What to buy? Suggestions?

Post by LilLinks Sasha » Sun Feb 14, 2010 1:07 pm

Heya everyone, I've got some money left over from my birthday and I'm stuck on what I want to buy. I want something dragonball related but since there's so much merchandise I'm stuck thinking of what to get! I could really use some of your help, here's a list to help you so that you can help me :D ^^

- No DVD's. I've got both the DBoxes which my parents are buying for me as they come out. (Well... they're fans too >.> but they're still mine :D).
- Manga, I've got some of the old volumes of the original DB, are there any newer and better releases?
- Figures/Toys, I own just a few so does anyone know if there are any particular collections that are good? Not just singular figures but some of those really cool collections like roshi sitting on top of a dragonball, those kind of stuff.
- Daizenshuu books! I don't own any of these, are they only available in Japanese or are there translated versions? How many are there?
- Random stuff, I've got a few keychains and stuff etc. What other interesting things are there?

Sorry for all the questions and stuff but I'd really like to know and I'm sure some other people may find out about some cool merchandise here. I live in England so delivery may be a pain but we'll see, I have around £70 so I may not be able to complete some collections but I'd like to see which collections I can start :D

Thank youu! ^^

Manga wise: There are the VizBIG editions being released... someone will come by here and explain the released ones and the future releases, because I don't know them. Difference from the original Viz run to these VizBIG's are that they fit more chapters in these, and there is a bit more censoring, but the censoring is consistent (as in less random "WTF" censoring) also they're cheaper than getting all the old ones.

Daizenshuu wise: The only one that got a domestic release is Daizenshuu #1, which is called "The Complete Illustrations" here in the U.S.. This was also released by Viz. I got mine at Barnes and Nobles for around $25 U.S.. As for the others being translated, nothing has been confirmed. You might as well find eBay auctions that are selling the rest (in Japanese of course).

Hope I helped. :)

I think Tom Dubois of "The Boondocks" said it best for me when FUNimation announced the release of the domestic Dragonbox, after buying all of the Season Sets: "MOTHERFUCK!!! SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT, PRICKS, SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIIIIIIIT!"

The Daizenshuu (save 1) may be Japanese-only, but they're wonderful books and I love owning them. You want more image-heavy ones, look for 3 and 5, the TV guides. My personal favorites are 2 and 4, because even not being able to read Japanese the amount of info one can get from them is extraordinary. Accent on 4, because the world map is my favorite thing in all of the daizenshuu ^___^ I don't have 6+ unfortunately so I can't give feedback on those >_>

The funnest thing to do however is to just put "dragonball" in ebay, list by lowest price, and see what crazy shit shows itself.

There isn`t more censoring in the Vizbigs than in all previous editions. There is more censoring than some previous editions and there is less censoring than some previous editions. So it depends.

Besides that, they are superior to previous editions pretty much in every single way.

The VizBig editions for the series are great if you can get a hold of them. Color pages, high-quality paper and printing, a lot of content for a relatively low price... They're not perfect (not ALL the color is retained, and there's still some slight censorship), but they're still quite nice, and probably the closest anyone's going to get to English Kanzenban editions for the foreseeable future.
- Figures/Toys, I own just a few so does anyone know if there are any particular collections that are good? Not just singular figures but some of those really cool collections like roshi sitting on top of a dragonball, those kind of stuff.
There's a few cheap action figures and other toys circulating around my area in Toys R Us and the like (Even some DBE figures still lingering around), but none of them strike me as really of "collectible" quality, unless you're a "get everything for the sake of getting everything" type of fan. Anime Conventions are the best place to find the good-quality and imported figurines.
- Daizenshuu books! I don't own any of these, are they only available in Japanese or are there translated versions? How many are there?
Viz has done a perfect release the first Daizenshu, and if you love art books like I do, then it's a must-have (I like to take it out on occasion, and just sit there and fondle it gently as I rock back and forth). In my honest opinion, the time, money, and effort required to get any of the others probably aren't worth it unless you can read Japanese or just intend to get the other art-centric ones and stare at the pretty pictures.
- Random stuff, I've got a few keychains and stuff etc. What other interesting things are there?
I've seen some DragonBall-related odds and ends at places like Hot Topic and FYE. But your results (and stores) may vary in the UK.

Hehe

It sometimes sucks living in the UK, there are not many anime conventions around here but I think I'm going to look into that ^^.
Thank you :) xx
