I was only teasing you.^^

I know :P

But I do recognize that for the most part, the Japanese voice acting is much superior. I remember the first time I ever saw any original DBZ footage, it was Gohan's SSJ2 transformation. Wow. What a difference from the dub. The voices were much more 'into it', and the scene itself was very different. I remember being absolutely amazed by whoever voiced Gohan - whoever it was just let it loose in that scene, put his/her dub counter-part to shame :P

Why is it that because Piccolo's skin is green you expect him to sound like a monster?

The one thing I hate most about the dub is that they make everyone sound so TOUGH. I'm watching an anime, not the fucking WWF. Jesus.

An anime where the main characters beat the crap out of each other on a daily basis.

That's one of my biggest problems with the JPN version (aside from it being in Japanese :P ). I don't like how several characters sound like little kids. DBZ Goku in particular.

I believe in the original version, Goku is voiced by a woman, isn't he? Correct me if I'm wrong on that.

Anyways, I don't think that Piccolo should sound like a monster because his skin his green. I think he should sound like a monster because he's the genetic duplicate of the DEMON KING. When I think of a demon, I think of it as having a somewhat powerful and menacing voice :P

I'm not a big fan of Chris Sabat's Piccolo, although I did really like Scott McNeil's Piccolo (even though it was so similar to his Wolverine voice).

Either way, I still like Toshio Furukawa's Piccolo is the best, simply because I feel he gives the best performance. He has an excellent range of emotions, not to mention he can severely alter his voice at any given moment (his vocal range is incredible). Plus, every now and then when Piccolo's character gets tense or freaked out, Furukawa will pull out his old Ataru Moroboshi voice, which simply kicks ass (his best work ever, IMO). :P

Oh cool! Another Urusei Yatsura fan!^^ Ya if people actually heard Furukawa's voice in that series, they'd be amazed at his range. A lot of the DB actors have amazing range. That's why the acting for scenes is better. A lot of them were all veterans. McNeil's Piccolo was okay, but I thought he made him sound even more thuggish than Sabat!

Gohan's voice was done by Masako Nozawa too by the way. And I'll argue forever that even though she's a woman, she did an excellent job and the best at playing Goku. It's just that some people can't get past the fact that they're listening to a female. I've seen people who were totally against it at first and said they couldn't get used to the voice, but after a while, they did and forgot that it even was a woman, because Nozawa played the role so well.

And just because a show is about physical combat, doesn't mean it has to sound like the WWF, Rocketman. That in my opinion is a baseless assumption. It's why movies like Mortal Kombat drive me up the wall whenever the characters open their mouths! They sound like emotionless robots! You don't even care about what happens to them. Do you think everyone in my Tae Kwon Do class, myself included talk like we just stepped out of the ring with The Rock?

This might just be me, but I liked Mr. Sabat's evil Piccolo at the end of DB more than his good Piccolo from DBZ. The same feeling is for King Piccolo. Both characters were on mark, evil and ruthless.

I don't mean to jump on any dub-hating band wagon or anything, but I have to agree with what people are saying about Sabat's voice-overs in particular. It's hard to explain, but it seems like every role he does, he tries to make that character a stereotype. Vegeta always sounds like a rabid dog with throat cancer, rather than the cool, intelligent, Prince of the saiyans.

McNeil may sound like a thug, but at least he sounds like a thug with a good voice, unlike a certain Mr. Sabat

Sabat can suck (I do NOT like his Vegeta OR Kuwabara)

Myself, I prefer his Kuwabara to the Japanese actor's voice. It fits the character in my opinion.
