Piccolo Daimaoh, all I'm reading from you is, "You're not echoing my own opinions about the dub back at me, so I'm going to dive into literal meanings of words as a last-ditch effort to prove something!" (though that's not to say that I'm not seeing penguintruth purposefully provoking).

It's not working. There's nothing for you to prove. It didn't work with your false explanations of romanziations, and it doesn't work here. Please stop. No-one is under any obligation to sugar-coat their feelings and preferences just to satisfy someone else's insecurities.

No additional, personal back-and-forths of this nature will be tolerated by any other members in this thread. Get off your semantics high-horse and get back to genuine discussion.

Can't say I'm all that interested by this, since I've little interest in DB Kai to begin with. But, the prospect of an improved dub is intriguing.

Any word on how Sabat plans to handle Vegeta and Piccolo? Will he tone down the scratchiness for Vegeta for example, will it be a little closer to the original voice, what kind of inflection/tone etc. will he use? He does appear to be very dedicated to the project, and if he's taking it seriously, surely there will be (at least minor) changes made to the way in which he voices his characters too.
In a nutshell: Likes the sub and the dub and barely ever posts.

So far nothing has been mentioned, but I hope that Vegeta will sound arrogent and full of himself. And that Kaioh will not sound so literally stupid. Also, does anyone think Gokuh will sound like a county bumbkin this time around? If the script is supposed to be accurate, then there's a chance of that, right?

That's your opinion. We don't really know the other possible kid Goku voice actors FUNimation had. Nadolny was chosen because FUNimation thought she was the best.
Sorry. What I meant was that "there is no best", and also that they wouldn't've been cast as those characters had FUNi had a decent amount of actors to choose from. What other show by FUNi has one guy doing so many main characters?

Doesn't Vegeta pretty much always sound arrogant?

I just remember him sounding constantly angry in the English dub.

That's why I liked Brian Drummond's Vegeta. As "cartoonish" as he was at times, he had this certain smugness to his portrayal and made Vegeta sound like he loved the sound of his own voice, because he was such hot shit. The way he emphasized certain words made him sound supremely confident, like he was saying, "I wonder what I'll say next, I bet it'll be awesome."

Sabat's Vegeta is probably the most salvagable of his roles, at least. My problem is that he doesn't sound "angry" per se, more like "very irritated and annoyed", and it comes off as a character type rather than the character itself. He's gotten a little better, though.

His Piccolo does the same thing, sounding like a character type instead of the character himself. There's no color to the voice, no nuances of Piccolo's own pride, which Scott McNeil at least could bring to it. He just sounds like a throaty demon. It sounds like he just went, "Yeah, that's the voice that would come out of that body." and left it at that. It was fine, perhaps, for Piccolo Daimao in Dragon Ball, but for his son, a little more attitude would have been appreciated. I haven't heard any major improvement since I first starting listening to his Piccolo.
Kentai wrote:Son Gokuu is a fascinating character anyway, because he is - at face value, anyway - an idiot savant. The victim of violent head trauma as an infant [...] he's a simple bumpkin with a fair share of brain damage who's natural talents to work out what's wrong compensate for his broad lack of common sense. But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Sabat's Piccolo Daimao voices is very different from his regular Piccolo voice. I was actually pretty thrown off by Sabat continuing to use the Daimao voice for Piccolo Jr. in the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament.

Vegeta already sounds arrogent and full of himself in both Z dubs.

I agree. Kaioh is a wise deity, making him sound like he is a fifteen year old with braces just sounds wrong.

I guess it would be accurate, but it would just sound bad and Schemmel has already been cast as Goku.

Yeah, I never got why such a (supposedly) seasoned master of martial arts sounded like some kid that would get the shit kicked out of him back in middle school.

I think FUNimation thought that just because he tells jokes they should make him sound like a dumbass.

There's also the fact that he looks like a fat bastard. I remember reading the first line of Viz Manga volumes (the pre-Shonen Jump ones) circa 2001 and thinking, "This guy must have a funny voice in the cartoon"

I don't see any reason why Schemmel can't protray Gokuh as a hick.

Sabat already mentioned that there are certain things that would be awkward to the already existing DBZ (DUB) audience that he wouldn't change. And I can't imagine Sean Schemmel's voice as Goku with a hick accent without him sounding like a complete idiot.

He never said exactly what he wasn't changing. He could've meant things like Linda Young as Freeza. But I still think it's possible even if it's improbable.

That shouldn't be an excuse to change. If people complained than they would look stupid for complaining about faithfulness.

Goku doesn't need a hick accent, he just needs to use simple words, and lots of abbreviations like gonna and wanna. A hick accent would make it impossible to take him seriously.

I think Schemmel already uses "gonna" and "wanna" when playing Goku and apart from the "Ally to Justice" speech Schemmel uses mainly simple words.
