Create-A-Character In DB Video Games
Now, for a long time, there has been debate on the topic of whether or not a "Create-A-Character" option would be good in a Dragon Ball game. So, I thought it would be appropiate to have a thread for it to voice people's opinions.
I want to hear why some people are in favour of it and why some aren't. I've heard arguments for "Create-A-Character" being that it would be a fresh and interesting addition to Dragon Ball games, and I've heard some against being that it would not be executed well and a unique idea would end up being a total shambles (as well as a hell to play against online).
Plus, do you think there will be a "Create-A-Charater" in a future Dragon Ball games?

Re: Create-A-Character In DB Video Games
It'd be a pointless addition to the series. The Dragon Ball cast is already vast and varied. We all have favorites characters of of our own to play with. The only purpose a create-a-character would serve is to fulfill fanfictions where you're fighting with the DB cast. It would also take up a lot of development time to make a good character creator, development time which could be used advancing the game-play of the game.
The only game a character creator would be relevant is Dragon Ball Online, as it takes place years after the story, with a new generation of fighters, which everybody must create a new character. It's vital to the story.
But a fighting game with the cast already present? It's absolutely pointless.

It would be pointless because then it would no longer be a DB game.
It would turn into some AF fanfic game.
Why play a DB game if you aren't using DB characters?

Re: Create-A-Character In DB Video Games
A Create-a-Character mode can be used for making other DB characters, though. It's not like every character makes it into every game. I'd love to be able to make obscure characters like Murasaki, or Cyborg #15, or adult Goten. I know people are always clamoring for GT Vegeta, and they could easily make their own if there was a Create-A-Character mode.Rory wrote:My thoughts exactly.LeprikanGT wrote:Why play a DB game if you aren't using DB characters?
It works pretty well in wrestling games, but then everyone in wrestling is a human, for the most part. The problem with Dragon Ball is that they'd need to put a lot of work and a lot of options into it just to make some other in-series characters. I mean, adult Goten and GT Vegeta would be pretty easy, but what if someone wanted to make Giran or Rejick or something? Or someone like Black, who only fights in mecha? Just to properly make someone like Oolong (a relatively prominent character), they'd have to include pig ears and a pig nose just for him alone (though I guess you could get creative and make something dumb like "Piggolo").
It would require so much work to be able to do anything but make a purple Gokuu, and I find it hard to imagine anyone putting that much effort into a Dragon Ball fighting game. It wouldn't really be worth it if they didn't go all out and cover enough of the possibilities.

But how are they going to get you to buy Raging Blast 8, where they added Murasaki, #15, and adult Goten when you already have those characters because you made them with the character creator?TripleRach wrote:A Create-a-Character mode can be used for making other DB characters, though. Re: Create-A-Character In DB Video Games
I can see why a create-a-character feature would be fun but I can see why it would hurt things as well.
On one hand having your own characters would be fun, and if they were smart about it developers could make it so your character has relevance to the story mode(much like DBO). If handled properly it would be a nice bonus for fans of the franchise(like the create a character mode in Soul Calibur).
However, LeprikanGT had a valid point. Once you throw in create a character, the Dragonball part of the game starts to diminish. However, that's only if you chose to play online which in the end you don't have to. You could stay offline or you could simply chose not to fight every "Super Saiyan Gotenku" you see.
Really, I know people are against it but to me it would be a nice inclusion to the series. Really I just want to make a character that parallels my personality(and charming good looks) just so I can fight Vegeta and Goku.

Meh. I'm happy with the massive character roster in Budokai Tenkaichi 3.
If Bandai Namco is going to add a Create-A-Character feature to their upcoming fighter or "Dragon Ball Simulator" they should keep the character roster small.

Look at Soul Calibur. They have new characters with each game and yet has one of the most diverse character creations systems. Just look on youtube. People are using it to make their favorite anime characters. Though SC4 CC was a toned down Version of SC3's CC I heard though many characters have been made through it despite that.

SC3 had a lot of weapon choices that the standard fighters didn't have(there was a ninja class and some other random class that let you use a tambourine) while in SC4 you had to use one of the main character's weapon sets. The thing that bugged me the most about SC4 was that I couldn't make my own Jedi.
However SC4's character creator is pretty cool and as far as Dragonball characters go, I've made: Adult Gohan(no Goku hair lol), Piccolo and Trunks. If Bandi used the same system or even better, decided to use Innagadadavida's idea(he made a very cool video on the topic before Raging Blast was out), I would be very happy.

....
Pointless?
Pointless?
POINTLESS!?
A CaC is the feature that is most needed in the next DBZ game for quite a few reasons.
Why play Dragonball On-line?
Over and over again.
In every game.
Since the dawn of time.
When they actually make it into the game, that is.
A well made CaC would be the best thing to happen to a DBZ fighting game in a long time. As Rachel pointed out it could be used to create existing characters, or variants of existing characters, not included in the game. Game doesn't include a Tiencha? Make him yourself. No more SSJ3 Vegeta? Well, you can make him yourself. Adult Gotenks? Use the CaC. 5th Form Freeza? 1st-3rd Form Cooler? Giant sized Piccolo? Cellin, Prillin, Super Saiya-jin Pan, Super Saiy-jin Bardock, Bra, Popo, Android 14, Android 15, King Choppa, Mutaito? CaC!
A CaC would add tons of replay value. A CaC could make for interesting use in original stories so we don't have to play the same. Damn. Thing. Again. And for those of us with some creativity in us, it would fucking awesome to actually be able to put original characters into the game, to see them in 3D form, to get to play fights you've written out in your fanfictions, etc, etc. I have a huge pool of original characters and fights that I love in my stories and no way to play them.
I've played as everyone from Dragonball. I've played all the stories from Dragonball. I've done a thousand what-if stories for Dragonball in the games. The same old same old just does not cut it anymore.
I will admit that if the CaC isn't given plenty of thought and effort it could easily be a problem. Being able to just whip out an SSJ6 character simply wont cut it. The new character would have to start at a base level, with basic stats and so forth, and be built up and trained to become better. Reaching a certain level would allow the addition of new moves or transformations and so on.

Yeah, you're bored with the characters as they stand ('cause let's face it, the characters are hardly known for their depth), but if the developers work harder on the actual gameplay aspect, and not some CaC, it'll be fun again.

Re: Create-A-Character In DB Video Games
I've been bored of playing as Goku since Budokai 2. The changes for B3 or the many variations of him found in the BT games do nothing to change this. Piccolo was fun in Budokai 1, and occasionally it's nice to watch his rush attack in BT3, but otherwise he's dull. Freeza and Bardock were good in B3 but were quickly played out, and no improvements made in the BT games. Really, the only characters in BT3 that interested me were the ones that were actually new. Like Pilaf, Seripa, and Appule. But they're worn out now.Rory wrote:Until the next game comes out, adds more moves, techniques, gameplay additions etc.Xyex wrote:everything that I can do with the characters I like. And more combat depth wont change any of that, either. SDBZ has proven that. Chi-Chi's got the highest BP of any of my characters in that game (2.8 million to Android 18's 540,000) because she was the only new character in the game. The rest I'd played already in previous games and the new mechanics did nothing to remove the 'same old same old' feeling. Sure, it's nice to be able to whip out a couple of DB characters and have an interesting match with them (DB Kid Goku Vs. Omega Shenron, King Piccolo Vs. Dabura, etc) but even that loses it's appeal after a while.
There's really nothing gameplay wise that can be done now to improve things, unless it's a change of medium. BT1 made them slightly interesting again just for the change of style, but it was a short lived thing because it was still playing as Goku in a fighting game against Raditz and Vegeta and Cell just like I'd always done.
Give me a PS3 version of Legend of the Super Saiya-jin and I might enjoy playing as Goku and Piccolo as much as I used to, because it'll be a new experience. Give me an original story with original enemies and I might enjoy playing as Goku and Piccolo as much as I used to, because it'll be a new situation. Give me a CaC so I can give Bardock or Pan SSJ if I want, or create an adult Gotenks, or a 5th form Freeza, and I might find something new to enjoy with them that I haven't already experienced a dozen times.
Or better yet, give me a CaC so I can create my own characters and I will enjoy playing as them along side and against the DB cast, and so that I can enjoy pitting the existing DB cast against my original characters.

Some cool guy on YouTube created a video about a character creator in the Sparking series.
