What are some weird assumptions that you've made?
Oh man, one that I'd really like to share was something that I can blame on seeing Z before the original DB. I remember I was watching and AMV back in 2001, and it had the scene from the Bardock special where Kid Vegeta was beating the crap out of the Saibamen. Since I never saw Dragon Ball or the Bardock Special at that point, I actually thought that the scene was from Dragon Ball, and that they were already building towards the beginning of DBZ at the end of Dragon Ball

Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I thought that Super Saiyan Goku was a completely different character from Goku, as I only saw a few seconds of "Next time, on Dragon Ball Z!".
I was discussing with my friend how he'd come in and help Goku out, 'cause "he looks pretty tough!"

Well, when I was young I remember two things
1) I remember seeing android 15 and 16 and thinking they were apart of some sort of Dragonball special that was shown on tv but I kept missing it or something, I always used to think 16 had some big role in the series
.
2) I remember seeing a trailer for the Bojack movie and thinking it was some rare movie or something, wow I was dumb

Re: What are some weird assumptions that you've made?
Hmm, sounds funteresting...
- I tried for a very long while to believe that Goku didn't blow a hole through Piccolo daimao who then spat out an egg and reincarnated himself, and that Daimao and Junior were one in the same. Dunno why.
- I just kinda assumed Vegeta would disappear after Namek, what with not having a reason to stick around.
- Garlic Jr vaguely resembled a Namekian.

- Just because Freeza survived the spirit bomb didn't mean anything interesting would happen in the following episode.

- Having managed to miss the first half of the saiyan saga before getting to Freeza, I kinda assumed that Goku and Bulma and most everyone just kinda hung out at the same place all the time, as evidenced by one of my first attempts at fanfiction (I think it was supposed to be the "prequel" to my first?) opening with Goku chillin' in the back yard and Bulma running out to tell him about an ass he had to go kick.
- Before I knew most of the characters by name, I saw part of the Goku Nappa fight and heard the narrator talk about Vegeta and wound up thinking Nappa was Vegeta for... a few minutes, maybe a day or few, I dunno.
- Combine those closeups of people with scouters with my bad vision, and I thought Zarban was in some kind of small vehicle or outpost or something watching Vegeta kill someone (don't remember if it was Dodoria or Cui...). I suppose the being-around-Freeza's-ship thing makes that kinda right, but... not quite what I was imagining.

I thought there was an assload of timetravel involved because I saw everything out of order. I saw GT one day and Z some other day and was like "What the fuck? How are Trunks and Goten constantly changing age?"

Re: What are some weird assumptions that you've made?
During the first time I watched the early Namek episodes on Toonami, I thought:
That Yamcha was Goku's father.
That Freeza was female.
And that GT would feature the entire main DB cast traveling through space in a ship the size of Freeza's spaceship.

Re: What are some weird assumptions that you've made?
At the end of DBZ, the credits would say something like "adapted from Akira Toriyama's Dragonball". That made me believe for many years that Dragonball was an old tale like a King Arthur or Hercules, passed down for generations. I guess it was the fact that a name like Akira Toriyama was so foreign to me that my only assumption was that it had to be a guy from a very long time ago.
Although I find it more amazing now that we are living during the birth of this new tale which will go down in history beside the greats. *fingers crossed*

Re: What are some weird assumptions that you've made?
Back when the Ocean dub seasons were airing in syndication, and I was just starting to watch it (during the Namek episodes), I made these assumptions:
- Goku and Yamcha are brothers
- Freeza is a woman
- Kuririn is a bald child (well, he was at some point!)
- "Dragon Ball Z" is some weird EXTREME way of saying "Dragon Balls" with the "Z" in place of an "s" for pluralization. I thought, "Jeez, that's lame."
But for some reason, I always knew DBZ was Japanese. I can't even recall why. I just saw it and went, "Oh, this is one of those Japanese cartoons." I wasn't even that experienced in anime at the time.

I thought "Kakarrot" was Goku's last name, as Vegeta always referred to him as such, and I assumed it was because he wanted to distance himself from Goku out of hate or whatever.

Re: What are some weird assumptions that you've made?
My introduction to DBZ (and DB in general) was actually through getting one of those Burger King toys. (Which I got three or so years before I even saw DBZ, since I didn't have cable at the time.) I saw that he was labeled as "Vegeta" and assumed that it was short for "Vegetable," which was clearly his real name.
So when we moved and got cable, and I happened across DBZ for the first time, I yelled out to my brother, "HEY! Vegetable is on TV!!"
And so we started watching DBZ. And eventually realized that Vegeta was just Vegeta, not Vegetable.

Okay this tops everything. I was over at my friends house and he had a copy of the Japanese Final Bout (burned I think). He picked Kid Buu and was playing through the story mode until he got to "Son Goku". I thought Son Goku meant Goku's son or Goten but aged. That was but one of my fond memories and confusion playing Final Bout.

Re: What are some weird assumptions that you've made?
Pretty sure that I've said these before but...
I thought Tenshinhan was a powered up Kuririn and Vegeta was a powered up Goku. Too much Pokemon and Digimon I think convinced me everyone in every anime had to "evolve" into a higher form to fight. Then they did when they brought in Super Saiyan and so on.
I figured Trunks would be a more ronin-style character. Like Auron in Final Fantasy X or something, rather than the father-figure seeking soft-spoken guy he was.
I thought Yamucha was competent. I also wasn't 100% sure if Saiyan arc Yamucha and Artificial Human arc Yamucha were the same person. I thought maybe someone mislabled a picture of a new character.
I read a little about Coola and assumed someone had typoed Kiwi (Cui in the dub). This was when people were still running around with their Bejita's and their Mirai no Torankusu's.
I thought there were several different Bulma sisters, what with all the hairstyles and all. Kind of like Nurse Joy/Officer Jenny in Pokemon.
I assumed Goku was never really involved in the story and basically just came in once a 'season' to bail everybody out of trouble. Wait a second.
Reading spoilers for the Cell arc and beyond, I assumed Goku and Gohan would stay in their relaxed Super Saiyan forms for the rest of the series.
I dismissed Piccolo Daimao as a rumour because Planet Namek didn't have a profile on him. If they didn't have it, it didn't count, damn it.
I figured we hadn't seen the last of Raditz, even when Vegeta and Nappapaba decided not to revive him. lulz Actually he is in episode 100, at least. Yay.

After the episode where Trunks was introduced and turned Super Saiyan, I thought he was Gokû in disguise or something. The fact that the portuguese dub gave them both the same voice didn't help.

Re: What are some weird assumptions that you've made?
Back when DBZ ended after Goku arrived on Namek, I always thought picures of Goku and Trunks as Super Saiyans were different characters. Super Saiyan Vegeta made me question that thought though.
There was a clip I saw where SSJ4 Goku fires a Kamehameha at Baby-Vegeta. The light from the Kamehameha reflects back onto Goku. I thought Goku was in his base and he went SSJ when he fired the blast since the light made it look like his hair changed.
I always thought Android 16 and Gohan were best friends which is why his death would be the trigger to push Gohan into SSJ2.

Re: What are some weird assumptions that you've made?
This is a great thread, I wish I could remember all the foolish theories and connections I must have made back in my Toonami/Pojo.com days. It wasn't until around 2002 that I watched DBZ in it's entirety, but by the time the Garlic Jr. saga was airing, I was at least vaguely familiar with the plot, the characters, the SSJ levels, etc., because of various fan sites (remember Da Black Goku?). But damn, nothing comes to mind at the moment...
It's been done countless times before, but...

From playing Super Butoden 2 long before having any experience with the Cell arc or being able to see anything but weird squiggles in Japanese text, but having picked up some names here and there, I somehow got into my head that this was a battle between King Chappa and Mr. Satan.

Hey, at least I got one name right. Satan kind of looks like Chappa, but I have absolutely no idea how I made the connection that this green, super-strong guy was this "Mr. Satan" I obviously knew nothing of other than the name. But hey, with a name like that, he obviously has to be a main villain, right?
