Exactly. It's pretty much a rebranded Dragon Ball Z.Taku128 wrote:How is it not DBZ? It tells the story that DBZ told using the same footage, sound effects, and mostly the same actors. Just because Toei decided to drop the Z doesn't change the fact that it's a re-edited version of Z.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
That'd be like George Lucas marketing the digitally altered versions of the original star wars trilogy as different movies.
As much as we know Han shot first, it's still the original Star Wars trilogy.
Saying Dragon Ball Kai is not Dragon Ball Z is kinda silly at this point.

As much as Kai is a re-edited Z, I can understand the not-Z argument as well. If we are to suppose that Kai is supposed to be adhering closer to the manga, then it really isn't Z, as there is no Z manga. Therefore, it's an animated adaptation of the last two-third of the Dragon Ball.

It can't be Dragon Ball Z; there are people who have totally different reactions to both.

It's technically not DBZ but you can't really get mad at somebody for saying/thinking it is DBZ. If the average person saw it on television they would probably think it was DBZ anyways.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

You can't sit me down and have me watch the first 16 episodes of Kai and the first 30-something episodes of Z and go, "See? It's the exact same thing!" Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
I don't think anyone is saying that they are the *exact* same thing... But they are saying that it is simply a re cut of Dragon Ball Z, and is essentially a different version of the same show, but with filler removed and a different soundtrack.Kendamu wrote:You can't sit me down and have me watch the first 16 episodes of Kai and the first 30-something episodes of Z and go, "See? Saying Kai is not Dragon Ball Z would be like saying that Street Fighter II' Champion Edition is not Street Fighter II, when it is simply a modified version of SFII; it has differences, but it isn't a completely new game, just like Kai has differences from Z, but isn't entirely new and different.

Same characters
Same story
I think that's enough to say it is a different VERSION of Dragon Ball Z.

Yeah and FUNimation calling it Dragon Ball Z Kai isn't helping.Chrono Trigger wrote:It's technically not DBZ but you can't really get mad at somebody for saying/thinking it is DBZ. If the average person saw it on television they would probably think it was DBZ anyways.

Toei should have called it DBZ Kai right from the start. Its a much more fitting name.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote: Yeah and FUNimation calling it Dragon Ball Z Kai isn't helping.

You have that backwards. It's because they're the same that people are comparing them. If they weren't the same then there'd be no basis for comparison.Kendamu wrote:If Kai and Z are the same, then nobody would be comparing them.
Agreed. FUNi actually showed more intelligence than Toei on this. Yes, it's supposed to be more faithful to the manga, but... uh... the Dragonball manga started with Goku and Bulma meeting, not with Raditz arriving (or Bardock, for that matter). Beyond this, the division exists in the anime and ignoring it is just stupid and confusing to those who don't pay attention to every little detail. "Dragonball Kai" sounds like either a remake/refreshing of DB (starting from, you know, page/episode 1) or a brand new series (like GT) and not a remake/refreshing of DBZ. Where as DBZ Kai states, quite clearly, what to expect from the series.rereboy wrote:Toei should have called it DBZ Kai right from the start. No. If they're the same, then there'd be no sense in comparing them. Give me a copy of FUNi DBox Z Vol. 1 and FUNi Orange Brick #1 and ask me to compare. That's the same thing. The presentation is very different, but it's the same footage shown at the same length in the same order with (mostly) the same voices, sound effects, and music.Xyex wrote:You have that backwards. However, as I said before, if you expect me to believe Kai and Z are the same thing, you might as well believe that Z and TFS DBZ Abridged are the same thing, too. I mean, they use edited Z footage and basically follow the same story, right?
I don't get why it's so hard for people to understand that a condensed version of an old TV show is not the same as said old TV show. If it were, I'd just buy the old TV show and not worry about the other version 'cause it's the same thing as what I'm already getting.
Hence why I'm not buying the Oragne Bricks and the DBox. They're the same thing but one is in a much higher quality. No need to buy them both.

So if you were to watch an extended cut of a movie, and THEN watch the theatrical cut down release, you would say they're 2 different movies?Kendamu wrote:No. If they're the same, then there'd be no sense in comparing them. Yeah, I would. The original theatrical cut is the movie. The special awesome director's extended magical cut is some vanity project based on the real movie. Because, you know, I'm being objective and non-biased in my opinions about recutting films. ^_^

Why is this even a discussion?
Look. We're all educated mothafuckas. We know that Kai is not a "new" series. It is, however, a new take ON the series. A revisioning. A remastering. A fuckin' rental version for people short on time and patience. That alone qualifies it as a different show. Nevermind what they cut and where they cut it-- the sheer amount of shit that's being cut in the first place makes Kai the Weight Watcher's version of DBZ. It's vitamins, minerals and nutrients. It's 99% fat-free. And then they top it off with an entirely new recording? How is this the same show? It's not the same show. DBZ is what you eat when you're a kid and don't give a fuck. You've got the time and you've got the metabolism. Kai is what you eat twenty years later when the mirror tells you that y'need to drop some pounds. It don't taste the same, but it do taste. You're losin' weight, and you feel great.
