Mr. Satan's name

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

From wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucifer
Lucifer is a Latin word (from the words lucem ferre), literally meaning "light-bearer", which in that language is used as a name for the dawn appearance of the planet Venus, heralding daylight. Use of the word in this sense is uncommon in English, in which "Day Star" or "Morning Star" are more common expressions.

In English, "Lucifer" generally refers to Satan, although the name is not applied to him in the New Testament. The use of the name "Lucifer" in reference to a fallen angel stems from an interpretation of Isaiah 14:3-20, a passage that speaks of a particular Babylonian King, to whom it gives the title of "Day Star", "Morning Star" (in Latin, lucifer),[2] as fallen or destined to fall from the heavens or sky.[3] In 2 Peter 1:19 and elsewhere, the same Latin word lucifer is used to refer to the Morning Star, with no relation to the devil. However, in post-New Testament times the Latin word Lucifer has often been used as a name for the devil, primarily in fictional works.
Although its understandable that soccer moms would freak out with a hero named Satan, it is not understandable that they freak out with Lucifer since the name doesn`t have to mean Satan or be a reference to Satan (although it can be).

In Dragon Ball, it would preserve the reference without actually meaning Satan.

Let me ask you something: When someone says Lucifer do people usually think of the Devil or the Morning Star?

Does that make them right? They are the ones who are "ignorant" about the name, after all.

But you are probably right. They would be stupid enough to complain about that name.

People complain about anything. If you cave in at every turn you're only encouraging them.

Next you'll tell me I can't name my kid Damien because of The Omen.

I don't think it's their fault for 'Lucifer' meaning 'Satan' for the past four hundred years. Yeah the word originally carried no such connotations, but that was two thousand years ago in a dead language that's not even related to English.

Plus, the entire reason you chose it as a rename for Hercule is because it means 'Satan'.

There's... already a character named Lucifer, isn't there?
*struggles not to go into "Lucifer has nothing to do with Satan" mode* :twitch:

No, I chose Lucifer because its an actual name that can be related to Satan. If I wanted a synonym I would go with something like Devil.

Yes, but he is called simply Lucifer, not Mr. Lucifer.

(But of course that could cause problems  )

Toriyama revealed that in 2009 though. FUNimation decided to name the character Hercule in 2000, nine years before Toriyama revealed Mr. Satan's actual name. The information wasn't around back then, so they couldn't name him Mark. Well, they could've, but it would've been entirely coincidental.
But hilariously awesome once the SEG came out. I would have loved that. You'd have had people ranting and raving for nine years that "Mark" is wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, and stupid x10. And then the SEG would have been released and it would have been all kinds of hilarious. XD
Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:FUNimation could have used Mr. Tasan or Mr. Nastan which are anagrams like Videl.
I think "Mr. Natas" would have been bettern than "Tasan" or "Nastan"
the_abberration wrote:I believe PD was saying, they could have at least tried to use some variation of the word Satan, as opposed to naming him (the H-word). Like Videl = Devil.

Personally, I feel they should have went with Dante. It would have been less overt compared to Satan, while at the same time keeping the same meaning.
Yeah, going with some other 'devily' name would have saved them a lot of complaints from fans of the original, I think. Mr. Beelze would have worked. It would have been interesting if they'd called him Mr. Akuma.

Though I think calling him Daemon would have been the best option, myself.

And hey, they could have always called him Mr. Luci. >.>

Then again, I guess that's what they sorta kinda did. :(
They named him after a not-so-menacing figure from the Agatha Christie canon.
 So he's the world Champion AND a detective on the side?

Though. isn't Hercule just the French way of writing Hercules?
