Dragag ball

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Dragag ball

I always heard that Dragonball was a gag manga but it really never made me laugh, I never really thought Toriyama was a comedian, he's a great story teller though.

In what sence was Dragonball a gag manga.

Read Dr. Slump and try telling me again he's not a comedian. =D(Or a comic genius at that)
Especially early on DB was more about laughs than it was about fights. Toriyama would throw Son Goku's innocence and aloofness into some situation which should induce a chuckle every so often.
I'll never be able to forget "The b-b-b-balls are g-g-gone" for one. XD

A lot of the humor comes from the expressions on the characters' faces (at least that's what makes me laugh). One of my favorites is when Goku first introduces Gohan to Kuririn, Bulma and Kame Sennin ("G-Goku no ko?!").

Originally it was only supposed to be two sagas long parodying the Monkey King fairy tale. The first saga parodies the tale quite a bit, but by the time Toriyama finished it, Dragonball reached a huge fanbase and so he took it in another direction.

Dr. Slump was created by Akira Toryama? Crud, I never knew that, no wonder it looked so much like the early DB style.

And no wonder the characters made an appearance in Dragon Ball.

Of course it's a "gag" manga. Just watch/read the craziness of early DB. Of course, by the time Piccolo was introduced, the manga started taking on a somewhat more serious tone, solidified in the Saiyan story arc.

Dayspring is right. The correct answer is that it was a parody of "Journey to the West".
